Dofus had a strong user base for years and years and was wildly popular. Then they started working on Wakfu, all while keeping Dofus alive and thriving. Wakfu spent years and years in beta hell, initially starting strong with a lot of promise, and then eventually fucking everything up. You see, Square Enix was originally supposed to be the publishers for Wakfu outside of Europe. Square Enix did jack shit to promote the game, outside of like, one tiny booth at PAX one year.
So, while they kept fucking up Wakfu, incessantly reinventing, rebalancing, and outright scrapping mechanics that people liked, Dofus kept going at the same pace. Nice and steady, never really pissing off fans or losing a significant amount of users. The updates came out consistently, new dungeons, new maps, new shit at a perfect drip feed. Meanwhile, Wakfu was "released" from beta in a shitty state, with a subscription fee no less, there wasn't much to do, the user-driven politics system was fucked from the get go. The mechanics were initially heavily skewed to the point that build didn't matter as long as you pumped all your points into HP. Every few weeks, they went and rebuilt or completely overhauled a class. Meanwhile, there was still jack shit to do in the game, the user-driven economy was fucked, one or two guilds ran the entire goddamned world. It was just miserable.
Eventually they dropped the sub fee, but kept doing the same shit where they'd overhaul and fuck up the entire game, in between desperately trying to implement features that would entice players to stay.

The game really changed after the official release, and in a lot of ways for the worse. I noticed several maps especially the under ground ones used for mining got stripped of several levels and roaming aggressive enemies were removed. A shame, I liked spelunking in the dark.
