Go for MHFU first. It emulates perfectly, has an ass load of content, you can easily play online with people and you'll get the most basic MH experience without the rough parts of the early releases.
Alternatively Portable 3rd is more beginner friendly, has a fan translation, slight more polish on mechanics and can play online easily.
After those all that's left is MH3U and MH4U then you got the high points of the series all covered.

Honestly, I lost all the interest I had in this game over time. My original intent was to play this with friends when it came out on the PC, but we all lost the will to play it a few weeks after the release on consoles, firstly because the game's not that good, then there was the delay (and I would bet a pretty penny that the reason for the delay was 100% denuvo related), and now this is the final nail in the coffin. Even if they pirate it day 1 and it allows multiplayer with no problem whatsoever I think that I still can't be bothered to try the game
There's only one thing bothering me though, and that is some comments I have seen online on the lines of "ohhh we are seeing a capcom revival with the new megaman and dmc, crapcom is no more!". I hope no one on this board shares that sentiment, because you would have to be utterly retarded to believe that after the last Marvel vs Capcom and Street Fighter V. You may not know this because next to nobody still plays SF5 other than tournement fags, but the other week they added lootboxes to the game, more than 2 years after release. Yeah. I liked MHW for actually being on a console that isn't weebshit handhelds and giving some free DLC though arguably deviljo should have been in from day 1. I beat the entire game, all difficulty ranks, solo which I think is where the game gets a demerit from me. I wanted a challenge and I never got it. As soon as I got marathon runner and draw crit for GS the game became trivial. Also, mounting monsters is OP. I didn't know about the autoevasion cloak as the only one I use is the flight one for added fun.

Started MHFU today, plugged about five/six hours into it. Got to the first big quest, fighting a real Giadome or whatever its called, the bigger, badder raptor. I want to like this game, but this fight pissed me off. Been trying out different weapons but most of them feel very good, very slow and having to commit to an attack that misses is frustrating to say the least. Then there is fighting the camera while I'm trying to fight, dodge, block or escape to heal.
Immediate first impressions were kind of strong, the slightly later first impression makes me think this game is just going to be too much of a pain for me to enjoy.

First pick reminds me the reason reason why I naturally chose Switch Axe and eventually Charge Blade. First my family was vikings. Second I tried longsword in Tri and it was fucking boring. I learned nothing from the monsters I was hunting. And lastly I just fucking love that high risk high adrenaline rush style.
I know great sword has a guard. Charge blade in 4u/X does too. However to truly master charge blade at higher ranks your average DPS comes from the axe drop. Reason for this is because axe drop has be perfectly timed for a super guard. Then you morph round slash to charge up + guard which also has a lesser super guard. If you want to keep up the damage soloing monsters without support while speed running you're going to need to stay close and walk, not roll, away from monster hitboxes and into their blind spots.
When Tri was online, only shitters used Longswords. Real men used daggers and bucklers, and fucking axes. And with switch axe in Tri/3G you're going to need to muster up some autism to learn hitboxes. It's the only way to take down G-rank monsters solo in a reasonable amount of time and not die. Old Switch axe is blindspot abuse.

Brave had potential, like the concept of styles in general did, but got fucked by nu-capcom having no idea how to do anything right if it wasn't copy and pasted from a previous game. Could have been fun if it was balanced properly and not some timer shit in combination with a get out of jail free button. Basically everything short of super deviants and high tier hypers inflict so little damage from brave dodge is practically negligible. It would be so easy to make alchemy a pseudo WR+2 alternative, or god forbid something actually interesting, but instead it's a shitty version of striker since the only marginally useful item it gets that isn't related to HA build-up is disposable earplugs, and it takes so long to generate a single pair of them it's utterly useless trying to make use of it (ignoring the fact that disposable earplugs are already a moot point due to the amount of options you get to deal with roars in XX). Only way to get any value out of alchemy is to use the alchemy boosting skills from the alchemy slickaxe, alchemy speed up juice and alchemy boost from SP to shit out a ton of alchemy whetstones and the occasional wide range HA meter boosting bomb. At least at level IV keeping SP up for your whole team is mildly useful?

Come on 'pretty good' is a gross exaggeration, it's 'acceptable' at best. Bigger issue than monster having an actual huge boost to hp (effectively still a noticable boost when weapon/skill strength is taken into account) is that deviants and hypers break all the rules of the old games and push to make monster hunter more like a spamming, i-frame based game than a positioning and prediction based one. Even regular monsters are more prone to un-fun bullshit than in any of the earlier games, but it doesn't really mean it's more difficult since the hunter has so many options even without styles/ha and min-maxed speedrun strats kill monsters insanely fast in XX, but normal play gets cucked unless you're the kind of person that never liked early gen monster hunter games anyway.

The problem is all the fucking tracking and cancelling monsters can do now. Hypers are much worse than deviants, and some deviants don't do this at all. Thankfully GS is always viable in any game no matter the circumstance, but some of the monsters in XX play like a totally different game to what I expect out of monster hunter game. This was noticeable in gen 4 as well, but really exacerbated in XX.

I don't know your sets so I can't really say anything, and I'm also not really that good at monster hunter end-game stuff anway but a good run for me against hyper tigrex was 8 minutes and a bad, everything going wrong one was about 15, apparently runners get like 3 minutes and standard minmaxers gets like 5. Still, when I was just playing casually in half assed armor 20-30 sounds about right, which is what I prefer doing anyway to badly failing at speedrunning and ai exploitation. Hyper tigrex is probably one of the least offensive hypers though, tigrex is generally a fun monster to fight, even molten tigrex which is probably the most annoying of any tigrex variants is still less painful than the equivalent rare breeds for other monsters.

Styles and arts need to fuck off forever. They were a mistake that cannot be fixed. Prowler mode can stay if it gets re-done to make palico skills useful with decent damage dealing skills and supports.
Two new weapon classes, one blademaster and one gunner at most is what I would say would be enough. The physics changes as to how monsters interact with players and how armor weight affects that will be extra variables to consider.
Thought about blademaster weapon as a Double Spear, a stand alone haft weapon with a guard you can split in two. When split the spears are tied with a chain. Which you can throw the "javelin head" to tether onto monsters. Then use the rope to swing around, pull yourself, and mount. Gunner weapon is a Sling Shell that throws "concussive bullets" dealing impact damage instead of shot damage. The shell case has to be manually loaded before throwing each bullet. You can use the shell case like a ball and chain for minimal impact damage. Winding up throws take stamina. And if a loaded shell case hits a monster the bullet blows in your face and you take extra damage. Bullets use coatings like bow but coatings are applied automatically when you load a bullet.

Insect Glaive is probably the only style I say Aerial works with, only because the forward lunge is more useful than not. Plus you still retain 90% of your Guild style moves. That said Guild style, Swarm, and Extract Hunter is the ideal way to play IG in X if you want faster kill time. And I hate to say it but anything higher than 20 minutes at most is shitter's time.
