What ever happened to game communities?
I'm not talking about it in the sense of the games themselves changing for the worse, I'm talking about player communities that changed for the worse that had nothing to do with the game itself.
I remember the days when people made servers just to have run with random people online but now, it's either people making servers to fuel their god complexes or made to milk people out of their money.
I mean look at garry's mod as an example of it, it used to be great with a huge range of game modes, with a chill player base but now, it's all rp servers with autistic no fun allowed admins that punish you because you're doing something they don't like but isn't against the rules.

It's dependent on the genre. For RPGs and MMOs, a lot of the time there was mystery and heavy encouragement for jolly cooperation. Now a lot of that has been removed with a general casualisation and party finder/duty finder.
FFXIV sells itself on being a "single player MMO", yet FFXI was unbearable without friends. This is the general market now, people want to solo through everything and if they do want to get help they want that help to be instant and over with as soon as the bit they're struggling on is done.

A lot of the communities died because of the proliferation of the internet. Before the games we all loved and played like UO, AQ, SC, BG, Q2, etc. had tight communities because the "nerds" were the only ones that had access to the internet to have such communities. We were all D&D RP fags.
When WoW came along it was really the nail in the coffin for online communities. It just brought a bunch of "bros" to the community, and the "alpha-nerds" that would boss people around about raiding and shit like that. Gone was the roleplaying and things we used to enjoy.
Back in UO the RPing community was on every shard, and there always seemed to be some player run tavern/museum/etc. that was a safe zone for everyone, and for the most part PKs and all would respect it and chill. Like the Christmas Truce in WWII. You don't see that anymore because everyone is trying to be the latest edgy streamer TROLLOLOLOLOLOLing everyone.

There used to be dozens of different general game sites and then smaller fansites dedicated to one franchise, but now it's just a couple large sites people use. If most of their waking life is doing things with, or for the sake of their family, they don't have time to fuck off and travel to another city just to see what's there, nor the inclination to do so. Blog time: I used to be part of a guild in FFXIV that was pretty solid. Used to do a couple of dungeons during the weekend, and when Stormblood came out we all pitched in to buy a decent guildhall and I even had a little apartment room that I paid for myself.
What sucks is that, after I had to drop the game for about 5 months due to changing jobs and focusing more on work and becoming a functioning member of society, when I logged back in I found that I'd been kicked out of the guild.It's not like I didn't give them a warning. I even gave put a bunch of mats and gear that I wasn't using into the bank so the other members could it.
What sucks is that when I contacted the leader and a couple of the others they wouldn't give me a straight answer about why I was booted, but they did at least spare enough time to tell me that everything I had was gone. My apartment, furniture, the gear I stored away. All gone, and now none of my contributions mattered at all. That actually properly hurt and I haven't touched the game since because that was one community I enjoyed and they stabbed me in the back.

Literally reddit happened. It became the walmart of forums and you know what kind of people walmart attracts. Back before reddit you had a good number of people going to dedicated game forums forming a dedicated close nit community. Streamers also contributed to killing it due to them being a light-bulb attracting bugs and shit to the point where they have a direct influence. Its almost always for the worse too.
Forming bonds mattered less and less over the years because of games pandering to the individual player rather than the playerbase as a whole. Games like Guild Wars 2 where all the classes plays very similarly to eachother. Everybody can do everything. Dedicated roles and classes are practically gone. Team comps matters less. Thus discouraging players forming any bonds.

The general understanding is that it become too common. Back in those days just seeing another person online was a novelty because the internet and online gaming was new. Since then the concept has been streamlined with matchmaking, instancing, raid finders and the like. You can just click a button, get thrown into a group, play your part while others do theirs, and then never see them again. Back in the old days (of MMOs especially) you had to find a group yourself on the overworld using the chat, then travel to the dungeon, and wait for it to come up, then battle through it together. It would be a good few hours of preparation including the party gathering where your only method was to talk to people but now you can just queue in the finder and look up a wiki for all the information. Tera for example you can play to max level without even talking to someone.
Then again this is just a small part of the problem. There has been a shift in mentality because of the abundancy of information, oversaturation of players, and general decline of average skill. Ranked play has also contributed to this because it takes the good players and separates them from the rest, preventing others from learning. As the other anon has said the use of microtransactions so the longer someone plays the more chances they have to spend money means retaining and coddling players is more important than actually having a good game or even a slight resemblance of a challenge to it that might filter out casuals. Advertising companies are well aware that retards tend to spend more money than intelligent people so it's no surprise that everything be targeted towards them in order to milk money from them.
Right now the only sense of community left is in the obscure and purely social games. Those have the consequence of either being mostly dead or not a game at all though. Then again those social games (vrchat for example) give an opportunity to meet people to play other games with.

Matchmaking was a big blow to communities in gaming. When the industry had their big shift from dedicated servers to matchmaking, it was a big blow to forming communities. Everything about dedicated servers was made to form communities. Particularly how people used the names in server browsers to advertise them. In CS:S and TF2 I would always go to 18+ servers that would immediately ban anyone who was found out to be under 18. Immediately everyone would form a connection based on their mutual hatred of playing with fucking squeakers.
But with matchmaking you get the passing stranger problem. You're just going to play the one game with these people so why fucking bother even plugging in a microphone or typing a message into chat? You might get lucky and bump into them in your next match but that'll be it. It's not like a dedicated server where if you like it, you'll return and see familiar names in the player list.

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Why run a forum and beg for donations when you can make a facebook page or a discuck for free? The thing I miss most of all in online games was all the interesting and weird maps.
One game I use to play called assault cube. It was a generic shooter except for 2 really odd things. It was convenient as fuck to make maps, basically minecraft but more detailed. These maps being very small so you wouldn't even notice downloading them. It also had the weirdest fucking server administrative system I've ever seen. Essentially the server gets to vote who can be admin if the current admin leaves. The admin could kick and change the map.
This meant that people where making really really interesting maps AND very often some random dude would just force the server to play one of them. When this happened everyone would download the map from him if they didn't have it, which also opened some exploits such as modifying a popular map to walk through walls and shit. These maps really where easily the most interesting maps I've ever played out of any game. Some had weird gameplay never seen before. Some where traditional minigames. Some where just fuckhuge, for example a Hogwarts remake. Even fucking gmod didn't hit you with this amount of sheer map variety.
Then the clan faggots ruined it and tried to be more competitive. Suddenly the admin system was removed for a traditional one and with that all the weird maps died. Suddenly all you played where generic competitive shooters, like you'd see in counter-strike. The game slowly died off after that.

Holy shit, I've been experiencing this too. I work as an Uber/Lyft driver, so I come across a decent amount of people each day with a lot of opportunities for one-on-one engagement. Every time I get a customer who actually wants to converse, they'll start the conversation and end up asking me a question, or bring up a talking point to follow up on. I used to always try to answer accurately as possible, complete with nuance. Yet, every time, that stops the conversation stone dead. No acknowledgement of what I said, no "huh…", nothing. After a while I just stopped trying to connect with people, and I've found more success in saying shit like, "yeah, man, I know right?" For some reason, banal lines like that carry the conversation forward. Before I started working Uber/Lyft, I thought the "small talk about the weather" meme was just an exaggerated joke, but half of my conversations are "Boy, this sure is some weather!" followed by me saying, "I know! Tell me about it! Just earlier it was…" or, "tomorrow it's supposed to…" and this sort of thing is received quite well.
Every once in a while, I'll get someone who isn't an NPC as described by that pic. I've been doing this for about 2 years now, but I can somewhat remember the times people weren't NPCs

For me, the killing of multiplayer came because of like you & another anon mentioned: the deadly combination of cashing in on "fun", popularity & the influx of players who grew up playing triple A casualized garbage. I bought a new cheap but serviceable pc for gaming this year and actually reached out to an old friend to play again. we did, but sadly he'd become a LoL tryhard autistic who couldnt have fun figuring shit out anymore. Ending up gaining a cadre of his friends and their little sisters playing with me off & on, eventually i had less and less fun with them & in return i became less fun to play with. I didnt realize it first, but it was because nothing we did was challenging.
