I feel like reading the books is going to ruin the games for me. Only ever got through the first game half way, and am currently at the mage banquet in time of Contempt. I feel like the book is giving me new perspective that is making it extremely easy to guess motives and explain small detail I know happen in the games spoiling them.
My main issue that the author treats Yennifer as the correct relationship choice and builds the world around her to prove it, while she remains a bad one dimensional character. This is a problem to me as it's become very clear that the games is set up in a way where there intentionally is no flawless pick between Triss and Yennifer.
I can't find it in myself to forgive Yennifer for cheating with the wizard in the 2nd short story ( Note Geralt never sleeps with other women when he is actually in active relations with Yennifer.) Triss is an actually well rounded character, but the world seems to set her up as being worse by circumstances to make others look better. Yennifer is dominatrix fetish, while Triss is warm hearted life long partner dispite her difficulties. Triss never act in an emotionally abusive manner and treats Geralt like a dog. Even though find the domineering Yennifer sexy, actions like that can not be excused on principal after she crossed the moral Rubicon, which the book tries to brush off.
In other words please help find a good argument for me why I should reconsider Yennifer, and over look morally bankrupt selfishness and petty jealously for being barren.
( Please avoid major spoiler all if possible, thank you.)
( Also Essi Daven Little Eye is the only true answer for who the best girl is but the writer is a hack and killed her off.)

The games are based on the books, not adaptations of the games, and from what I hear - the games barely even resemble the books despite being a direct sequel of sorts. Chronologically they are, and due to licensing, they are - but from I hear the author is horribly buttblasted over the fact that the games are massively more popular and successful than the books ever were. So he doesn't consider them canon, even though his publishers do.

After reading a shitload of novels about 15 years ago, I can very easily predict the plot, events, and sometimes even the dialogue in modern fiction. On the plus side, I no longer watch TV, and could write a better character than most writers, without even trying. Actually, that's terrible. There is another fantasy book with a protagonist that has white hair and uses a (one) sword.
That's pretty much where the similarities end. Because that Elric guy is the king of some overpowered mage nation that goes around doing fantasy stuff rather than a mutated monster hunter that is only tolerated by society because they need him.
It's only a superficial thing because of the hairstyle and the fact that swords are a thing. Not sure if any author can really lay claim on those things, but it feels nice to be a harsh critic of something popular.

The Witcher short stories are eh and the mainline books are downright trash - games really don't do a better job with the writing as seen here >>15220165 when to disincentivize the player from going with the best option they had to invent a downside from whole cloth by having the guy off his co-conspirators in a singularly out-of-character move (him quoting Macbeth does NOT make it better). It's a cheap hackjob very reminiscent of what New Vegas did with House and the Brotherhood of Steel. Anyhow, Witcher is at it's best when sticking to short stories.
What's worse is a lot of Euros swear by the books as if they were the highest literary standard, shoving it down everybody's throat whenever the topic of what the fuck I am reading pops up. Had the great pleasure of introducing said people to the Book of the Fallen and watch them fucking eat their words in the span of a fucking week.

I personally take issue with how the story seems to got out of it's way to push Grey morality and Grim Derp because subverting fantasy is popular. Real life is mostly Grey and subjective , but sometime there are also clear cut right and wrongs ,and not everyone has to be overtly flawed or have a bad ending.

Gameplay-wise, Dragon's Dogma is the best Witcher game. You go around hunting monsters with distinct and believable behavioral patterns and are heavily encouraged to learn their weaknesses, and the interesting behaviors of the monsters result in a lot of varied fights despite the fact that you're often fighting the same enemy over and over again (Chimeras are the best example of this).
The issues that the games have come from that they are subsequently too faithful and not faithful enough to the source material. Geralt in the games is a lot less interesting than his book counterpart due to having most of his character flaws minimized or removed (autism about things like facial hair, inhuman appearance), yet the games are very faithful about things which aren't particularly important like the specific configuration of spells and weaponry that Witchers used. Had they been less faithful they could have added a lot more variety to the gameplay, and it would have probably been wise to not make Geralt the protagonist due to him already having completed his character arc in the books. That said, I don't think the books were anything special to begin with. The concept of Witchers is neat and makes for a cool setup, but in general the characters are pretty bland and the little isolated fairytale stories that comprise most of the books don't have much relation to each other. This format would actually better suit a videogame or a TV show, which would make it the most redeeming aspect of the games. Or it would be had the games focused more on this format instead of trying to copy Game of Thrones starting with Witcher 2.

The most insulting and infuriating part is that the Author set up the situation where she is being Raped by a guy who is stopped by a girl who then rapes her instead. And this shit is played off as being less sever because it's a woman and lesbian. Completely out of character for Ciri not to take action against the even double standard of injustice.
Fuck while it is expected and welcome in hentai by me. There Author just keeps pushing her dam magical realm into every part of the book. And it's utterly infuriating as this goes to show the hypocrisy SJWs and Feminists take advantage of in popular culture.

2. Geralt has combat and exploration modes and jump is only available in the later so if you step into a pothole while fighting, you're basically fucked
The game shines in the exploration as there's tons of shit to do and find. Most side quests will appear if you stick to the main roads and almost every dead end fork will lead to something but loot and and caves to explore are in the forests and mountains. You have main quests, side quests, contracts, treasure hunts, unlogged side quests that can be done in a minute, ? points across the map that can be monster dens, abandoned areas, monster nests, bandit camps, people in distress, guarded treasures etc. Gear crafting can be annoying because you'll find several versions of the same shit but most of it sucks anyway and you'll likely stick to witcher sets or the special ones that were added as DLC plus the ones in the extra campaigns. The game suffers for not letting the player use NPC costumes besides a Cossack robe similar to Olgierd's which is a shame because the game has some top notch fashions.
The game boasts its choice system and while it's pretty well done in some instance like with the Bloody Baron, it feels like it's giving you a choice between fillet mignon and dog vomit in others, case in point being Skellige's ruler side plot. In this last run I chose Hjalmar and after a brief quest that led to no conclusions, kept being reminded by everyone that Hjalmar's a stupid asshole and Cerys should have been the vikang. Another would be the romantic choice because the story is obviously written for Geralt to stay with Yen; I boned Triss and nothing really came of it. Went for the threesome to ditch them both.
Also I personally found Gwent to be pretty entertaining. Its problem is that you'll spend so much time with the Northern Realms deck, you probably won't switch by the time you assembled others. Also sucks the decks don't carry to NG+.
Give it a try and if it clicks with ya and you're the thorough type, you have a game that will keep you busy for whole lot of hours. And if you do like it, playing the DLCs is mandatory; if I'm not mistaken you can play each of them separately.

Almost forgot - play it with the Polish voice work for the authentic experience.
Side note, a thing I love about W3 is the shit weather. It was something Dragon's Dogma did not have and this more than makes up for it. It will also make Toussaint all the more sweeter.

It's actually very weird the Author seems to retcon Geralt into being shit at magic after the first book. In the Last Wish they call him a Sorcerer, and he has a large variety of non combat Signs.
Further more what does make sense is in Time of Contempt it is acknowledge is magically very powerful because he is the son of a Enchantress. But doesn't want to learn magic cause he hates the Lodge organization. The real question is why doesn't he learn it by himself from Yennefer and Triss and use it as a tool independently.

IIRC Geralt can't learn higher magic but can only do simple magic like Witcher signs, which are considered by sorcerers and the like as basically baby toys.
And other signs are included in the games, but not as ones you can cast in your spell selection. Heliotrope, which is a sign in the books for example, is a special skill you learn in your skill tree.

While this is part of the gameplay, it is made very clear is can become a Sorcerer Wizard if he wants to. It is in fact heavily implied he could become the strongest living Sorcerer ( though he would stilly be only Second to Ciri because Plot Power Reasons.)

Maybe it isn't worth the time. Witcher signs are shit-tier in power but they're quick enough to cast in combat.

You misunderstand, the devs started forcing all new books in a bad direction to accomodate the shitty plot of their newer games, while also shitting up what was good from the older books with said shitty plot. Those older Halo books are high-tier stuff, much better than the games IMO, and their loss is far more saddening than what happened to the games.

So, in answer to your question - yeah, you will. In for a wild fucking ride.

It was heavily implied from the first game that forerunners were humans, or a close relative. When the robots call you "reclaimer" it's pretty damn obvious. Then in books you had the Covenant artifact scanners freaking out with human worlds registering everything as forerunner artifacts.I think one monitor outright states "You are forerunner" somewhere as well. Then 343 turned them into voldemort-people just because.

I really liked the video games because they are the closet thing to an open world Warhammer Fantasy battle game aesthetic. But reading the books just has me in absolute shock as things that are utterly immoral are occur and characters don't react to it at all, and go about as if it's normal. Even Game of Thrones didn't have this problem when the bad guys got away with evil deeds. This just feels like finding the author has utterly incompatible values that make his view of the world seem alien.

Its like when you see a black guy thats 5th generation american with an Africa medallion or when that Asian guy from LA said a white girl can't wear a CHINESE dress to a prom because thats his culture even though he is AMERICAN and not Chinese. The actual Chinese all told him to fuck right off.
