It was the last good pre-matchmaking FPS. The core of the experience was wandering onto someone's server and playing with the same people for a few hours, maybe finding a server you really liked and becoming part of a little community. Most people with a fondness for TF2 remember making friends and being parts of communities like this in the days when fun was the goal, when you played with and against real people rather than faceless nobodies that you'll never see again after 20 minutes, when every new game you tried was like entering a new world of different people rather than a soulless parade of NPCs to fight alone or with friends you already had.
Although the competitive scene is pretty much irrelevant, TF2 probably has the highest skill ceiling of any FPS still actively played. Team Fortress began life as a Quake mod, and it shows in how fluid the game controls and how demanding combat can be. Few people make the connection but it really feels and controls more like a class-based arena shooter than not. In most other games today (hero shooters excepted), engagement times are mere seconds and most fights boil down to who fired first or who had the tactical advantage. In TF2 it simply takes longer to kill anyone, providing ample time for interesting fights and options. I can't think of any game today where you are expected to be capable of blasting a guy into the air with a rocket or pill, then a second later shooting him midair with another projectile, all while he has full air control. Or a game where you are expected to be capable of dealing with making rapid 180 degree turns as a scout dances around your head. Or a game that, rather than patching it as an exploit, allows and rewards you for being talented enough at rocket jumping to travel across a large map in seconds. And yet the core gameplay is simple, compelling, and still incredibly fun for beginners; it is not gated and exclusive, rather it invites you to grow as a player in a natural way free (at the time) from the stress and autism of a matchmaking leaderboard.
TF2 had soul. It had a compelling and coherent art style based on the works of artists like Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker. It had a cast of highly memorable characters with unique, highly distinguishable designs that still fit together, from which countless works of creativity were made by fans in an age before viral marketing was understood by companies as a force to be exploited. The art was married to the gameplay, not orthogonal to it; the architectural themes of each team made you feel which side of the map you were on, and the unique character designs made it easy to distinguish each class from the rest with nothing but a silhouette to go by. And it had a refreshing sense of humor that combined a silly Disney-like art style with dark, violent cynicism.
TF2 was an incredible game, one that we will probably never see the likes of again. The last and greatest creation of a different era.

I've always felt like TF2V was just some kinda shit people here tried to make after some minor shit happened with TF2C. I liked TF2C a whole lot back when everyone played it back in 2015 or so and I never really understood the hate out of nowhere other than their beta circlejerk being kind of gay. Hell I played with the devs multiple times and liked them; TF2C seems to be closed down while they fix up the full release or something though so TF2V seems like a fair enough option though. I really enjoy TF2.

Degreaser is such a huge problem because it makes otherwise balanced weapons completely broken when used together, and is such a dominant choice that it basically forces Valve to balance the class around the Degreaser and further gimp the Pyro. Honestly I wish it was never added to the game. We'd still have the old axetinguisher if it weren't for this monstrosity. They wouldn't be afraid to buff any flamethrower properties either.
I liked the gameplay of TFC pyro where the afterburn was the real killer. All of the weapons did piss for damage, but that didn't matter as their only purpose was to chip people down into afterburn range. Pyro DM was basically tag them for ~40 damage and then laugh because Omae wa, mou shindeiru. The class really felt different to play and play against. It didn't just feel like you were playing a small heavy with a range of 1m.

Pyro wasn't really even that OP. In high-level play he was still one of the weakest classes and it hurts whenever I see him keep getting nerfed. Degreaser + Axtinguisher was fine.

Hey why is the demo so nerfed? His damage is shit all even with the small boost in fire rate.
Compared with the soldier who has a 90 damage per round rocket and a 0.8 interval between shots the 100 damage (only on hit without bouncing on the ground) and 0.6 interval it seems fine on paper. But in practice the demo is much harder to master.
Back in the old days of fps like doom, you only needed to worry about moving and aiming from X axis with hit scan weapons to hit enemies, outside of using projectile weapons to guess or trap enemies into them, which was difficult. Then with games like Heretic or half-life came along and you could finally use the y axis as well, not only raising the difficulty of hit scan weapons but also projectile.
Now there are already hitscan weapons in tf2, but the soldier has a projectile weapon that needs the use of both X and Y targeting axis to guess where to shoot, yet the Demo man also has a projectile weapon that shoots a projectile that has to be predicted in both X and Z. Unlike the soldier that needs only to guess where on X and Y, the poor Demo needs to Guesstimate on the top of his head the X and Z axis of the projectiles path, which he can't see, while also guessing where to shoot since its a projectile weapon that can be dodged.
How is this balanced?

Doesn't the Demo deal 100 damage per grenade? That's pretty damn fucking nice. Once you master the Demo that 100 damage per shot is yours to keep. Also, like >>15247922 said whereas the Soldier can rocket jump around and shoot people with a shotgun for that extra offensive boost, Demo can set traps and deny entire areas from people with his stickies, and potentially devastate entire damn squads of players with them if they're not careful.
Demo's anything but weak. In high level-play I believe the predictability of classes like Spy and Pyro make them a little rough to play well, but it's been years since I read anything about it.
