Its kind of strange to think we lived to see a console gen where Digimon is objectively better than Pokemon. Pokemon doubled down on 'catching a new audience' and we got shit like "sorry my dog is blocking this entire mainland traffic route, go on this long tutorial route around the edge like a chode" and those of us that grew up with red and blue/gold and silver didn't hate it but certainly found it tedious and getting in the way of the actual game.

Meanwhile, Cyber Sleuth, Next Order and Hackers memory have been some of the best digimon games this side of 2000. All because the 15th anniversary revival of digimon took a brand dying from ds/ps2 shovelware and no western anime releases and focussed on the original core audience now on average like age 25 or above. So you get mature characters, stories and lewd women and digiwomen. I found new success not in trying to be the B tier Pokemon but in appealing specifically to the audience Pokemon dropped by chasing gen Mobage while Digimon went 'hey kid, you like persona or monster raising sims?' and it was a huge win for them.

Now Survive has a bleak tone, even the name suggesting odds are stacked against you rather than adventure or exploration, and it makes me wonder if any other ips will go 'maybe aiming for an older audience is the way to go?'.

Imagine if they did the same with final fantasy and called it octopath traveller or Megaman Battle Network? showing 'more adult and dark' can mean a game for adults rather than edgy tryhard stuff like conker which can only come off as a parody of itself.

Omegamon, THE omegamon, was her partner according to cyberslut lore.

He got divided into agumon and gabumon on the way to the real world because the hole in-between analog/digital space that he came through wasn't like the big hole that crusadermon opens up with cybermagic bullshit, it was a smaller hole, and omegamon was 2 big to pass fully, so he got fragmented in order to pass through.

This is where shit gets fucked. There are a bunch of games for WonderSwan that are sequels to Anode/Cathode Tamer, but have no English releases, including translation patches. If you google around you'll find sites where people have the text translated and you can read the script, but unfortunately, nobody has injected it into the games yet. While Anode/Cathode Tamer has a simple story, the sequels build off it and are essential to the overall lore. Tag Tamers also builds up the backstory of a key character from the next anime, which makes everything way more impactful, since you're supposed to have played as this guy for half of an RPG before you ever see him in the anime.

People sometimes say this anime is bad but while it has its faults, I still think it's pretty good. Actual sequel to Adventure, so I'm already invested in the characters and world. As for the new characters, well one is a protagonist from the last WonderSwan game. But without that he's still cool. The others are meh but the old guys are still important. Lots of neat worldbuilding here too.

Pretty fun card game if you're into that. Story-wise, it's a sequel to Digimon World but takes place near the end of the first arc of Adventure 02 (like maybe 10 episodes in?) and focuses on those characters. Technically establishes that Digimon World and Adventure happen in the same universe.

There are two of these. One takes place near the beginning of the anime, around the same time the card game would take place. The other takes place just after the end of the anime

Not as good in general since Tamers is the best, but it's still okay. Kids turn into Digimon which seems weird but really it's no difference once you start watching it.

A different universe than anything else but crosses over with 02, Tamers, and Frontier at different points. Was running since before the anime started and ended shortly after the anime ended, so it crosses over with whatever was airing at the time. I think he met the guy from the WonderSwan games too, I forget. Anyway the protagonist is an alt version of the main character from Adventure but it's not actually the same guy. I don't want to give anything away but it's really great and even Digimon fags seem to have rarely read it even though it was clearly very influential to the rest of the series. You could try to read the beginning before starting the anime and read it all in order so you see the series evolve, but you'll understand the anime without it so whatever.

never played this but I hear it's a prequel to the next movie, so if that's the cast it's important to the lore because the stuff from the next movie is important later on. Anyway this is apparently not a monster raising sim or RPG. None of the Digimon World games have the same genre or universe. It's kinda bullshit but the first three were all fun anyway.

>Digital Monster: X-Evolution

standalone movie (except I guess it's a sequel to Digimon World 4). Deals with and expands a lot of lore important concepts but I won't spoil it. The CGI is kinda shit though.

Anyway the anime went on hiatus for a while after that and I never caught up and watched the new stuff except for Tri, and it's shit. But people say the later stuff is good. Also Digimon World 2 and 3 for PS1 are good but I can't think of ways they'd be important to the lore. Still 2 is a fun but very obtuse dungeon crawler and 3 is a pretty good JRPG but get the European version because it has more content. Also the stories are all totally different universes again and I don't think they cross over with anything. Confused the hell out of me as a kid.

Also, don't let me intimidate you. While all this stuff is really cool if you look at all of it and see the connections, each thing is done so that you can understand it on its own. You don't need to see Adventure to enjoy Tamers, but there's lots of neat stuff there if you have. You can enjoy each bit on its own and they'll seem mostly unrelated but fun, but the WonderSwan games weave a story in the background to tie it all together.

Dear god do not try to rewatch the dub. I can handle some dubs from the time like DBZ, largely due to nostalgia. But the Digimon dub is seriously unbearable. It ruins lots of great music and injects horrible jokes, many of which are very specific to American states considering the kids spend half the series visiting specific neighborhoods in Tokyo. On top of that there's blatant censorship (for some reason a couple characters can't die and are instead "sent home," which causes the protagonists to cry uncontrollably. A whole ton of characters die anyway so it's pointless). They change names but sometimes they forget what they changed the name to so later they'll give the same Digimon a different name. Sometimes they change a name and then later the name they changed it to is actually used so now that other Digimon also needs a different name. Or sometimes just two have the same name and you're just gonna have to deal with it. Anyway a lot of the things, like games and manga, aren't even officially translated so you'd get the original names anyway, only if you're following the dub you won't know what they're talking about because different names. Also some names are meaningful and are foreshadowing but the meaning gets lost in translation. Granted its lost in subs sometimes too but you can still at least hear it and maybe pick up on some. A lot of the lore bits are subtle and sometimes they accidentally remove references that tie things together. And don't even get me started on the dub of the movies. I say dub singular because they tried to edit three movies together into one movie. The first movie takes place in a totally different timeframe, and the third movie focuses on a totally different cast. The original cast had a subplot but they cut it entirely even though it's the only part to connect even indirectly to the first two movies. But fuck it just throw some Barenaked Ladies songs on there and kids won't be paying attention. Now I love Barenaked Ladies as much as the next guy but seriously do not watch the fucking dub.

It's worth finishing the first arc; those initial 20-ish episodes are the best part of the series, and one fan-favourite character goes through a major personal arc. Episode 13 should not be missed.

As for the OG digidestined, they come back for full-time involvement and extra character development in the penultimate arc (aka. Digimon World Tour), just before the 02 crew get spoonfed their Mega / Ultimate levels and shit briefly gets crazy.

I thought it was that people were aware of Digimon existing, but the Chosen Children didn't want people to know that they actually had Digimon going around with them. I mean if it were me, I would be afraid that people would freak out after the time Digimon Dracula took over Tokyo and serial killed a bunch of people before turning into a kaiju. I wouldn't want them seeing my Digimon and wanting to take it away for some reason. Plus, at the end of the season when the battles start becoming public again, people seem to know what Digimon are.

Digimon Adventure is the story of kids who once embodied honorable and desirable traits like Courage, Friendship, Love, Curiosity, Responsibility, Purity, and Hope, only to have life beat these traits out of them and leave them relatively cynical. They have been forced to "grow up" only to lose what made them who they were, what made them good people. The Digimon represent these traits, and the protagonists essentially have to rediscover them and make them part of themselves again in order to reach their full potential.

Mimi lost her Purity and became a self-centered bitch, but learns her lesson, as most of the characters do, and becomes very selfless and extremely kind afterwards. Sora is supposed to represent Love. Her upbringing caused her to block herself off from love and be unable to let herself experience. What was this upbringing? Her mother wouldn't let her play soccer because she was afraid of her getting injured. But alright, as dumb as it might be she has an episode where she learns her lesson and will presumably be better from now on. But no, she continues being an emo bitch. Matt does too, despite having recaptured his sense of Friendship, but that was only because the Dark Masters were specifically trying to fuck with him. Sora has no excuse. Then in the movie, she is throwing a fit because Tai got her a birthday present that wasn't good enough for her, and because of her stupid tantrum, she doesn't help when Tokyo is about to get nuked. Not to mention the obvious, more personal thing of simply being mean to a friend. But hey, just a friend, because I guess the hairclip he got her was so bad she leaves him for the bad boy rockstar instead. Because that's what the physical embodiment of Love would do.

Kari represents "Light." What the fuck is that? Generic is what it is. Hope is already covered, Purity sounds kinda close but I guess it's not. Love and Friendship and Courage and all the rest are more specific so they don't hit all the same notes. As far as I can tell, the Spirit Evolutions would be regular Digimon species anyway, and the humans just happen to turn into them. Though I don't know why they never actually manage to turn into AncientGreymon and AncientGarurumon even though those two guys seemingly power up all the way. I guess because they only power up that far by using everyone else's spirits, so if they just used their own spirits but powered them up a ton they'd eventually become the forms of the Legendary Warriors they got them from.

Also it's weird that Susanoomon doesn't get to be a Royal Knight. The protagonists from the first three anime and the manga do, plus Mangamon from 02. It feels like the Royal Knights would be cooler if it was straight up just all the strongest forms of the protagonists from the major entries.

I vaguely recall watching the dubs of Adventure and Frontier while they were airing, but I remember one episode and I think it's from Frontier. However, I remember the Digivice from the episode I watched was designed differently from the D-Tector in the anime, so my memory is fuzzy to say the least. Essentially I recall some character, who I can't place exactly, turn into a Digimon and get trapped into that state while watching a duplicate of himself go through the motions of his life in the real world. It was a more horrific take on that same mechanic happening in shows like Chaotic, before Chaotic even came out. As a kid the very concept of that happening horrified me, which is strange because I hear the dub softened things down and Frontier is less dark than Tamers.

Does that actually happen in Frontier? I'm probably familiar with the whole tokusatsu aspect since I also watched Megaman NT Warrior back when it did the same thing and I'd be up to a trawl for something that takes it more seriously.

Step one:

They brought back Vamdemon because he was the fan favorite, obviously. But I think it worked well enough. It worked with the idea that Digimon that are killed in the real world exist as ghosts, which was established earlier with Wizardmon. I meant more like a game that makes sense. A beat em up, a strategy game, etc. Even a war game with different factions each having different abilities would be neat. the Olympus digimon and their enemies would be great for it. Multiple squads of rookies or champions to command while your generals would be ultimate or mega level digimon. You would command them or choose to take control of them when fighting another group. Something like that would fulfill my desire for another kingdom under fire.
