Your friends are adults and have confirmation bias. To a child, however, you can easily be an authority figure. My sister spent most of her days playing those Talking Tom games on her phone, while mother played facebook games. I don't see them too often, but I do what I can. She started watching minecraft videos on jewtube, and playing bootleg minecraft on her phone. I convinced her to play it on her laptop instead, taught her WASD, too. It's not ideal, but at least she's not melting her fucking retinas by shoving the phone into her eyeballs. From there, I showed her Terraria, Plants versus Zombies was one she picked out, got her to try out some NES games, though she did struggle a bit. Had a lot of fun with Zelda 1, she did. And a couple months ago, like I mentioned, Doom and Doom 2.
You can do it. The important thing is to help them understand the game. Kids tend to be afraid to try new things. My sister, I recall, would cry because she couldn't avoid the skeletons in Minecraft with WASD, but I helped her out. Same with Doom, and Terraria.

Doom is a good choice, the control scheme is similar enough to Minecraft, so that's a huge help. Really, any game that uses WASD for movement is good for them.
A good way to get them interested is to play multiplayer stuff. I got sis an SNES Classic, and we played some Mario Kart. From there, she tried getting into Mario more actively, though does struggle a bit.

When it comes to the fad, yeah, no one understands how fads work. Like a decade ago suddenly everyone was wearing Crocs. They look ugly and stupid but since it was a fad everyone had to get a pair. The fad was irrational but Crocs as shoes are quite functional sandals and I doubt anyone would question the appeal of sandals even if they didn't understand the Crocs fad and thought they look like overpriced garden shoes with holes in them.

Not too hard to get the appeal, even if you don't like it yourself. Who even expects depth from an online game mode like that? One new thing that pubg and its clones perhaps introduced to the masses was a large map compared to other mainstream shooters like Call of Duty with its tiny death boxes. Maybe the mainstream herd collectively thought that large maps and slower-paced combat is something refreshing. Might explain the popularity. Still, FFA with a shrinking map is not even a new concept and nobody questioned its appeal before it turned into a fad.

I've overheard people talk about playing battle royale games in public before and it always goes one of two ways:
1) They're bragging about how many victories or near victories they got
2) They're talking about how they and their buddies were super wasted while playing it.
There are two types of appeal the genre has and I'm gonna tell you about it right now.
The appeal is the hyper-competitive nature of the gameplay and how the genre lies to you about how skilled you are. A guy plays PUBG and he dies in 4th place. He didn't rack up 90+ kills to get to that position, in fact he saw no one the whole match and was just headshot by a sniper because he was oblivious to his surroundings. But because he got 4th place, he feels like he's better than 95 other people. That gives him a real warm and fuzzy feeling and that feeling makes him want to play again. He might get good enough to consistently place in the top 10 and the need to make it to first will keep him playing 5-6 a night, every single night.
Also, the appeal is the social aspect. These games are so popular that it's not hard to convince your friends who don't already play it to get into it, especially since Fortnite came out and there's now a free battle royale on the market. It's easy to be social in these games too, since there's typically a lot of downtime between combat encounters. So between shootouts you can make small talk with your friends whom you haven't actually seen in person for several years now. The game is not important to these people, instead like many things people do, it's just an excuse to socialize and to drink.
In short, it's not the moment-to-moment gameplay that hooks people in. It's purely psychological reasons the players make up for themselves in their own heads. Whether it be the game tricking them into believing they're good at video games because they simply were one of the last people to die, or because they believe that playing this game is their best option to stay in touch with friends.

I played maybe six matches of Fortnite after a normalfag friend of mine wouldn't stop nagging me about it. Half of those matches we got into the top 10 without ever fighting another group of players and looting a metric shitload of towns and buildings, then died to some faggots who had better luck and had a rocket launcher and everything else they've ever needed. The other half of the matches ended with us dropping somewhere, running into a building, finding a stack of wood or a medkit, while the other guys run into another room and find a shotgun and assault rifle and kill us.
It combines the worst parts of those early access survival games, which is running for half an hour to find a bunch of loot, then getting sniped or killed by someone who simply had more luck finding shit, and modern military shoters, which are shitscan weapons, RNG weapon spread, tiny TTK, a fake substitute for advanced mobility, etc., and jams it all into one disgusting 15 minute long package.

Honestly, BR games carry a similar appeal as ASSFAGGOTS, in that it's easy to get caught up in the grind for "hype moments." Shit, it's even easier to do in BRs. Get fragged at game start? That's fine, just go back to the main screen and queue again. Died near the end of a match? That's alright, they don't last that long so you don't feel like you're wasting your time, just go back into queue and have fun again.

There's a lot of high-chaser games like this. MOBAS are a big offender, whenever people i knew talked about them it was "oh you have to play a bunch of shitty games but then you get that one awesome match that hooks you". Also it mitigates losses like BR does, even if you played poorly but got top 10 you feel like you did well, in MOBAS you can say "well we lost but i got most kills/most gold/most whatever" and overwatch did this too in an extra gary way with assists counting as kills so you could say "well i got "gold" kills so i did good". Overwatch also doesn't have a regular scoretab, you can't directly see other players stats, you just see your own and if you have gold/silver/bronze mean your'e in the top 3 of that particular stat

For 2 and 3 you have to look at the context within which things are happening.
Most of it is fine, except for the unbearably repetitive maps of 2 and Imca's gunblade in 3.
