>feels as if it was going to break any time

Soon I discovered I was supposed to move it with the tip of my fingers and not with my wrists, like the other arcade, but by then it was too late. Turns out all Japanese arcade sticks are like that, which means most modern fightsticks are like that, and the other arcade cabinet had American style levers, which are generally much stiffer, have circular gates, and made to withstand pretty much pulling the whole cabinet from them in contrast to Japanese arcade sticks, which everyone mentions how easy it is to break them if you don't treat them like a princess' clitoris.

>be browsing for affordable begginer fightsticks

>try to find American style recommendations

>"just use a Sanwa and change the springs lmao - be careful not to break it tho"

>"use an unmodded Sanwa and get used to not breaking it"

>"Sanwa are soooo much better for QCF motions if you don't break them in the process"

Is there any hope for subhuman brutes like me?

Also, arcade stick general, I guess.

how do you hold the stick?

2f7743 No.15141972

>>15141954

I hold the American sticks with my whole hand, usually performing most of the motion with wrist movements. I tried to apply my American stick (traditionally, my country's rare arcade cabinets had these) knowledge to the Chinese knockoff machines, but that obviously didn't work, so I learned I had to actuate the lever by resting my hand on the cabinet and doing small movements with my fingers, rather than with my whole hand. I have no idea if it is that the machine isn't all that good or whatever, but it feels cheap to me.

Can you be more specific, do you just grip it with your palm touching? fingers are wrapped around the bat stick? etc.

You should be moving your forearm as well.

For example: I hold the stick with my hand wrapped around the stick. the pinky is in front of the shaft, while the other three digits are wrapped around the balltop/battop. the palm does not rest on any part, see pic 2

The Shoryuken thread I was reading specifically recommended against X-Arcade due to being overpriced pieces of shit. They comment on using IL Eurosticks (fairly cheap, from what I have seen) or Happ Competition ain't that what's mounted on X-Arcade controllers sticks instead, but some people seem to comment Happ Competition sticks are shit now. How true is it? I'm not even sure if they sell these mounted in some box already or if I have to DIY, but it's not like it is a deal breaker.

>>15141989

It's more like the first grip. See pic related. Sorry for the stupid looking photo with the alcohol bottle, but I have nothing like an arcade stick at home right now.

You don't say.

I've been using pic related for ~5 years and it's been dropped on the floor many times. Despite that I haven't ever ran into a problem with it. I wasn't aware about the stigma towards Japanese parts, but it sounds like you just need to buy a stick with a circle gate and get a bat stick seperately.

*Second grip. Sorry, haven't slept much today.

Anyway, yes, I use the Japanese style sticks kind of like I was grabbing a cherry. The hand rests over the board, and I mostly just move the phalanx of my fingers around. I will refer to this stupid grip as "clit-picking" from now on.

>find Shoryuken forums thread with someone asking for American feeling sticks

That was your first mistake. Most of the 09ers that make up SRK nowadays worship the Sanwa JLF and suggest modding that particular lever to the point where it no longer handles anything like a JLF, thereby negating the reason why you'd use a JLF in the first place. All that said, though, there's no real shame in using an octogonal gate for your JLF, or even a circular gate, for that matter.

If you want an "American" stick, then you're going to have to look at industrias Lorenzo for the good shit, since Suzo-Happ outsources their shit to the chinks these days, which impacts the actual build quality about as much as you'd expect. Otherwise, if you have a local fightans scene in your neck of the woods, I'd advise going there and trying out some sticks there. Chances are they might be rocking a Seimitsu LS-32 or gookshit like the Myoungshin Fanta or a Crown, or whatever the Tekkenfags usually use.

>>15142006

>I'm not even sure if they sell these mounted in some box already or if I have to DIY, but it's not like it is a deal breaker.

MAS Systems used to make arcade sticks much like how you'd find them in a Western arcade–bulky, and with Happ buttons and levers, back when their shit was IIRC just rebranded iL parts. You're probably going to have to build your own stick if you want something like an old MAS stick.

Here's a video on some arcade stick grips, for the next time you decide to try using something built by the japs or the gooks.

168068 No.15142032

Should also mention, if you're going to buy a premade arcade stick from, say, Hori or whatever, do look into getting a shaft extender, or a larger balltop. Or maybe both. It might solve your hamhands problem. Those shouldn't change the "feel" of the lever too much.

Looks like you'll need to do some woodworking, OP. Buying a used 'MAS' online is always an option, but they've become a pricey collectors item. If you aren't carpentry-savvy, I'd recommend dropping a Seimitsu lever into any fightstick. The LS-32 was a very popular shmup joystick, featuring a shorter engage distance and throw than any Sanwa, you may find it more responsive.

If you do build your own, opt for Industrias Lorenzo (IL) parts. HAPP cut costs and started producing less durable components in the mid-2000s.

When I discovered IL it amazed me that Spain of all places would have a factory for this kind of shit. Is this shit popular in Spain?

2f7743 No.15142107

OP here, was gonna comment on that. Turns out IL is not only from my country, but from my own town and probably just minutes away via car, so guess I am going to support the local industry and buy some IL to build my own arcade pad.

No, Spain doesn't really have that much of an arcade scene. Almost all arcades are dead, save for the spare MAME cabinet here and there (mind you they are very rare) or the typical bowling place with Time Crisis 3,band I find it baffling that my local tabletop store decided to open an arcade section. I am good friends with the owners and apparently they commented some Chinese guys (mind you that zone is the closest you can get to Chinatown in Barcelona) offered to handle the machines themselves if they rented the space for them, so I am going to guess it may be more popular amongst Chinese people, and they are probably miss them machines, judging by how the asian guy mounting the machines was obscenely comboing in SFIV. Not sure if their venture will thrive considering each game is more or less 1 euro and their SF cabinets have Nightmare AI from the get go, so normalfags will probably be intimidated, chances are I will be their only non-Asian customer, and I have no idea how will chinamen react to the idea.

When I play arcade games back when we had Galaga and Turtles in Time at Pizza Hut, I played palm grip because of how tough the sticks were. Course I never got to play any fighters and I can't find any old boards to practice with anymore. I live in the thumb of Texas, which is literally fucking nowhere. No card or comic stores anymore. I have considered some PSP/3DS-like stick to build a more compact, gamepad looking fighting stick, giving how comfortable it seems to use for quarter circless, half circles and even full circles, but building a mechanism like that with home tools seems complicated, and the 3DS one isn't even that good and apparently breaks doing those exact movements, so I guess I would have to build it myself, and it requires some custom rails and an electronics knowledge I do not have. I think it measures the distance away from one of the extremes of the rail depending on how much it resists the pass of electricity through it; simple in theory, but it would take some serious calibration and custom wiring, not to mention the pieces themselves are not that simple to model.

It's more about the grip (probably caused by the ergonomics of the cone tip, but maybe it has to do with the length of the shaft) and the extreme stiffness than about the gate. I was planning on using an octagate if anything, anyway.

Still, I still don't get that thing about effective areas: if you don't grind the joystick against the rail, you don't really care about the gate, and if you do, octagates give you quite the feedback to hit the right spot. The worst you can say about non square gates is that when grinding the stick, directions have unequal travel times, which shouldn't matter at all, and in fact will overall have less travel time when performing partial circle motions

Circle gates are cool if you play grapplers in fighting games.

Some people say square gate is superior for fighting games but these people are typically headband-wearing honorabru samurai that eat fish straight from the lake. If you're looking into buying a stick for fighting games or any type of game just pick what feels comfortable for you.

Personally I don't bother with a stick and use an Xbox 360 controller.

Happ or korean sticks. They're the sturdiest ones.

You can also try to buy the heavy duty versions of sanwa (JLW) or seimitsu (LS-31) sticks.

Also, I've built and kept an arcade machine at a semi-public place where anyone can go and play whatever from 8 AM until 12PM. And yes, people are fucking animals that try to destroy everything, but I've been using sanwa (JLF) sticks for more than 6 years and I only need to replace them every two years.

Pushbuttons have a smaller lifespan (6 months to 1 year).

If you're using them with care and it's just you using them and not a bunch of basketball americans, they'll both last for years.

Your problem with japanese sticks is that you don't know the dimensions needed for your input to register, it's a common problem.

Don't do the Pinch hold, that's the worst way to handle a joystick, your hand slips out easily. If you're using ball tops, do the wine glass (doesn't matter between which finger the shaft is).

If you're using bat-tops, use embed related.
