Prioritize them, Stun them with chaingun, use the level layout to your advantage. They were built from the ground up to counteract people who just keep the super shotgun out at all times, the delay in between shots is enough for them to seriously screw you up, but you don't have that problem with the chaingun. DOOM isn't a modern FPS where you can just pick your favorite weapon, shut your brain off and use it for the rest of the game, they are all situational. I wouldn't say chaingunners are poorly designed, just poorly used. The idea is for them to challenge you in a way not normally challenged, forcing you to completely change your tactics when present. Where you would normally be out in the open dodging things, they force you to either take them out fast or take cover. Their high threat also serves as a means of directing the player, often into traps, as they either try to rush in and kill them fast or run away. It is entirely up to map makers to use them properly instead of just dumping you in a room surrounded by them, in which case that would be poorly designed maps.

UV -fast has the same instant reaction on wake-up issue where as soon as a monster closet opens up they can start shooting. On standard UV there's a slight delay before they can shoot after being alerted, which gives you a bit of a chance. Even on standard UV if they come in through a teleporter trap they've already been through the wake-up delay.
That said if they aren't used obnoxiously they are manageable, but hitscan-based enemies are still bad by design. There's a reason a lot of mods make them fast projectiles instead.

Plasma Coil is also useful against them if you've got it upgraded and modded (should also state that grinding 1,000,000 on NG for the best armor sucks without the Challenge Mode multiplayer), but it still takes a while to down them, at least on regular NG. And for whatever reason they had the gall to send you out into the Raping Fields not once but twice to progress with the plot. Becomes more a case of avoidance in dealing with them and the ice serpents, whereas I liked the prior desert style crystal stuff in comparison (both being mostly abandoned shitholes with "collect the crystals"). Sure, it was optional padding, but the enemies were managable and made for good weapon leveling in addition to money. You get to Grelbin and within about two minutes of being there you want it to be over.

Well the unupgraded one is more fun (just spinning while jumping and killing pretty much everything around you for example ) to use and more ammo efficient if you're good with it (in 2 at least it got slightly nerfed in some way in 3 so you can't hit something over 3 times with a single unit of ammo).

Enemies that can damage attributes, even low level ones, are a greater inconvenience in terms of resources than enemies that could hit for hundreds of hitpoints because it costs you to restore those values in addition to killing that enemy. Having an enemy whose only purpose is to force new players who are unprepared to savescum is poor design, and would be called out in any other game

Because I don't have to load the game if I have restore strength potions and it adds verisimilitude. Not to mention having those effects in the game means the player can use them too. Because I posted a poorly designed enemy in an otherwise good game, and contended the standard meme answer of cliff racers was incorrect. I'm not against the damage attribute effects, I'm against enemies that can cast it a few times and permanently immobilize me, even after death, forcing me to search through an inventory of identical potions to restore the attribute.
There is only one way to bypass this enemies effect, and that is with magic. If you play a Nord who hates magic in all forms, you will be forced to reload upon facing this enemy because the game won't even let you try and crawl away afterwards. The Cyberdemon has a ton of buildup and it's not a particularly hard fight since his arena is really open. The Spider Mastermind is a more annoying fight by comparison because his damage is hitscan.
Level designers also tend to use the Cyberdemon in more creative ways like I remember in No Rest for the Living the final level had you being chased by one in this really dimly lit labyrinth with tons of zombiemen all over the place which prevented you from dodging his projectiles effectively.
By comparison the chaingun guys are just spammed wherever they are and are usually designed to initiate a cheap death/reload for the player.

Depends on where he is. In the example of Plutonia MAP07 you A: don't have the BFG, and B: there's a lot of awkward pillars for rockets to explode on near you, and to hinder ability to attack him. Dooms levels were built intentionally so that there was contrast between light and dark areas, dominant colors in the textures depending on where you are, etc. Many of the levels are also quite open, and there's stuff like windows letting you see other parts of the map to get a better feel for how they connect. The only place I can think of that's maze-like is the cluster of green rooms on level 7, and even then you have the auto-map.

fuck these guys, everything else in the game has a hard counter but the only way to deal with these things is to out last them and then have some capacity to strike them while they regenerate or spend a disproportionate amount of resources blasting them to smithereens outright weakening your efforts elsewhere. your ability to do so is almost completely up to the layout of the map and since they aggro based on proximity their nest could be in a serious hell hole making suppressing their rebirth or regeneration completely un-viable. dealing with these shit heads is some kind of mixture of trench warfare and surgery.
there are certainly some terrible sitautions you can find yourself in with the wrong equipment while the enemy has the right mutations but anything related to guardians is all but guaranteed to be a giant thorn in your ass
