Chim is being a lucid dreamer.
The next step is becoming the sleeping god yourself.
Padomay and Sithis were brothers originally that quarreled over some hoe, Padomay killed his brother and achieved chim then sleeping god status in his own universe spawning TES.
Dagoth Ur is a inverse of this just as Numidium can be considered something out of the usual mechanism so can Dagoth Ur.
Also people with Chim can't do everything as they risk waking the sleeping god and ending everything.

Not only is Vivec's form diminished but even if he did that'd just be one timeline.
Think about it: Talos achieved CHIM and he ascended to true godhood. But what has Vivec done with his powers? He got Azura to curse all of the Dunmer, fucked around with some Daedric Princes, and summoned a meteor and said "If you don't worship me I'll drop it on you!" like a desperate ex making an ultimatum. The stolen power isn't being used by one person but split up between three people. Neravar had a fraction of true CHIM but these three fuck-ups split it between eachother. One of them was even so retarded they sent assassins to kill Neravar Reborn and got their attention to kill them.
As for the timeline thing, Vivec references that you can just come back and kill him if you fail. He knows theres something beyond the timelines.

From my point of view (which doesn't mean shit) you can look at this in two ways:
> 1. CHIM doesn't really give you reality-bending powers AND/OR Vivec didn't truly achieve CHIM (being only aware of it at best)
It's important to remember that the Heart of Lorkhan is the main source of power for the Tribunal and Dagoth Ur. Even just tapping into it is enough to make you a god. It also corrupts you with hubris, and seems to doom you to an inevitable tragedy. It is impossible to seperate the legend and myth of Vivec found in the Sermons and other ancient accounts from what actually happened.
The Heart is also a Tower. There's evidence that knowing the form and function of a tower can allow you to use it to greater extent. I've seen theories posted that Tiber Septim used the White Gold tower to retcon Cyrodiil being a jungle, *not* CHIM.
Maybe CHIM is less like lucid dreaming and more like being aware you are part of a greater consciousness or design? You see the wheel, but cannot affect or escape it without becoming the godhead.
>2. Vivec has motivations besides seeing Dagoth Ur fail
If you go with the CHIM = omniscient superpowers angle, then Vivec either knows exactly what will transpire in all possible futures or at least has strong powers of prophecy. So he probably knows that Dagoth Ur will die, the Heart will be destroyed, and that Almalexia will die as well. Perhaps he only did *exactly* what he had to do to ensure the above.
Think about it – the fact that he carries wraithguard on him allows the main quest (and, by extension, the above events) to be carried out even if the PC kills an essential character.
His dialogue also reflects a strong sense of regret for the actions of himself and the entire Tribunal. I feel his greatest motivations lie in helping the people that worship him (quite similar to Talos), and he probably realizes that the Tribunal, Dagoth Ur, and the Heart itself do Vvardenfell no good. Well, by the end of the game, all of the above are done away with.

for gameplay, the two most important ones are the morrowind patch project and the morrowind code patch. the patch project fixes various bugs, and the code patch in particular fixes many things that other mods just don't, such as fixing pickpocketing, having summoned units attack enemies automatically without the need for the player to be attacked before they respond, enabling right-click magic use without need to get out your two hands in preparation (ie casting while still wielding a weapon), and more. it enables you to choose which features in particular you want to enable upon installing it, and it works just fine with cracked exes unlike some folks have claimed in the past, just install it after you install the crack.
aside from those two, i'd recommend getting one that changes the birthsigns/racial attributes, since the default are kinda meh. the one i use is BTB's Game Improvements, but there're others out there also. the BTB mod changes alot of stuff, i personally like it but there are multiple gameplay mods of this type out there so look and find one you like, as i think the default birthsigns and racial abilities are shittily designed. can read more about it in link below.
additionally, one called 'morrowind advanced' changes certain creatures stats, and makes things more difficult in certain areas.
darknut's greater dwemer ruins can be fun, but it's hit-and-miss and while i like certain portions of it, as >>15217741 mentions, it isn't necessarily better. i certainly wouldn't use it on my first mainstory playthru.
also, three mods from bethesda that i use are: area-effect arrows (which, in spite of the title, mainly is useful because it adds several arrow vendors where there weren't any before), adamantium armor mod (which adds a set of medium armor that makes medium armor actually worth getting, rather than being objectively inferior to light and heavy), and the ebq_artifact mod (forget the official title) which adds an adamantium helm which wasn't included with the 'adamantium armor' mod.
two absolutely essential mods are also: quick char, which can be found at the link below and enables you to jump right into the clerk's office and skip the boat-scene, and talrivian's state-based HP mod, which makes your HP based on your current endurance (and adjusts accordingly if you get a debuff from disease or w/e) rather than from what it was at the time that you leveled up.
the 'imperial legion badge' mod is nice if you plan to join the legion, because it enables you to receive a 'badge' item upon joining that qualifies you as a member, rather than having to carry around a chestpiece all the time from them.
graphical ones are easy to find and based on preference, won't go into detail on those here.
you can find a list here of various mods as well as download links (went thru and re-checked, most links are still working):

I really wish Oblivion let you go to a few other Daedra realms. The fact that you only went to Mehrune's Dagon's realm makes it seem like Oblivion is just some stereotypical "hell", but there's so much variation available. We never got to see
>Coldharbor
>`The sky is on fire,' I heard him say as he moved on to the next realm. 'The ground is sludge, but traversable. I see blackened ruins all around me, like a war was fought here in the distant past. The air is freezing. I cast blooms of warmth all around me, but it still feels like daggers of ice stabbing me in all directions.' This was Coldharbour, where Molag Bal was Prince.
>Moonshadow
>'Too much beauty,' Zenas gasped when he went to the next realm. 'I am half blind. I see flowers and waterfalls, majestic trees, a city of silver, but it is all a blur. The colors run like water. It's raining now, and the wind smells like perfume. This surely is Moonshadow, where Azura dwells.'
>Apocrypha
>Morian Zenas described to me an endless library, shelves stretching on in every direction, stacks on top of stacks. Pages floated on a mystical wind that he could not feel. Every book had a black cover with no title. He could see no one, but felt the presence of ghosts moving through the stacks, rifling through books, ever searching. It was Apocrypha. It's less buggy than the original exe, doesn't need a code patch, has more features like cell preloading, and has all the advantages of being an open source program? It's less a question of "why use openMW?" and more a question of "why not use openMW?", which is really only answered if you either really want to use mods that utilize MWSE or you're a graphics whore that needs shaders and distant land.

Didn't he come back a while ago? Also updates have been pretty steady for a project like this. As far as why you'd use it, it's undeniable that it runs far better on modern systems than the vanilla engine
OpenMW
>runs better on modern systems
>no code patch needed
>cells pre-load so you never really see load screens in towns
>mod directory separate from the game's data folder allows for better mod install/uninstall
>has the potential for more ambitious/gamechanging mods
<old mods that rely on MWSE or MGEXE do not and will never work
<arguably bad water shader
<terribly hardware-intensive distant lands due to it being a relatively new feature
<lacks the post-processing effects of MGEXE
Vanilla
>MGEXE
>Code patch has some optional features that you might prefer aren't available in OpenMW
>Some of the cooler, more hacky older mods only work with vanilla
>shadows

if my current morrowind setup works fine, negligible CTDs (mayyybe 6 or so in many hundreds of hours), and has certain gameplay mods that aren't compatible with openmw that i enjoy very much, then i have no justification for using it myself. the argument
>doesn't need a code patch
isn't really relevent when installing the code patch takes all of 2 minutes and then it's done.
if it became compatible with the various gameplay mods that i prefer using, has some of the other fixes that the code patch provides (such as having summoned units automatically attack hostiles rather than sitting still until the player is attacked aswell as right-click casting while wielding a weapon, to name only a couple of many), and if my current setup was buggy, then i'd use it.
but my current setup isn't buggy, so openmw being less buggy isn't really relevent since my setup isn't buggy either. the code patch took only 2 minutes to install, and thus it not needing one isn't relevent. and, while it being opensource is nice, it doesn't itself provide reason to use it when other things are lacking.
preloading cells does seem really nice, but when my current setup is pretty much bug-free and works fine, and again, the gameplay mods which i very much like using don't work on openmw, then i have no reason to use it.

'arguably' better being the keyword, as openmw isn't necessarily better if someone has a morrowind setup that works fine, which would be the case with some patch like patch project or patch for purists, and the code patch.
the main arguments are
>less bugs
>no need to install code patch
>runs better
all three of which are nonissues when someone already has a setup that runs fine, isn't buggy, and has the codepatch installed (installing it is not any more difficult than installing another mod, you just run the install exe, select which features to enable/disable, and done).

Unless he meant "MGEXE" as part of "graphics mods", upgrading to OpenMW would be nearly as easy as using the code patch and come with features the code patch doesn't have. It's nearly impossible to fuck up your install while modding in OpenMW, since you can just delete everything in it's mod folder and still have the vanilla game intact. I didn't know that about TR by the way, though to be fair someone could probably play the game tons of times by the time those later builds of TR are released.

I always assumed that the other Daedric Princes still think he's part of Sheo and he's just chilling in Oblivion playing 64-dimensional chess, and planning his next move so he's not banished again. There's actually a mod for Skyrim called VIGILANT where you eventually fight through coldharbour which was being currently being invaded by Jyggalag
But considering that Jyggalag and Sheo were one in the same before SI, it wasn't much of a reversal rather two sides of the same coin. Malacath on the other hand is a complete transformation after being shat out. Perhaps if he were devoured again or his spirit restored he could become Trinimac once again, implying he actually had any desire to do so. It's not like the Aedra have the power to do so anymore.
Or like >>15221094 said, CHIM.

I think there's a fairly strong influence of early Christianity as well. The Empire occupying Morrowind, the factions within the temple, and the controversy over the identity and legitimacy of the savior, all has echoes of the Roman occupation of Judea.
Those are all plot elements, though. In tone, I think it's fair to say that Morrowind's religious elements are very Hindu, especially everything involving Vivec.
Interestingly, many of the caves and ancestral tombs have Sumerian names.

So I know this thread is mostly dedicated to Morrowind but I figure this thread is as good as any for Lore Discussion. Oblivion was the weaker game but I liked the cult of the Mythic Dawn, mainly because of Commentaries were the ones you HAD to read so they had to put a little work in there.
My main question is that do they have a valid point in saying that Tamriel is part of the plane of Oblivion, and since it's so contested and prone to change it falls into Mehrunes Dagons territory since Lorkhan was killed and can no longer claim it? I don't know if it was intentional or if the writers were fucking up when they made Mankar start mismatching the Daedra and their Realms and the other stuff, while interesting, doesn't matter too much one way or another and the shit about Dagon crafted in Lyg specifically to carry Hope to the world just seems in universe bullshit, but that bit about Nirn being Lorkhans oblivion plane and the Aedra just being shitters who came in after everything was done seems the most plausible bit they had going for them

I don't think the ambiguity about whether or not you're really Nerevarine is supposed to imply that you're some dude who just got lucky. The spirits of the failed incarnations in Azura's cave seem to imply the opposite, in fact.
People seem to either overstate or misunderstand the few moments of ambiguity that the story shows toward the prophecy.
I think the point isn't that the prophecy is a lie, or that you're just lucky, but rather to show that you can only become the Nerevarine through will. Consider the moment when you claim the Moon-and-Star, and even moreso when (or if) you tell Dagoth Ur that you really are the Nerevarine. That moment is the moment that you really do become the Nerevarine. It lets you choose how much you buy into the prophecy, and because this is The Elder Scrolls, nothing is true unless people believe it. (Hence mantling.)
Morrowind is very much about religion, and that includes prophecies and saviors and gods all being real. Prophecies, as written, are grand and cohesive and usually pretty simple. The Nerevarine is prophesied to be immune to disease. Do you, the player character, start the game with this immunity? No. You don't even gain an immunity to disease through some miraculous event. Instead, it's a byproduct of Divayth Fyr's experimental corprus cure. (And you're not even really immune to corprus, just asymptomatic.) This is the way things go in reality: messy, complicated, and only really fulfilling expectations if you look at it a certain way and squint.
This same perspective holds for the Tribunal. They're real, living gods, immortal and colossally powerful personal deities with personalities and bodies who walk among their people and want what's best for them. But that's only partly true, and even still people disagree on their nature and intentions and origins. It's a way of showing that religious differences (and really most important social divisions) don't stem merely from a lack of information or a failure of the divine to reveal itself. It's an inextricable part of our existence as people. The living gods are part of our society, and so they're subject to its idiosyncrasies and discrepancies, rather than the other way around.
TL;DR: It's complicated.
812369 No.15225089

The ambiguity is in whether or not you really are Nerevar reborn. You're the Nerevarine in that you carry out all the events of the prophecy, and that's the most important part, but there's no concrete evidence either way as to if Nerevar's soul got reincarnated into you. It's not all that important, but it does determine whether or not you're actually getting revenge, on people who wronged you, by destroying the Heart.

>The spirits of the failed incarnations in Azura's cave seem to imply the opposite, in fact.
The fact that there ARE spirits of failed Nerevarines proves that it is, essentially, luck. Azura's been shotgunning this incarnate business for millennia trying to make anything stuck. She sends her little "you are chosen" vision to people and Dagoth Ur sends his little "dreams" to the same people because Dagoth Ur doesn't fucking know either, he's just got a broadcast that keys in on Azura's pawns.
And prophecy! What were the first words you ever saw in Morrowind? "Without the hero there is no event". These prophecies are basically self-fulfilling. Azura said she'd do something, and she tried to do it again and again and again and again until eventually the dice struck gold and she got a genuine CHIMnigger fresh off the boat.

She either contributed to the creation of Mundus, in which case she's an Aedra, or she didn't, in which case she's a Daedra. I don't see how one could become the other. The fact that she manifests within Tamriel and appears to mortals seems to imply that she's simply a Daedra.

I disagree with the idea that you actually literally acquire Nerevar's soul and become Nerevar, at any stage in the game. There's a huge difference between a champion that happened to finish the tests and actually being reincarnated Nerevar. The tests were intentionally vague and wishy-washy so that ANYBODY could get in there and fill in the blanks.
It's like saying "you may become the Vivec" and then over the course of the game you paint half your body gold and learn about sodomy. That doesn't mean you literally became Vivec. It means you completed some arguably arbitrary tasks that someone (who is known to all to be a liar) arbitrarily declared made you "Vivec".

He used it as a convenient excuse
>You stopped loving me, and the meteor was your punishment
So long after he is gone, people remember it as being "their" fault and he's still seen in a way as a god they abandoned and were punished by the world as a result.
Vivec is a manipulative cunt. But what else can you expect from a literal chimer boy prostitute that had a hard on for his chimer hortator warlord, got rejected, then killed him and decided to use his divinity to try and rewrite history.
>>15225217
She was originally with magnus with the creating of tamriel, and left with him, when he blasted out of nirn, making the stars in the sky, but then got banished by magnus for consorting with Dagon or another daedra, and thus claimed her own small plane of oblivion with her powers. While the association with daedra/aedra is mainly attributed to those that helped mortals create nirn, for some reason Meridia is split between these two points, probably because she now acts like a daedra and can be worshipped to and give responses, unlike aedra whos will and consciousness is sapped by nirn.

This has always been a failing in fantasy settings that's rarely ever explained well. The best headcanons often point to the existence of magic basically "out competing" technology so that there's never a need or desire to advance it. Others use cyclical world destruction as an excuse to say that the world is destroyed and re-born and because of that they never break out of their technological state.

I don't think it was his intention to use the meteor to cause Red Mountain to erupt. He put it there to hold the city of Vivec hostage and ensure their loyalty, basically. (Or he couldn't stop it at all, and was bluffing.)
Dagoth Ur was effectively immortal anyway, so I don't think it would have worked.
Also, Vivec didn't go to Akavir, the Nerevarine did. Vivec is probably dead.

I've heard some people say that Tamriel's level of technology is actually moving in reverse: going from advanced to primitive over time. Not sure I buy that, though. I think it's just the typical fantasy thing of either: 1) laziness, or 2) a lack of understanding history as a material/technological process.

I'm pretty sure the advanced physics of our universe don't really exist in TES and everything happens through a form of magic. I mean, the sun is a fucking tear in reality and all the stars are just smaller ones. Aside from basic principles such as biology, friction, convection, etc., I don't think there's many similarities. I think that though you may have only become the Nerevar due to being in the right place at the right time, you BECOME the Nerevar in the sense that you are mantling him since so many people, including yourself, believe yourself to genuinely be the Nerevarine. In this universe if everyone believes someone to be someone else, then they are only that other person (see: Talos)

Just a point here: Technological advancement in TES is ass-backwards because of the way time works. The tech in the 1st Era was better than in the 2nd Era, which was better than in the 3rd Era, which was better than the 4th. In the 1st you had all manner of crap created by the gods, and even by the 2nd you still had moon-bases, ships, and all of the other Reman-era bs floating around. The only things left by the end of the 3rd Era were a couple of ships, and the Battlespire, which was lost to teh machinations of Mehrunes Dagon. In the 4th Era, there's absolutely nothing left. The world is literally dying, and by all rights, Alduin should eat the kalpa and let another one come into play.
With Alduin sent back to Aka-Tusk, though, it's unknown what might happen next. It seems that by the 5th Era, technology begins to improve, and continues to get better over time. So for whatever reason, something in the 4th Era happens to stop the degradation over time, and instead begin magi-tech acceleration.
