Be honest. You forgot this existed, didn't you? It was Nintendo's attempt to create a fighting game that broke the mold the same way that Splatoon did for shooters. It was stylish, had good music, ran at 60fps, had a variety of modes, it practically doubled it roster with free updates, the designers behind it clearly put a lot of passion and polish into it, the girls were cute with a high porn factor… and no one fucking cared.
What went wrong, and if Nintendo were foolish enough to make a sequel, what could they do to actually make their toddler and 30-year old manchild fanbase care about this franchise?

Didn't Nintendo already do that like 20 years ago? Arms was just Nintendo making a shittier virtual on where you play as characters that look like they're from banjo kazooie nuts and bolts. Virtual On is still better, will always be better, and Arms was padding for odyssey. Touhou Kabuto V Burst Battle is also better.

arms doesn't break the mold like splatoon does
splatoon took political military shooter genre and gave it a bright colorful non-violent spin
arms is still a punch-on
i think it might've succeeded if it did what gem fighters did, and went a comedy-action route.

It's an extremely limited gameplay concept that rapidly gets boring if you try to play more than an hour or two at a time.
Once you're in combat, your only options are:
>Walk / Dash / Charge
>Throw a normal punch (trajectory and angle variable)
>Throw a charged punch (trajectory and angle variable)
>Throw out a grab (trajectory and grab area variable)
>Guard
>Jump
>Use your character's signature ability (via one of the above)
There's no context-sensitive button inputs, where your position and movement direction would change what moves you can perform.
There's no real variances in the fighting styles between characters, outside of their extremely specific traits.
There's no character-specific combos and super moves, just generic flurries of charged punches.
Compared to other fighting games, it looks and sounds about as complex to play as Street Fighter 1, with little potential for mindgames with your opponent.
Compared to something like Punch-Out, close-up and complex stationary targets are replaced with distant, simplified, moving targets., and all the potential gameplay nuances from that fixed perspective are lost.
Basically, having a lot of game modes and generously free character updates can't fix a game if the core concepts are broken.
Looking at even game's artstyle, most of the characters don't have that "instant appeal" inherent in Nintendo's most successful properties, like Splatoon. This alone could've saved the game if they'd nailed it.
Making most of the cast humans was probably a mistake in that regard too, even though we got some good cuties out of it.

>arms doesn't break the mold like splatoon does
There was a conscious effort to try and recapture what they did with Splatoon for this game, right down the the weird made up alphabet that appears on damned near everything. The extendable arms gimmick is neat, but it amounts to throwing a straight punch or curving a punch, and not much else. An attempt was made, but they didn't go far enough.
>>15183342
Can't find anything in your post to disagree with. You're right. They nailed the art, the presentation, that likability factor that you need with a roster of unique characters, but the core gameplay just isn't deep enough for anything but casual play.

>What went wrong
I honestly think they had a bad first impression from the start and didn't get spread/tease enough info at the initial reveal back in Jan 2017. Here's some other points I'm observed, sorry in advance for the blogpost.
>Initial reveal showed 5 fighters as playable with no teases or ? spaces on selection screen to show that more were yet to be revealed. Leading to some (including here) that there ONLY 5 characters in the entire game. The only mode they showed was 1 on 1 (while being capable of 4 player fights) and no single player content or other minigames
>The closest thing to a future character tease were the creatures with DNA double helix limbs in the glass tubes in the laboratory stage. Most people didn't even notice these creatures in the early footage. Strangely enough I think Bill Trinian referred to that stage as "Mechanica's Laboratory" when it turned out to be Helix's home stage, (Mechanica's home stage is a scrapyard)
>Use of motion controls (which already have a negative stigma) leading to the insults the likes of I already played Wii Sports Boxing, thank you very much and while mentioning a motion control free options in interviews (or playing with a single Joy Con instead of two), didn't demonstrate them at the event or reveal trailer
>Not revealing new fighters sooner after the reveal, ARMS was revealed on Jan 12th, while the next fighter to be revealed (Min Min) was 3 months later on the April 12th Nintendo Direct. After that Nintendo finally started ramping up the reveals and had a random trailer for Helix appear on April 28th. The ARMS Direct which revealed the final 3 characters (for a roster of 10)was on the May 17th just a month before the game's final June 16th release. It should be pointed out that Nintendo may have teased (or accidentally leaked) those 4 characters at the bottom of a menu screen during Min Min's reveal.
>The daily new info/art (like in the OP) from the official ARMS twitter account (ARMS_Cobutter) was Japanese text only and a fan account would have to translate it. This was the closest the game would get a JAPAN TIME Smash blog style info updates. Some of Nintendo official social media accounts would randomly post official translations of those twitter post/pictures weeks later (and they didn't even do them all).
>Nintendo's fanbase wondering why we needed a new fighter when we already had Smash (without being aware of all the crossover character rights issues)
>Releasing the game too close to Splatoon 2 (released just over a month later on July 21st) and not giving it enough time to "breathe". In a bizarre situation the Splatoon fanbase doesn't like ARMS or any attention/updates it gets because they think a "dead" game shouldn't be getting updates while Splatoon 2 should (this rivalry seems reminiscent of an older child being jealous of a new baby in the family getting the attention). To make this situation more ironic this is coming from a fanbase whose first game came out on a dying console while the ARMS and Splatoon dev teams work and mingle and give feedback about each others games on the same floor of Nintendo of Japan.
>The strangest thing of all, is that the original Splatoon was announced a year before release didn't show single player footage (Octo Valley) until 5 months later, didn't show that many weapons at it's reveal (just the 3 different types, shooter, roller, chargers), mentioned a 1 vs 1 local mode in a interview (that no one even likes or played and is gone from the sequel) and somehow everyone "understood" what the game was about and how it played. ARMS was revealed 6 months before release and yet the game suffered from a confusing marketing message that only got cleared up a month before release with the ARMS direct

>and if Nintendo were foolish enough to make a sequel, what could they do to actually make their toddler and 30-year old manchild fanbase care about this franchise?
From what I read, a lot of fans want a proper single player mode (with story) which seems like something that could just add to the original ARMS. It's strange that people want to BUY a sequel when it feels like FREE mode content updates to the original could fix it. Even weirder were fans wanting a sequel long before the first anniversary.
>I think they should pander to the lore faggots out there and just say the world of ARMS is the same Earth as Splatoon. Like say, the 100% audience ARMS tournament viewership lead to neglect of the environment, the oceans rose, humanity/land animals dies out, oceans recede, sea life evolves and reclaims the land. Have a boss fight against an enemy using a rusty version of Mechanica's suit, a Planet of the Apes/Statue of Liberty on the beach homage with a spring like arm holding up the torch. ARMS clothing pieces as "retro human collection" Splatoon clothing
>Give weekly updates of new weapons (like Splatoon did)
>More depth or combos than just punching straight or curved? More asymmetrical characters like Min Min?
>While it won't happen, an ARMS fighter playable in Smash Ultimate will make people want to play ARMS like how Bayo in Smash made Nintendo print more Wii U copies of Bayonetta 2 in 2016

The Switch sold extremely well, and according to kikepedia, ARMS sold over 2 million copies worldwide. I have to think that this IP is at least partially successful for Nintendo. A year later and it's still kind of around, doing Splatfest style events every few weeks. However, where Splatoon 2 is thriving and having one of its biggest events yet.
>>15183776
The Wii U was a colossal failure. Even though the first Splatoon did well and attracted some late console sales, Splatoon 2 continues to do well because it's a good game with a solid core gameplay experience. The point about ARMS having boring, limited gameplay holds true, but what bothers me about this is why ARMS came out in this state. They seem to know what they're doing with the Splatoon series, so why didn't they recognize that ARMS was shallow and unrewarding to play for hundreds of hours like they probably wanted?

I'd say Spring Man is pretty likely if they're even adding new characters at all, since he's at least relevant and an actual Nintendo character. 20-year old Square characters who can't even keep their cameos in Superstar Saga can keep on waiting.
One thing about ARMS is that it's surprisingly hard to get into for a game that's so simple in premise. It really is a fighting game in the sense that it can be hard to control your character and actually know what you're doing - to make the comparison to Splatoon, that game still controls like any of the 3D shooting game (especially if you turn off the motion controls) and you can jump right in to the kiddy-pool low level matchmaking and spray your goo around without needing to learn how to control the game, while ARMS has its whole unique control scheme that's still pretty complicated even if you don't use the motion controls. Maybe the kids talking about ideas for a sequel are right, ARMS feels kind of like trying to make a fighting game by going back to Street Fighter 1 and starting over from the beginning.

It's still a possibility, but likely as paid DLC, since the game is due to release in 5 months. Either Nintendo will need to start announcing new characters now-ish, or we won't be hearing anything about them til next E3.
Incidentally, I went digging around and found out that they were going to do an ARMS graphic novel this year, but they pushed it back to next year. Maybe they are working on a sequel or something big and want the release to coincide with a reason for people to remember the game exists? Also worth noting that they did try to create some story and lore for ARMS… but it's all on twitter. They couldn't think of a way to put it in the game, so they just trickled out some vague images and text on fucking twitter.

They've got to expand the mechanics. On-the-fly arm switching would be a start (rather than between rounds), but they need to add more options to use the meter rather than just having the one super rush that's the same for everyone. Good fighting games have plenty of variety between characters and variety in the ways an individual character can be played, but in ARMS that comes down more to your loadout choices rather than what you do during the fight itself.
