The MGSV Chapter 3 debacle, Skullgirls never delivering on its Canon Story Mode because the characters required didn't win the DLC polls, that sort of thing. What other kinds of games out there have you played that ended up promising things that didn't pan out, /v/? I find it interesting to learn why devs end up dropping things.

Crimson Gem Saga is kind of my go-to for such. The game ends with so fucking many questions left unanswered, and on a rather downer note at that. A few at least have their answers in a prior game that wasn't especially well received or well translated (Astonishia Story), but with the rest it seemed like the devs were deadset on a sequel to be able to wrap it up. And I'm not talking "loose ends", I mean the entire fucking conclusion feels more like a halfway point despite the player being max level or close to it by the end, and without the intentional "episodic" episodic excuse something like .hack would use. To this day, it never got a sequel, and left a bad experience with KRPGs in my mouth. Not good when a game winds up ending as a massive Frodo moment and makes the player wonder why they bothered putting however many hours into it for that sort of pay off. Good character art and spriting though.

Gravity Rush might also count, albeit more minority. First game ends with more questions asked than answered, and while apparently development on GR2 started shortly after the first game was finished, it still took about four and a half years for the sequel to get out, and with the way Sony had been handling the Vita, at least out here, it wouldn't shock me if a number of fans lost hope along the way. Not sure if SCEJ intentionally had Japan Studio leave things hanging with the first as sequel bait, or if Vita cartridge size limitations might have been more to blame (4GB seems the default, but I hear larger sized carts exist; would have to double check file sizes). Both games are good at least, though. Can't say the same for CGS up there (which I was honestly liking it until it shat the bed so hard in Act IV that it soils the entire experience).

Wind Waker is basically half a game stretched out, if it had gotten another year or so of development it might've actually been good.

Didn't know Hyrule was going to be an actual second overworld, that sounds amazing. Could you imagine if there were still people living there or stuck in time, so that Ganondorf had more weight to his motivation? Or if you had to choose whether to save the old Hyrule or the new one? I remember an interview with someone that worked on it mentioning they ended up scrapping the planned out dungeons for future Zelda games (Twilight Princess' water temple was the one in question iirc).

Ahad had an initial roster of characters that he had planned to do when he designed the game, and they were going to do the last two characters to give it a canon story (Umbrella and Marie), but Kike Z decided at the last minute he wanted to put the last two characters to a character ballot instead, and the winners ended up being some gay wrestler and an egyptian thot who fights by making stuff out of her period blood.

There over 33 characters planned in total and the main characters that would've revealed the main plot were black dahlia, marie, and umbrella. There were only five characters that could've been funded as a result of their indiegogo campaign meeting more then three times the demand that was initially requested.

As covered by others in the thread, Skullgirls happened to lose its funding after the vanilla game went gold and had to rely on crowdfunding to finish the characters they were planning to add later. The developers went on record saying that three characters (Black Dahlia, Marie, and Umbrella) were required for the canon story mode to be made. Unfrotunately, they decided that instead of making these three immediately, they'd put who got in to a vote. What we got out of it were Big Band (who admittedly was kind of cool), Eliza (a character voted in for her unique gameplay mechanic WHICH THEY SCRAPPED MIDWAY IN and Beowulf (an otherwise unremarkable wrestler if it weren't for the fact he fought using a giant's dismembered arm).

If I recall in an old thread, supposedly the voting process was also tainted by one guy on the team saying that Beowulf (an otherwise unremarkable wrestler) was behind the Top 4 in terms of votes, which prompted anti-waifufags who didn't want a character such as Annie or Minette to bandwagon behind him for the sole purpose of spiting the waifufags.

The original game is just half a game, you play first half as Nero then you play the game backwards as Dante. The special edition re-release added a Trish, Mary and Vergil to play as, and some new modes, but left the original campaign untouched, so you'll play the same stages a total of 6 times, if you want to play and finish all the characters.

You seem to think it would be an easy process to "just add" these colossi and think they wouldn't alter the game and its pacing in dramatic ways, adding more content but not having it be anything meaningful. I've never seen a good argument why SotC remake "needed" the cut Colossi added. I think the best thing that could be asked is an in-game gallery/museum showing off all the cut content sort of like how the earlier Ratchet and Clank games did. The cut colossi are interesting, especially those cut near the end - but these colossi are incomplete and failure to understand why the game had them cut at all to me is basically exclaiming you totally missed the point of the game.

A large chunk of story mode in GTA V was cut. Unused files as well as more files from a prototype of the game show a whole cut heist (The Sharmoota Job) as well as a series of other missions (a bunch of hood missions, a mission where you steal a Hydra like in SA and the online heists, etc.). This explains some oddities like the aforementioned hood section being so short - the original story had it longer and the transition with Franklin moving from the ghetto to his fancy house was smoother rather than abrupt. Mind you, I still believe the game would've been as bad as it is now if it still had the same physics, driving, gunplay, car choices (few "normal" cars to fill the regular traffic, mostly luxury and sport cars that you don't see normally in the game) et al but the whole thing could've been different.

Cutting content isn't always a bad thing. A games pacing can drag a game out to be way way longer than it needs to be and then you burn out and have to slog through it to finish it up. SOTC is just long enough before it starts to get repetitive. If you added that many more bosses you would need to add at least 2 more mechanics and if you go 48 then you need to add at least 5. The basic gameplay just isn't enough to sustain that much content, it doesn't have the depth for it.
