How the fuck is this shit so fucking fun? I've downloaded this yesterday, and after playing through a few runs with a necromancer character, I feel like making another of some other class even though I'm feeling kind of tired of playing and want to go to sleep. I have never seen a game more addictive than this shit. And having played a few rougelikes, this one seems like the most fun to play out of them all. I mean holy shit, the religion mechanics basically MAKE this fucking game.

I'm not sure exactly what changes he's referring to (it's been a few years since I played) but in general the trend is for the devs to remove things at seemingly at random (gods, races, spells, whole parts of the dungeon) and to make the game slightly harder with each patch.

That's why I don't play these games. They're always changing shit constantly. Fuck that, I don't want the ground falling out underneath me once I get comfy with a game. And I don't want to have to maintain an old branch myself, deal with libraries and compilers and related shit that you have to on modern computers and OS. That's why I stick to roguelikes you can play on really old computers that are trivial to emulate.

Its better than you might expect, but out of 3 different versions only one works. And controls are fucked up, even if they are slightly optimized. Movement is tap instead of swipe, and diagonal movement is basically impossible. Also

It's really fun to look through the race attributes and find the synergies. Like you wouldn't think spriggans would make good trog worshippers since berserk costs hunger, but because they get to sacrifice every single corpse their piety goes up real fast.

My favorite idea was to get a vampire up to the point where he could safely scum the abyss, then hoard decks of wonder via nemelex xobeh for endless exp and mutations. I only managed it once. Turns out it's really hard to get vampires to that point because their offense is awful.

What are anon's go-to strategies? Haven't played the newer builds but I hear gnolls have insane aptitudes while not choosing which skills to train. Must be pretty popular with ashenzari's skill-exp swap thing.

I am reminded of the post that takes the bit about newspeak from 1984 and replaces "words" with "features".

Eventually there will be nothing in DCSS but MELEE, RANGED, and MAGIC. Magic will only have DAMAGE SPELL, HEAL SPELL, and UTILITY SPELL, which on casting allows you to banish an enemy, teleport yourself, or some other shit.

There are now only SWORD, BOW, and BOOK. Enchantment scrolls allow access to greater to hit and damage bonuses, using the same on the book will allow access to the next of your three spells.

There is only four gods, one for each character and Xom.

I used to really enjoy TrMo of Nemelex. Trolls have insane unarmed damage and Nemelex is partly just and partly covers your weaknesses (utility). My classic "I just want to win" combo when I was a more inexperienced player was DEFE or DEWz of Vehumet. I also really liked bows once I figured out how to manage ammo so naturally I enjoyed CeHu of Okawaru. I wouldn't be surprised if the those combos don't even exist anymore, or have been changed beyond recognizability.

The way the devs are going with the game, I doubt I'll ever play it again. Lots of good times, though. I used get in voice chat with a couple of friends and we would play online, stopping to spectate and give advice whenever one of us got into a tough spot. We even participated in a couple of the tournaments as a team. Ultimately two of us achieved Greater Player (win with all races and classes) and Zealot (win with all gods), and I'm satisfied with that.
