What do you expect out of vidya in the decade of 2020?

What are your hopes and wishes for vidya?

I'm expecting AAA to be dead and in return we're going to go back to B-tier games being mass produced by 1 company and optimized for huge amounts of levels and replayability.

I'm hoping for more unique experimental gameplay/untouched ideas like an insects adventure rpg simulator.

I'm expecting level editors to make a comeback and not only. I'm hoping for a new standard where the game allows you to instantly mod it by going into the settings and just changing a few numerical values - which would modify the very physics, hitboxes, gravity, collisions, scripts of the game. I'm hoping companies will brighten up and release the source code of their video games without all this obsession over copyright limbo and "keep your hands off my 20 year old game I never cared for".

I'm expecting multi-purpose freemium game engines to be dead and instead replaced by specialized editors. Which would allow non-programmers but truly creative game devs to make games without needing to waste years optimizing, modifying rendering values, physics, hitboxes, movement, guns/bullets, effects, designing AI, the gunplay, feel of a game etc.

Something like the Starcraft 1, Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3, GMod, Roblox game editors which allow for a huge versatile editing+scripting for different gameplay styles and interesting ideas, but under some limitations and under preassets, mostly.

More censorship, more kikery, more pozzing of Japanese games (And I don't mean just bad translations either), less complete games, less fun, less reason to bother with vidya at all.

Maybe I'll finally be free.

The only way vidya can go back to being great again is if copyright law were severely rescinded (so that they last like 50-60 years instead of as long as Disney needs Mickey Mouse alive) and LESS money was put into projects. The only games I consistently had fun with this decade were low budget ones or indie titles from devs that allow modding.

I've basically lost all hope of things ever getting better unless a real fucking happening takes place, something along the lines the whole fucking industry catching fire and going down in flames overnight.

Obviously that's not going to happen, but when you've been watching the moribund body of the video gaming industry continuing to limp along for over a decade despite consistently growing more putrid and decadent yet never seeming to finally drop fucking dead and turn into a hollow corpse from which something might yet be salvaged and new things built upon, it's more or less all you can hope for.

Not to mention that gaming, due to its ever-increasing reach and widespread appeal, is a great platform for (((certain individuals))) with deep pockets and nefarious agendas to take advantage of, so they'll continue to keep it alive and kicking to serve as yet another one of their breeding hotbeds for propaganda and social engineering, yet another perpetual machine from which they can relentlessly spread their poison and vermin to the masses, specially the young; it's too valuable for them to let go of so no matter how unprofitable it gets, they'll make sure it stays afloat.

Not much, at least nothing good. I expect the current trends of games getting streamlined and casualized to continue well into the late 20's. A lot of content bloat with no real depth. Like 50 weapons that all do the same thing, just slightly differently. The mindless-shooter-with-a-twist genre that I didn't even know existed 5 years ago will continue to morph into whatever becomes popular; battle royale will die out before 2020 and get succeeded by something even more meaningless and repetitive. Todd Howarding supposedly "hardcore" games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout will continue until even the action rpg name means nothing more than "this game has stats and xp n' shiieeeet". RTS, Mech and roguelikes will continue to be dead because no one plays those. I predict a lot of the same shit in the 10s. Most games and practices will be cancerous shit that only get worse, but a few goldies will popup from time to time. Oh and Bannerlord will release, maybe.

Companies see no reason to abandon pricing highly for reskined copies of games already released in the past 8 years. Microtransactions will only get more and more popular as games become more mobile-like. Skinner boxes, loot crates and social media is future of the 2020's.

I see AAA gaming continue on the course it's going, and probably raising prices to $80 a game + mandatory DLC packs. So, complete dogshit that normalfags will eat up anyway.

However, I hope to see a sort of "underground" industry form almost entirely separate from the rest of the market simultaneously - separate from the garbage of overdeveloped AAA trash, but also layers above the pretentious garbage of single-dev indie titles. Small companies of a few people putting together good games - stuff like Sonic Mania, or the like. Titles that have love and care put into them, but aren't just for some extremely niche market - enough to garner a fanbase to support the developers. Not quite AA developers, but certainly better than the F-tier retarded indie garbage of now.

Things are going to crash, the trendy gamers will all move on. SJWs are pushing video games in a direction that the market won't like.

I predict Xbox will die in the 2020s. MS will realize that using it as an experiment R&D platform isn't worth it, and that they can make more money by selling off existing studios and IP to Sony and Nintendo. MS will try something really stupid with the next Xbox, something that pisses everyone off again. But after two times being pissed off, it's enough for normalfags to get tired of it. Sony will just come out and say

>Here's PS5, it plays games and the latest Blu-Rays, and it does it all slightly better than Xbox 2 while costing less.

And everyone will tell Xbox to fuck off, minus the last few hardcore fans who think Halo and Forza are unique and amazing.

Switch will be Nintendo's last normalfag console for a while. After Switch, they'll have another Wii U situation, where most of their customers are just Nintendo fans. The Wii situation will never come back as the video game fad is going to die. There won't be much third party support, but they'll make a lot of really good first party games.

Cinematic games will die, people will realize that $60 for a B movie that lasts 10 hours isn't worth it, specially when they keep injecting socjus into everything. Facebook of all places is starting to feel the effects of catering to liberals by having the largest stock value drop in NASDAQ history recently. People turn to video games for entertainment because even if you're buying them, it's an extremely good money to entertainment ratio. But these cinematic games take that away, and you can do much better elsewhere. Most gamers realize they can $60 on some stupid FPS, RPG, sports game, etc and get hundreds of hours of it.

SJWs will blame gamergate for the collapse of their envisioned future where white male characters were removed from video games and replaced by cinematic, diverse mary sues. 10 years after GG started, they will blame everything on GG, and will never admit their cinematic, socjus gaming utopia never materialized because they are a fringe element of society.

Things won't continue on how they are going. Graphics will regress in time, they're not going to look like they do now. The hobbyist era of game development will come back, where people make games for fun instead of trying to get rich.

All the normalfags will just settle for mobile gaming, and only treat video games as another way to pass the time when waiting for things in real life. They'll stop viewing them as a form of entertainment, and they'll stop seeking video games that entertain them, only looking for games to pass the time when they are waiting on something. And even then, they'll have to compete with social media and other dopamine products.

I am optimistic about the future. If these cinematic games were doing very well, I'd be concerned. But look at the most popular games recently. They're games like Fortnite, GTA, PUBG, Minecraft, Rocket League, FPS, etc. Whatever you think about those games, they're not cinematic SJW bullshit. They're video games that revolve around game play and most of them don't even have a story. That's why the cinematic future is never going to come, no matter how hard they try and shill it. If it were coming, we would see cinematic games on the top of all the most popular game lists. Instead we only see them shilled by a bunch of cuck video game bloggers who can't make it past the cuphead tutorial.

Your expectations are optimistic but totally naive. The games industry has been licking Hollywood's crusty anus for well over a decade at this point, like a hopeless slave. Has the film industry had a renaissance of mid-level production movies made by independent, inspired people? No. Neither will games, unless there is a fundamental market difference between those two industries.

I believe what is really going to happen is games as a service. The idea of a release date will become harder and harder to distinguish until it eventually vanishes. Games will release with much less content than they used to but eventually accrue more over time, but the publisher will expect you to pay more money more frequently. Sadly and ironically, these games will be at their very best at the end of their lifecycle, but the publisher won't give a fuck and pull the plug on the service because they already released all the content on their roadmap and got the money they planned to get. The service model is highly prized by executives because it eliminates piracy.

To say that it's "hopeless" is somewhat inaccurate. However the industry has passed a point of no return. Before, good games would get made routinely because publishers weren't very keen on monetizing games, so they generally threw a chunk of money at a small but dedicated group of developers and hoped things panned out. Now, publishers have a strategy and many more people have skin in the game, so much more money is invested and (from their perspective) much more control must be exerted to ensure everyone makes a return.

Good games still get made every once in a while, but it takes a group of dedicated people, and they usually get snapped up by one of the mega-studios as soon as their first game is a hit. So you can still hope for a good game every now and then, but there isn't any way we'll get games like Starsiege: Tribes again which ran natively on Linux, were insanely optimized and played very fluidly. Those things don't directly translate to money made. Even "retro FPSes" which try to emulate games like that are mostly shit, with very few exceptions (I like AMID EVIL, but that's about it).

>Less titles on the whole, particularly with sports titles

The current $80 a year model doesn't work when there's more money to be had. What you'll see instead is one game released right at the beginning of the generation, then $5 monthly roster updates, with a larger $10/$20 update every year for more significant shit

>Racing games become the first to hit total realism with regards to graphics, or thereabouts

Gran Turismo has it pretty much nailed and has been at the forefront since 2001. Forza had it for a little while, then lost it, but with FH4 they seem to be getting their shaders back in shape again, the cars look markedly less "plasticky" than they did in the last 2 or 3 games. After years of mediocrity, Codemasters' F1 series is starting to look really impressive. NFS' paint shaders are among the best I've ever seen. And Dirt could dethrone RBR once and for all once every last kink is thoroughly ironed out and mods become viable.

>Seventh gen games start hitting the mobile market, then a little while later emulation gets to the same stage PCSX2 was a few years ago; far from perfect but serviceable in the least

I can see Dead Rising 1 imminently hitting mobiles in the next 2 - 3 years at the very latest. It was essentially a sixth-gen title with enhanced features.

>Games are not film, they aren't required to have a certain standard for normalfags to see it, the indie game boom is proof of this.

You are vastly overestimating normalfags and vastly underestimating how much marketers and publishers push for games to appeal to the lowest possible common denominator. As you probably already know, for the past 13 or so years the games industry hasn't grown by making better games. It's grown by making games which appeal to a wider audience. Those are two very different priorities. Normalfags aren't drawn to most indie games; they simply do not command the same audience that AAA games do. Sure they make money because Steam gives them massive exposure they simply would not have otherwise, but that doesn't mean that their audience is comparable.

>B-but PUBG

PUBG is for all intents and purposes a AAA game. It is marketed like one, it sells like one, the only thing it's missing is a bloated company behind it. And above all it is total shit. Please don't try to use this as an example.

>So if games as a service is the way of tge future then how exactly will the Jews prevent piracy?

In software development lingo, a service is a detached component which provides something so an application can do its job. What this means 99% of the time is you are connecting to an external server so your app can work. It is extremely easy to do a little checksum verify and realize you are playing a modified/illegitimate copy of the game and deny you service. By moving most or all of the content of a game behind a connection to a server, you are effectively killing piracy to your game assumimg your servers have decent security.

Yeah, but the whole point of GaaS would be to move as many assets off the initial release as possible and make updates so frequent and incremental that you're basically always playing an unfinished game even if you manage to get a particular version of the game running via hacks. Basically it would make the game as unsatisfying as possible unless you either buy the game or get it set up after it has run its lifecycle.

I don't expect much change besides gaming get slightly expensive because the executive branch of the companies won't like having their lootboxes removed, so they will want to profit from somewhere else.

Hate to be devil's advocate on this but I'm imagining the worst case scenario of computer software.

And man, GTA V was probably the best one of the AAA bunch presented here but I don't remember anything else disappointing me so much in the latest years. >It doesn't have to be about technology.

of course, an example from the 2013 stuff is TLOU, now I am going to go on the record and say I do not -hate- TLOU1, I genuinely feel it did a certain number of small things right that would be cool to see expanded on BUT people ate up the story and forced walking segments, so people tried to emulate it's success so you get more story bogged games that don't even have the decency to make story elements skippable. I expect TLOU2 to be irredeemable trash especially after Uncharted 4 was a fucking abortion. I really wish the journo scene would fall out from under itself already because I know normalfags don't really care about the story that much and just think the stories are good because they are -told- it's good, but the developers and publishers see the positive feedback regarding story elements and push harder on those. Casuals wouldn't care at all if a story was bad if the game kept them occupied enough

>>15220860

You've got to remember one key thing that got pretty much memoryholed in the years since:

From 2008 - 2013, Call of Duty practically held the AAA scene hostage. When GTA came back with V, it was almost like a welcome breath of fresh air. The biggest thing in gaming got effortlessly squashed by the thing whose power vacuum it tried to occupy in its absence, and people loved it. To use a /wooo/ analogy, it's the exact same feeling people had when Brock Lesnar returned in 2012 by destroying John Cena. Like a mixture of nostalgia and catharcis.

Pic unrelated, but still interesting.
