So what type of first person dungeon crawler games are you guys are you playing and interested in, what kind of mechanics do you enjoy from them, and any future dungeon crawlers coming out that you're interested in?
Bonus question:Do you think that turn based dungeon crawlers should at least have a bit of a resurgence in western countries?

I like most first person dungeon crawlers as long as they aren't roguelite randomly generated mess.
As much as I liked making maps on graph paper its hard to go back to older ones which don't have an ingame mapping feature like Etrian Odyssey.

They're pretty challenge and hands off in regards to story telling in general but if you wanna start try operation abyss, demon gaze, or elminage if you want a challenge. Money will be hard to come by though.

Anyone know if it pirates well, or should I go ask the vita thread guys?

I'll believe it when I see it. Besides, he said he wanted to release V2 before the anniversary which is in…. 2 weeks.

I recommend going to the vita threads since they've released a new exploit to help you pirate games and you don't need a specific game this time. Just make sure your vita is at most at 3.68 filmware.

Well there's ray gigant you can download it on steam or Pirate it. It's not remotely challenging accord to what I found about the game. I also heard it gets a bit more repetitive the longer you play it.

You can try out the Valhalla Knights games where the combat is active and you can see the enemies in the dungeons. There's 1 and 2 on the PSP with 3 on the Vita. 2 has two different versions of it, one being called Battle Stance which limits your party size to a max of 4 but introduce a quick travel method to get around the world rather then legging it everywhere. The other is just the regular version, which keeps the max party size to 6.

Does anyone have any personal experience with bard's tale IV to share? Anyone playing the beta?
The character and creature art is absolutely fucking atrocious when compared to any low budget japanese dungeon crawler, and I anticipate combat with a slow, plodding pace, inexplicably poor performance on low to mid-range machines, and a user interface that is both unattractive and cumbersome to use. I've already accepted these things will be true given the developer involved, how it was funded and the country where it is being made.
But is the exploration and puzzle side of the game, the story, the overall immersion good enough to make up for it? Could it scratch the same itch as grimrock II?

I've been playing Might and Magic IV and V: World of Xeen and it doesn't have any random encounters. All enemies you can encounter can be seen walking around visibly. I don't know for sure but I suspect this might be true for other classic western dungeon crawlers as well.

M&M4+5's gameplay style was introduced in M&M3
M&M1 and 2 had random encounters
M&M6 and up evolve 3-5's gameplay into a more fully 3D implementation (off the grid)
I recall that Wizardry 8 didn't have random encounters but I might be misremembering
D&D goldbox titles had many set encounters in addition to random encounters

I really wanted to like Elminage but it feels way too aimless. I played Original on the 3ds and found it boring. I got the 6 rings before even finishing most of the dungeons and the fame I got from completing sidequests was absolutely worthless.
I only saw people talking about the post game on the internet but I don't like post-game content in general. It feels like a tedious grind for grinding's sake.
I tried playing MM1 but I'm having trouble with the DosBox that comes with the gog version. The text scrolls too fast to read unless I lower the CPU cycles but if I do that the music and sounds stop working properly.

Grimrock was pretty good. Looking for similar games I've seen pictures of Might & Magic X but the steam reviews are pretty bad so I haven't given it a try (that and I'm kind of short on time at the moment). Is it because they dropped the 3d movement and went back to grid?

MMX had crippling bugs, to the point where I hit a gamestopper and had to stop playing it. I think they updated once since then and then gave up on it, I'm not sure if it was all fixed or community patched or what. But it wasn't that bad of a game, I liked it more than some of the Japanese Vita crawlers being talked about here that have really easy combat and big mazes full of nothing. Don't forget to pirate the DLC as well.

I don't think you'll have to worry, the first game already sold enough on the vita for them to warrant the sequel, it's just gonna be awhile before they announce it since it has an ass load more text because it's 2 games in one (the enhanced remake of MS1 has a few new lines.) They'll probably announce the localization sometime after Death end re;Quest releases and do what they've been normally doing for their releases; Console version out first, PC a few months afterwards.

Because Wizardry had random encounters. DRPGs are probably the most unchanging genre you'll find.
Call me a heretic, but Etrian Odyssey is pretty much the best series to have come out of the genre, simply because it maintains what's interesting while being much more tightly designed.

>Call me a heretic
Why? You're correct. Every other crawler nowadays feels like filler between EOs (and PQs). Most other Japanese ones are more interested than having lewds over challenge and deeper mechanics beyond getting the biggest AE to shit on every non-boss fight in one round with. While Western ones are either shoestring budget and buggy as fuck, or if they aren't, they're based off Dungeon Master instead of Wizardry. EO faithfully builds on the Wizardry formula and improves it, I have a hard time feeling engaged without FOEs and their various gimmicks to deal with in the other modern games. Mary Skelter's Nightmares were a huge disappointment in comparison.

I downloaded the GoG version because this thread spurred me to play a comfy animu dungeon crawler. It indeed has an option for Japanese audio and it runs nicely on my shitty laptop too. Only graphics options are resolution and window/fullscreen/borderless, but it looks good enough anyway.

I feel the same way about the game. Dungeons and combat is definitely better than Demon Gaze 1 and 2 but not as good as DT2. Though I would say both games have better music than Mary Skelter.

depending, so for example in PoR the random encounters were limited to X numbers depending on the map as you reclaimed the city. I think the first area there were only 15 random encounters that could happen before they stopped since you pushed out the goblins and kobolds
