Sorry, OP, but it seems like we're being raided by stormfags or something, so allow me to bump the thread. It has potential.

I picked Cyrus, I don't regret it. Mage Sherlock Holms is fun and his ability to know one random enemy weakness at the start of combat is super useful.

The only demo I played was Primrose so I went for H'aanit. Her dialect is ridiculous but fun.

I'm only now wrapping up the eighth recruitement, having done only one chapter 2, Ophilia's. I like the gameplay a lot, but I'd say the greatest flaw of this game is the utter lack of interaction and banter in the party. Saw only one so far.

Also, I was really expecting something more along the lines of Seiken Densetsu 3, as in you picked your party among the entire roster and that was it. As is, you're clearly meant to get all eight.

Yeah, playing the demo, I have to agree. Most of it, I can survive, but the fucking DOF effects are unbearable. Everything is so fucking blurry if it's not directly at the depth of focus. Things turn into a blurry fucking mess like 10 feet behind the characters. I can handle bloom, I can handle color bleed, I can't handle looking at a screen that is 80% fucking blur on a constant basis.

Gameplay is fun, though.

I don't usually like jrpgs and all the dumb shit that come with them, like long tedious grinding, but so far I'm 15 hours in and haven't struggled with anything, the mooks are pretty easy to take on and the bosses offer a nice increase in difficulty, the only thing I find lack luster is how many skills you get, but that can be easily fixed with having secondary jobs for your characters, I didn't expect much from the game and was pleasantly surprised by it

Having complete break coverage is amazing. Never have to worry about getting shit pushed in by basic enemies in higher level zones. Also love that your job points work across classes, no need to grind away as a suboptimal class setup just for that SP regen passive

Is this game romancing saga, where you play as different playable protagonists and the story eventually converges? Or am I misreading this?

Just finished the last of the stories.

I thought the final bosses for each chapter ranged from being a ton of fun (Alfyn's and H'aanit's finale) to just a dumb slog (Primrose's and Olberic's). Its a shame, since Primrose and Olberic had arguably the best stories, but the actual final bosses themselves were beaten in the same generic "break shield, heal up, repeat".

Conversely, Alfyn had a fairly meh story, but his finale might have been my favorite. Its pretty cool since the fight with the ogre eagle basically comes down to your standard battle strats for the first half, and then once it unleashing its poison cloud then its this massive DPS race to the finish while your health cap continues being depleted. I finished the fight off with everyone under 1,000 capped health, which was instant death for almost the entire party based on its AOE attacks.

Anyone know if there is any sort of of content regarding the Gate of Finis" Considering half the stories end with a reference to how important it is, I'm going to be kind of pissed if its just there for no fucking reason.

Olberic is pretty much the best startin tank character and with the skill that unlocks his damage limit you can regularly hit 13k-20k in one attack of his divine skill on a break.

also since he's a base warrior he can be paired up well with the "secret" classes from the level 50 class shrines

the skill is called saving grace and you get it from the cleric job class, I think you can spam heal till you are 9999 haven't tried it out yet, the slight down side being you have to equip saving grace to all characters if you want to get everyone to 9999hp it could be very useful when using bewildering grace to grind exp, it could negate all the damaging curses except the one that puts your party to 1 hp

ophelia's story gets semi-interesting in the last chapter, but its still pretty meh.

Olberic, Cyrus, and Primrose have some of the better stories.

The really interesting thing with the stories is how some of them subtly relate to each at the very end. Like for Alfyn and Tressa, its subtly revealed that Tressa's diary, which she has valued throughout the entire game, despite it being half filled by someone else, was actually previously owned by the guy who saved Alfyn's life as a child.

And all the various loose ends regarding the Gate of Finish afterwards as well.

I'm actually trying to experiment a bit with therion myself… I've put him as a dancer, hunter, and a merchant, and so far hunter seems to working out the best for me, since the 4 weapon split + 2 elements works pretty well at covering a lot of options. I've also had some success with merchant, although I honestly just find myself using it for the wind magic utility above all else.

On that subject, does anyone have any good suggestions for who would best fit the advanced classes starseer and runelord? I can't really get a good handle on who they would be good for outside of obvious weapon utility.

Same here. I picked Cyrus because I liked the nerdy booky character with the useful ability to know enemy weaknesses and reduce random encounters, but I didn't realise he would be so fucking fun to play as.

The second member I recruited was Ophilia, which was a bit of a mistake since she uses the same main weapon so I lost some weapon type/ability coverage there (although being able to summon a chosen NPC to fight for you with a weapon is pretty sweet). Then I recruited Tressa and she is fun too. Then the demo ended and I just don't have the fucking money to buy the full game.

I just hope they give the ability to turn off, or at least tone down, the post-processing. The DOF, the bloom, it's all a bit much. I like the diorama feel, but it's just so heavily overdone.

Agreed, Especially with Xenoblade selling better than ever, and this game doing very well. I'd be surprised if they didn't bring back something like Chrono Trigger or another JRPG throwback for the Switch at least. Still in terms of overall support I'm a bit worried, especially since Ys and Shining Resonance bombed and the Yakuza guy saying that the Yakuza games aren't a good fit with Nintendo's platforms. Additionally I'm worried all the shovelware may drive off potential developers who wanna release a full 40-60 dollar game on the platform rather than a 20 dollar cash grab. Still I'm hoping to pick up this game soon, and I hope it's alright despite rumors of the story being shite. The demo was pretty fun. so at the very least we should expect more demos.

I think Nintendo actually partially funded the game, and at the very least is the publisher for the game outside of Japan. Similar to the deal with Bayonetta 2 IIRC.

Without Nintendo it wouldn't have happened, which would be a shame because it's the best JRPG I've seen in years.

I really do wish there was more banter, or at least unique dialogues for the chosen main character clearing main quests. I'm on board with a premise of a low-stakes RPG just following eight people and their quests, but at least pour everything you have on characterization.

For those who picked a support character as your main, how is it working out? I mean, obviously the game allows for any character to become a powerhouse with the job system and the nuts, but it's sort of a tradition in JRPGs to have the main character be the damage dealer. And only Olberic, Cyrus and H'aanit are meant to be that prior to any job mixing. So I guess I'm just curious how support protag playthroughs are going.

I chose Therion as my main and I'm going to go ahead and continue preaching the gospel of Therion tank. Focus on his evasion and make him a warrior and your party will barely never damage. The only thing you have to worry about is attacks that target everyone, but you can just use items or a healer to deal with that. Therion tank dodges 75% of damage at the very least. Negating damage (dodging)>>>>taking damage (high defense).

This game encourages you to swap out characters (and make no mistake, you are meant to get all eight dudes), the only one you really need to specialize is your starting character since he's not going anywhere.

Also Alfyn is kind of weird as a healer. He's clearly status effect oriented. That's good offensively since, rarely in a JRPG, poison really hurts the shit out of some bosses, but not defensively as enemies rarely go for status effects. You're primarily looking for group heal, and that's what Ophilia's here for. Now, Alfyn can do a better group heal than Ophilia, but it requires specific items.

Not really, he gets a minimal SP regen on physical attack, more health, and status effect resistance, which as established isn't that useful generally speaking.

A better reason to take Alfyn along is that you want to inquire everyone and going for Cyrus isn't advisable with the sheer amount of scrutinizing you're going to do. Alfyn is without risk, but he needs to be leveled up.

Well, for me personally, I enjoy RPGs first and foremost as a system. So if the gameplay is there (like FFT) then I literally could not care less about the story. If it is good, great, icing on the cake. If it sucks, whatever, I can ignore it and just stick to the fun (Disgaea).

Hell, I could even enjoy what they seem to have intended for this (I LOVE SF short story collections and novlettes) IF it was done right, and IF the game mechanics are there. So far the story is tripe, and the translation is garbage.

How do you feel about the mechanics? I love a good grind (Dragon Warrior, EO4) and I love tactical stuff (FFT, Disgaea).

I think the gameplay is genuinely great. It doesn't fully unfold until you get a full team and one or two secondary jobs, but basically the fights are set up so they're not so hard they'll wipe you in a few turns, but you absolutely need to use your turns intelligently to find out the weaknesses and unleash the focus the most efficiently you can. It's not something you can win with dumb mashy tactics, it asks you to pay attention. It's definitely not grindy as it's one of those games where the weaker party members level up super fast if they're in a higher level area.

I like that the stories are down to earth instead of japanese metaphysical jungian garbage, but I feel like the lack of interaction means the characters have no actual reason to be together and are pretty much your standard character-created party from Might and Magic; faces on a screen with stats that don't ever talk and should have have just been replaced with a single solo character. The lack of a party with interaction is what also ruined Dragon Quest 9 for me, because I love the talking and personality you get from stuff like TiTS.

I've never had Amputate fail on me, so far that I think about it. And Alfyn's Concoct hits all the elemental breaks on demand AND counters all character status effects, how's that for versatility. I'm in the process of doing everyones chapter fours and here's my opinion of everyones stories so far:

Ophilia: Comfy pilgrim adventures until the twist.

Cyrus: The Club Dumas: The JRPG.

Therion: A depressed, pretty-boy thief embarks on a series of violent home invasions.

Olberic: Seems like it could be your typical movie about a samurai. Kind of unoriginal, but I guess it's alright.

Primrose: An interesting revenge drama. The twist was extremely predictable.

Alfyn: Comfy traveling apothecary adventures. I really enjoyed basically the entirety of chapter four's story. Very touching.

Tressa: Comfy merchant adventures. Tressa should have her own game.

H'aanit: It seems like it's just hunting the monster of the chapter and this somehow moves the plot towards the confrontation with that Redeye thing in a contrived manner. I do enjoy how clueless she was about that bodyguard guy wanting to give her the dick. I wonder if that was something added by localizers, or not.

Cyrus' story seems to be shaping up to be the best, so I'm saving his chapter four for last.

Speed affects turn order and affects some abilities (like the Thief's ult, which uses speed as its damage stat instead of physical damage). Speed is also randomised like damage, so a character with a high speed stat isn't always going to go first, but it is going to go first more often. I figured out the issue with the overheal ability. It doesn't allow you to continuously overheal. If you have less than max health, whatever healing would go over your maxHP gets added on, (150maxHP, 125currentHP, healed for 50 means 175HP) but if you're at maxHP or above you don't get any extra health. Not as handy as I thought but if I'm regularly topping up with Boosted More Heals the bonus should help avoid wipes.

Compared to most rpgs I've played lately I've definitely found it worthwhile. I'll warn you that it's rather formulaic and you'll see the story beats coming a mile away every chapter, but it's a better formula than you'd get out of something like a modern FF. Having separate stories don't bother me. Though I did end up seeing the travelers as "jobs" more than characters in the end. Octopath Traveler scratches my itch for a good Squaresoft style JRPG. Lufia and the Fortress of Doom I still recommend as a flawed gem because it actually has a really good progression and decent level design if you can get past the encounter rate. There are items that help reduce or increase encounter rates depending on if you need gold for gear or not. Until close to the end of the game you can use gold to buy gear instead of levels to judge how strong you need to be because leveling is pretty balanced until then. Also with the map screen in the background there's less chance you will forget where you are and get lost. The game is slightly unfair but just fair enough that you can complete the game without a guide.

That is until you get to the RGB towers. Whoever made that quest should sudoku. It's literally back-tracking the quest.
