Just play Harvest Moon 64 and then stop there. The idea of a good Harvest Moon series is just a myth. Maybe 64 was just a fluke or something, I don't know, but Marvelous was never able to recapture all the things it did right without inventing a million other fuckups.

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life on PS2 is my top-favorite HM game of all time. It oozed levels of comfy I've yet to find replicated in any other game.

Harvest Moon DS was pretty good too though, despite the bugs it had.

The other DS ones were pretty meh. Island of Happiness and Sunshine islands were both serviceable but nothing special. Grand Bazaar I never bothered with trying, and Tale of Two Towns was also pretty serviceable. On PSP, Hero of Leaf Valley was great. For 3DS; I didn't like Story of Seasons, and while Story of Seasons 2 was much better, but I still didn't care for that one.

Tight pacing with a goal focus. If you aim for that top evaluation and endgame party picture, the game essentially plays out like a strategy game, with you planning your days and the best way to go about it. While it's by no means flawless, just about every other game in the series is more interested in being a lousy simulator than a game, even in spite of innovations that dealt with 64's flaws (inventory management, cryptic as hell mechanics).
