Now I don't know exactly what you wanted to get out of Dunning-Kruger but I believe the trade-off of ridiculous, unnecessary graphical strides vs game-play interactivity is a negative sum stride for modern day games and (while I admittedly can't do it myself) is more than likely outside the ability of more than 3/4ths of today's game developers.

I never played a game where destruction physics were anything more than a gimmick with little to no meanigful choices attached to it. BFBC2 destruction was easily exploitable in maps with objectives inside buildings, destruction also meant small linear maps and simple repetitive geometry instead of well laid out buildings. In RFG instead you just go on and on destroying stuff with no thought but I guess that was the point of the game, I also think it is pretty difficult to design ai able to understand and react to destruction physics.
Modern developers simply decided to take less risks and avoided exploring this technology further considering the mediocre results and performance costs, and that's bad, but I don't think muh diversity is the cause of it considering that R6 Siege is the only recent game that tried expanding on small scale destruction with some success.

The thing is the higher levels of siege play are all about destruction and intelligent use of utility. Once everyone knows most of the common angles and has good shootout sense/reflexes you need to use vertical and horizontal destruction, explosives, etc. to make pushes on dug in enemies who are actually good and have their own traps set. This goes for defense as well with the use of impact grenades you can create denial points from sneaky vertical angles. One of the hardest things to master is using cam information to nitro cell someone who is a floor above you unless well you use pulse and just wait for people to plant or stop moving.

You can't have a good game without decent internal systems that affect gameplay. Of course goymers are happy to buy lootboxes and FPS in small maps so it matters on what your definition of "good" is, if good is profitable then that new Command&Conquer should be pretty good.

TBH it's probably the most creative game ever made the person who invented the soft mira "meta" even though it's pretty stale is beautiful in it's simplicity.
You just use a low mira window and use her almost useless secondary shotgun and make a couple high holes above the window and use it so you can toss nitro cells at people who can't even see you. Most mira's don't do this and they probably should seeing as how it's especially powerful when you use it on a staircase and know when some faggot shield and his posse are about to do some dumb push.

One in particular mentioned how it was a novelty, and that in a certain game the physics only needed to be used once with the way the buildings were laid out. The other times you could use it there were better alternatives to achieving your goal.

Those big cinematic explosions are scripted, they're not dynamic like in the Blender cube demo. If you turn on the developer commentary they talk about this with the bridge/portal-storm scene at the beginning of Episode 2.

It's not mine. I'm currently trying to figure out the best way to implement an almost universal (all objects can be broken down) physics system though that's very performance efficient and this system is appealing.
I imagine pathfinding would work like normal except with some check for debris in front of them that they would probably check to see if they can go over first and if not then keep trying different routes until they find a non-blocked one.

Destruction mechanics require some lateral thinking on the part of the player. What to destroy now, what to leave, what benefits me most in the current situation and 5 minutes from now. That doesn't play well with the current generation audience that has been fed AAA cinematic experiences for 10 years. It's also hard to model the physics in a convincing or at least satisfying way, and removing destruction simplifies level design a lot. So the two main culprits are an uninterested audience and corporate cost-cutting. That's money they could be spending on advertisements, you know.
