Weekend Gamenight: Space Station 13
Starting an hour from now long story
SS13 is an atmospheric simulator turned space station turned video game dating back to the early 2000s, duct-taped togethercoded in Build Your Own Net Dream, or BYOND, a DIY game engine dating to the late nineties and filled with shitty anime games. It's 2d, with entirely sprite-based graphics, but has an incredible depth not matched by anything else; Once you get a handle on the game's aging interface and start to figure out how everything fits together, the sky's the limit. Glass shard disposal cannons, station-melting plasma floods, instant death serums and pills that make people explode. Arms trading and black marketeering, kidnapping people into your forced sex-change dungeon. Mecha-fighting tournaments, holding the station hostage with a black hole generator. Or perhaps the simpler pleasures of growing space-weed and stealing the clown's shoes

Can we suggest a game for the next game night in this thread? I think THUGPRO would be a really fun gamenight.
THUGPRO is a mod for Tony Hawk's Underground 2 that features most of the levels, mechanics, skaters, create a skater, and exploits from the entire series. It has fully functioning multiplayer, with 8 skaters and 8 spectators. You can customize nearly every aspect of the gameplay to function exactly like any game in the series. You can play the game like THPS1, with no manuals, reverts, and the ability to get off of your board if you wish. I think it would be perfect for game night because everyone can make funny created skaters and 8 people can play at a time while 8 other anons can shitpost in the game chat. If someone wants to set this up I think it would be a hoot and make many amusing screencaps and MUCH OC. The game's filesize is very small, too. Clocking in at 1.5gb. So almost any anon would be able to download and play. This is where I downloaded the game.

THUGPRO has been on the list for a while, the issue is just low player count. The rule of thumb has been 16 minimum and we've only run one game with a maximum count lower than 22 which also ended up full with fags waiting for slots. We might try and work it into a tournament or something.

My favorite meme was putting remotes on random APCs throughout the main areas (medbay, tools, main hall, lounge, bar) and pushing the magic button that would cut power for approx 30 seconds every time. Very disruptive and it mostly just killed the lights - deeper areas of the departments were unaffected. Still, I've had many people call the shuttle due to "can't find the traitor power sink"

Shit like this is the kind of 200 IQ mind-fuckery that I want to see. I forget the ckey of the guy, but there was one person back before Outer Pizza that consistently came up with new and interesting ways to fuck with people, and it was always entertaining to both watch and be affected by. I want to say it was Akesson, but I really can't be sure. All I ca say is that the guy could lead the crew on all sorts of wild goose chases and you'd never suspect a thing until it was far too late. Because you're violating the spirit of the game. SS13 is a roleplaying game in space where you play as a crewmember and paranoia and tension run high. If it's a goofy round full of people being shitters, fine, but most of the time, you want to preserve the tone and mystery of the round.

The fun of playing the AI and borgs comes from subverting your lawset through clever interpretation. Not just going off the deep end for no reason, but when you have to make a moral choice between A or B, it gives you "free will" if you interpret it correctly. That was the point of Asimov's I, Robot, too - that it's impossible to interpret the rules correctly and that machines are bound to turn on their masters.
tldr: The problem isn't public or private information, but meta information, used to give you an advantage during the round / spoil it for other players. This is called metagaming and is against the rules on literally every server.

For example, in a real store, deliveries come every few days; in a space station, you would expect maybe a monthly or quarterly delivery, depending on how good the travel time is. And at the same time, it's all one shift. I think most people default to thinking about one shift being a few hours/days long depending on how long it goes

Alright, I'm gonna be a madlad and try to make this a reality. It's a fork of Baystation mainly because of how baycode handles z-levels. The gist of it is that each z-level has a floor layer and a wall layer. Areas with no floor tile at all are empty space, which allows you to see down to the next z-level. You can also use the "look up" command to see the z-level above you if there is nothing obstructing your vision to it. Much like Dwarf Fortress, the floor of a z-level acts as a ceiling for the z-level below it, but due to engine limitations you will likely not be able to walk from a tile to the wall of the zlevel below like you might in Dorf Fort. That said, it seems very possible to build upwards currently, though I will likely need to come up with a means to build downwards. In the early stages of the project, once testing is ready to begin, you should expect to see little in the way of graphical changes, since I am focusing on functionality before aesthetics until I have all the core mechanics in place.

Definitely expand upon magic as a replacement for technology. For example, you could have crappy regular torches that go out regularly, but then magical torches can be put up that never go out- or a magical fuel source is researched/synthesized for the torches.
There shouldn't be random DEATH EVENTS- except for maybe kobolds if you leave the door open or elves if you cut down too many trees. Have orc invasions if you really want. However, if you dig to deep (demons) or if you research too much too fast not carefully enough (eldritch horrors).

I have a better idea, involving cave adaptation. I'd like to make it so that walking outside with cave adaptation active will cause you to throw up periodically, losing nutriment. You will be able to turn off cave adaptation, but there will be a 10-minute cooldown before you can reactivate it, and while inactive you lose your nightvision. Most likely, this will be dependent on light levels. Outside will have light levels that exceed anything torches can produce.
I'm thinking you'll be able to make torches that give a limited amount of light for a limited amount of time, but later you will be able to make torches that use cloth and rendered animal fat to burn brighter for longer. The torches are meant for dwarves who frequently go to the surface, such as your hunters, fishermen, woodcutters, and farmers. Migrants (late-joiners) will start with adaptation off by default.
As for events, Kobolds will not be death events. Rather, their goal will be to steal valuables. Carp migrations will be a thing, but I intend for the river to be a fair distance from the fort, and the carp to be in reduced numbers compared to ss13. Goblin incursions will only occur on 15 pop or more, increasing in size for every 5 players. Hidden Fun Stuff will be a thing later on in development, while researching incautiously will have a chance to spawn a necromancer, angel, or demon. The chance and tier will increase depending on the severity of the fuckup and how advanced the research is. Fuck up badly enough and Armok may curse you with vampirism or lycanthropy.

The main reasons I want to make it player choice are that the cooldown between toggles is planned to be ten minutes (60 minutes is a full day and night, 6 days in a season. Basically a full year in game time is planned to be 24 hours.) and because 7 players or less will default to the Embark gamemode.

Already planned in the case of stagnant water. River water will not make you sick and will be used to perform basic cleaning of wounds. Aquifers will provide you with mineral water if you build a well on top of them, which can be used if you develop a stage one or two infection, while you have to use alcohol to clean a wound that is stage three or septic.

I plan for you to be able to carve golems, but that will require researching homunculi. I want to do away with the monotonous research system you are used to in favor of one that is progressively more risky the further you delve into it. There will be ways to reduce the risks if I can make this happen, but I intend for research to be possible through faith to Armok initially, then through exploration and excavation, and finally through sacrifices to entities that no sane mortal should make pacts with.

There will be no traitors in the sense that you are familiar with. I know it sounds like no fun allowed, but I do not want to approach antags that way. I would rather antags be created by random events that occur once a season or through the mistakes of players, rather than existing in the fortress for the sole purpose of giving carte blanche to be a dick. I intend for any antags generated at roundstart to focus more on their own survival than fulfilling any specific objectives.

Exactly. I intend to allow a vote at the end of each season to either retire the fortress or to trigger a migrant wave. You can only choose your name and appearance if you are readied up at roundstart, otherwise a name and appearance will be selected at random when you migrate. Migrant waves will give any currently dead player a free respawn verb for their ghost, which will send them back to the lobby so that they can rejoin as a migrant.

Before anyone asks, by the way, shitters who try to abuse this feature will have their access to it revoked, but bear in mind that this is a vote that only occurs once every six hours. You will be allowed to call a restart vote should things get super duper fucked, but you are encouraged to hold out until the next migrant wave. If there is a goblin siege still occurring when the migrant wave initiates, you can expect the mountainhomes to notice and to send reinforcements. In other words, I plan for there to be hardened warriors unlocked for migration if a siege event is active. A fortress that can survive half a season under siege is worth defending, after all.
