Do you guys still play Mario Odyssey?

Have you collected all moons possible?

8d002d No.15198184

Define all moons possible, you counting store moons?

I gave up on those after the literal niggers couldn't keep their balloons in the actual level.

Doesn't really draw me to keep playing it after beating the post game levels. The hat trick is nice but isn't interesting enough on its own to pull me back.

Lost interest halfway into the game. Platforming isn't that good I had to make my own fun with the hat jumps. No Nintendo games have any soul left. After BoTW I stopped caring about Nintendo.

No and no. A good number of moons are just too tedious and boring to collect. I'd compare them to red coins, but at least those only had one set per stage.

Agreed, the issue I have with it right now is that it's basically empty. In short bursts its pretty good, especially the balloon mini game. However I feel that the open structure of the game hurt it in the long run.

While I had fun with Cappy, I still wish that they'd stop with the fucking gimmicks already. There was a consensus for years, and it's still around but not really paraded as often, that Nintendo HAS to innovate. This was really big during the GC and Wii eras. That's when Nintendo decided to innovate, and their version of innovation for Mario is shitty annoying gimmicks that detract from the actual platforming. Meanwhile, stage themes are still as generic as they ever wore, with Odyssey being the first since 64 to try something a bit original in that regard, and still failing in a few cases. It's sad that somehow, Mario 64 is still one of the highlights of the fucking genre, when it's not really that amazing.

60deb2 No.15200576

>>15200566

I think the issue is that they're trying to hard to focus on the children. It's the same issue that Smash Bros and Sonic suffer from as well. The game dev teams are too focused on making the game sell rather than making a fun game, When the marketing department should be the ones who should work hard on selling the game. Not the other way around. Game devs should never try and be businessmen, they're terrible at it and both the marketing and the end product suffer as a result.

60deb2 No.15200585

>>15200566

>>15200576

Also to add to this, apparently the only reason Super Mario Odyssey was a 64 styled game rather than a Galaxy 3 was because Minecraft used a proper camera system. Before that they were worried kids couldn't use the right stick to use the camera, that's how out of touch they are.

b605ce No.15200599

>>15200585

Oh yeah, I remember that. To be frank, they're not entirely wrong. My sister plays Autismcraft on her laptop I've also got her to play better games, but she refuses to quit it anyway, and she's struggled with both Mario 64 and Spyro, mostly due to lack of experience. She cried over Spyro, I remember, one of the early levels.

60deb2 No.15200612

>>15200599

Well yeah, but that doesn't excuse the fact that kids nowadays are playing games like Call of Duty and Fortnite. Kids aren't fucking dogs, they can adapt to a game if needed. It's not like these games are trying to be Ace Combat. Hell I'd argue that kids could even play a game like Devil May Cry if they wanted to.

a741d8 No.15200616

Marketers don't know that. They also don't know that a lot of kids play these games like Fortnight to look cool.

And they probably don't realize that Mario Odyssey's playerbase is mostly identical to the Switch's ownerbase. I mean, I'm sure that there are some in this graph that bought a Switch for their kids, but if they did that, they're probably far more likely to also play it themselves, or play with their kids, and parents who just want a shiny toy for their kids would most likely just get an iPad instead.

b458de No.15200625

No

I played a bunch and got something like 600 moons. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but feel no drive to poke at every corner of every map and get absolutely everything. I'm fine with just getting all the fun ones.

60deb2 No.15200626

>>15200616

Which is a huge fucking issue since they need to know these things in order to sell the product. It's why I consider the video games industry to have the worst fucking business people who have no idea what the fuck they're doing. And the devs who support this shit like Sakurai and Iizuka are just part of the problem.

Exactly, the days of the Wii are over. Nintendo seems to slowly be understanding this, but still try to cater to that audience in hopes of bringing them back. Then again having groups like Treehouse who try to push Nintendo as "The Mario Brand" rather than a diverse video game company is also a massive fucking issue. Yes Mario is Nintendo's Mickey Mouse, but even Disney couldn't survive off Mickey Mouse alone. It's why they made movies based off shit like Snow White and Peter Pan and continued to do so even after Walt's Death with Lion King and Little Mermaid. The issue with Nintendo right now is a lack of focus between the three departments. Nintendo of America wants to be the Mario Company while NCL wants to cater to every single person and that never ends well.

>>15203545

>>15203576

Delfino would be pretty fucking crazy, but if there was any challenging content it would probably be only after beating it first. Unless they go full crazy, and sell a new set of levels and places with a warning that this content will be challenging, which wouldn't be what they would do for fear of not selling as much DLC. Although one can always hope

That's definitely true in Japan, you see really weird demographic breakdowns like Tales of conventions being 51% female and such. Gaming just never caught on among western women though, and then the gamer grill thing happened and poisoned the well forever.

You know, I've been meaning to go on a rant about progression in collectathons and how Odyssey eschews what it unintentionally made the standard, but instead is more consistent with more recent Mario games. 3097f8 No.15211402

Off and on. But that's not praise, I just like having "empty" games that I can play and not think about. I think of Mario Odyssey as only barely above a clicker game, in terms of engagement.

7a6711 No.15211563

I stopped playing it after going for the extra worlds. But I will echo >>15208625 's remarks, maybe not best, but most consistent, since m64

eba4e5 No.15211823

I think one of the bigger problems people have with it is that they're expecting Super Mario 64, or worse, a collectathon, but that's not really the case. Super Mario 64's major collectable, Stars, are very much like completing a full level. You can see this more clearly in the Galaxy games. On the other hand the most standard collectathons (for the record, Banjo and Spyro) have you completing an objective more often than not. It's not a terribly important distinction, really, but it's there. You also don't have any minor collectables (henceforth called thons) in Super Mario 64 (the 100 coin star is padding, don't let anyone tell you otherwise) but in Spyro and Banjo thons often gate progress and moves. Now, Galaxy 2 has comet medals, but rather than thons they seem to be more like secret exits? On the other hand, 3D Land and 3D World do have collectables, but they serve a different purpose. The Star Medals and Green Stars, respectively, have nearly identical traits. They lock your progress at points, requiring you collect a certain number, and there are three in every stage (with some extras scattered about). They usually require very little beyond exploration and occasional minor challenges, although some of them are more complicated than others. Similarly, Power Moons are actually more similar to the collectables in the 3D titles than anything else. We can probably do some statistical analysis on this, of a sort anyway. I'm going to give the ratios for the minimum reqired collectables to beat the game, the minimum required for the last real roadblock for each game, and the total collectables available.

3D Land: 100/290/335

3D World: 170/342/380

Odyssey: 124/500/880(not counting the shop moons apparently)

What I find most interesting about this analysis is that the minimum requirement for game completion is a similar actual number, clearing most roadblocks takes a huge percent of collectables in the 3D games, but is more lenient in Odyssey, and the fact that Odyssey has so many more collectables, although that's somewhat expected given that the game has a much larger scale and the fact that these collectables also seem to replace 1-ups, serve as story beats, and the end reward for more structured challenges. I don't know if anything I said was worthwhile, but I thought it was neat.

I liked parts of Odyssey but I hated how short the main game was and how alot of the moons were moved to the post game and used in the same fashion each level. If the game didn't try to pad so many moons in and spaced them out more(also had more obstacle course moons over gimmick moons and random ground pound rooms) it would've been much better to finish to a full completion, I think at the very least Odyssey is worth playing up until you finish Dark Side but full moon completion is a massive chore.
