I want to explore some interesting MMO world. I remembered how I used to explore WoW on my localhost server. It was super comfy. What are some of the other MMOs out there that are interesting to explore?
Some simple rules.
It is either free or pirateable, not too keen on paying subscribtion or full price for a shitty mmo.
Im not interested in mechanics, combat, P2W or community. It can play like an absolute ass and be devoid of people as long as I can explore things. Same with old games, I dont care about the age of the game.

LOTRO is comfy as fuck and has great exploration music and sounds/atmosphere. I used to travel through the blue mountains and the vale of Thrain just for the ambience and wildlife sounds

FFXI has tons of cool places to explore but navigation is a pain in the ass. No jumping, swimming, or climing of any kind and most zones are designed like intricate spider webs.

OP I'd have to agree with LOTRO or FFXI. IF you choose FFXI go to Nasomi. I don't play often but I'm thinking of playing more and can help some. LOTRO is fucking comfy and I loved my first time traveling through the Shire and listening to some players doing instrumentals.

I rode and walked all over Eriador plus Rohan and some other places without ever spending monies. All the starting places are nice and even ones where you need a higher lvl like Forochel (which is great to explore btw) can be visited with a little caution. I used to mine in Forochel while being severely underleveled.

I would say Emil chronicles online since there are many maps to go to that comes with a pretty good soundtrack. Nothing is instanced as far as I know and with how dead the private server is, it makes for lonely travels.

i like it a lot too, its definitely better than XIV which is a single player MMO for the most part. However i think im done with it. other than occasionally logging on era, whenever i attempt to find a group everyone quits in like a week and i end up having to either play alone or succ up to existing LSs.

It's definitely not good combat. It's mostly point and click mmo with somewhat spamable skills like Ragnarok online. The devs are pretty much laidback seeing there is little to no updates on the private server and how a bunch of the class skills are not working at all but there is a wide variety of classes and class skills. The pserver is nice if you want some decent character customization for the hair and eyes mostly but that's about it.

i mean just look at the video. its as generic as it can get. its one of those games that were designed in the 00's to squeeze people out of money for gear upgrades. before the genre evolved into gachashit.
they follow the same mechanics too, its basically gambling. except that in the 00's, instead of gambling for good gear/cards/mcguffins you'd gamble on whether your Sword Of Satans Erect Cock +87 uprade was going to succeed and become the Sword of Satans Erect Cock +88, or fail and break the item forever, in which case you'd buy a "don't break the item pls"-item in the cash shop, but you could still fail the RNG and simply get your sword at the same level it was before you spent the materials to try the upgrade. Tons of examples of games like these out there, people make private servers with no p2w but the core games are still poor and unbalanced in most cases, and all of them, every single fucking one of them follow that generic kawaii animeshit aesthetic. every single time. 0 effort cash-ins they were. What kind of interesting world can you expect out of that?

The game is old, and the maps are all separated, but they're masterfully crafted. The whole game's leveling system is designed around exploration and dungeon diving, there are virtually no quests or instances to guide you around, you just travel from city to city looking for good places to level your specific class/build/party.
The game is old and aged like milk used as lube. It relies heavily on party making and painfully slow grind only sugarcoated by the social aspect of the game, so you're probably better off looking for a nice mid rate, about 30x or 50x EXP and exploring shit blindly preferrably along with a friend or two. Make sure you don't get a "renewal server", though, thats when they fucked up the game and added lots of anti-fun EXP penalties, shity mob distribution, unbalanced 3rd classes and handholdy quests and instances in a desperate attempt to fix the game's bad aging.

I haven't seen any item upgrading system from the small time I've played the private server but there have been p2w items from having looked at jp gachas like the cat boosters for example. You can either buy one from player shops at stupid high prices, roll a gacha for it or hunt boss monsters for a really low drop rate. It's an equip that lets you use a skill to increase your movement speed or used up as a permanent upgrade to your airship in which you also have to take ages to find the airship parts or buy them for high prices. If it's not weapon upgrades then it's different elements of the games to cash in on impatient people. If there's any noteworthy maps I would say the Light tower and the underground hell maps if you want to explore some areas in the style of ragnarok online maps but for all that's worth, I'd recommend to just listen to the soundtrack.

private servers can make the p2w become custom content, they can turn p2w items into drops or even create their own premium currency that you can get in-game, by playing the game. But that doesn't alter the core philosophy of the game, which is generic anime korean grinder with little customization.

I really hate how the mmorpg genre turned out after all. There were some genuine good games back when it was still an experimental genre. The idea of playing a game with tons of others players exploring, fighting, figuring out where to go and what to buy together and generally having a good time as a group was appealing. I missed out on some popular p2p mmos that didn't had the cash shop garbage but it's that genre that never gets better as time goes on. Since it's dead simple to look up a guide and how modern mmos are tailored for people who can't even think for more than two seconds to figure out what to do while encouraging them to spend even more money, It will never be the same as before when a good deal of people were curious about the mmorpg genre.

Nasomi is pretty stringent about preventing rmt and cheating, to the extent of focusing on that instead fixing bugs. He also tends to break things when updating the codebase. End game linkshells and veteran players definitely use plugins and datswap/wireframe to cheat but it is basically undetectable. Hackers are regularly banned though.

I beat the dragon and got the key item after that. Go to the npc and try to hand him the item to finish the quest, and the bastard gives me the adventurer certificate and basically restarts the quest. It's fucked up.

well yeah, i'd say exploration wise, right now PG is your best bet.
its not a great game, and its buy 2 play, but i believe it has that thing you're looking for where you can explore the world, talk to people, maybe even do a little roleplay that isn't E-roleplay, and you have tons of NPCs to talk to and improve your relationship with, because all skills in this game are taught by NPC masters/trainers who you have to pay for said training and become friends with through helping them/giving them gifts.
Most importantly, no handholding. It has no markers. Not in the bethesda/wow sense at least. And thats what makes it better than other generic grinder MMOs with hotkey combat.
