Have any anons ever put in the time, effort, and money to build their own arcade cab? Wanted to make one for a long time. Came across someone else's project that motivated me to commit to building one myself. PC part of it is overkill for mame, but the goal was to support a handful of PC games that work with arcade controls.

Had a lot of fun planning, cutting, and assembling and look forward to building another one in a few months as well as adding things like lights guns to my existing cab eventually.

Neat

Care to post some videos of it in action

why? when I can just emulate it on my pc and play with a controller or arcade stick for fighters.

Fucking hipsters.

What a nice build, OP. I don't have the space or skills to keep a full cabinet, so I've taken to putting together arcade sticks instead; Most Japanese parts are idiot proof.

Looks comfy.

Do the leds have that "adaptative color" tech or are they static?

f3cf1a No.15063126

For fun and because I (have) wanted to. Not quite apples and oranges, but there's a difference between using a controller or a fightstick that sits in your lap compared to standing in front of a control panel to play. Getting to grow up in the 80s and 90s makes me miss arcades. Nearest ones are more than 3 hours away.

I can try to get a video or two when I get home later.

Dude it's just 1 inch(half inch?) wood cut to shape, and holes for the buttons, materials not hard to work with.

f3cf1a No.15063215

>>15063048

Just your standard 5050 smd rgbw strips plugged into pins on the motherboard. There are some serviceable controls provided by Gigabyte for messing with the LEDs (static, pulse, audio, chroma, PC status), but I think its aimed more at the lights on the mobo itself with LED strips just being a small afterthought/consequence.

055d66 No.15063224

Couldn't you have run this off of something smaller and cheaper? I've never emulated a 3D arcade game before, how intensive do they get?

b681e0 No.15063252

>>15062726

I'm not crazy about the lights but the graph background is stylish. A little more consideration could be given to player 3 and 4's necks lol

>>15063189

>This thing needs way more room to breathe, or liquid cooling the gpu at least

Nah, it has plenty of breathing room along with a 200mm fan in the back though, right now it's just a large hole until I mount and wire up the fan. Water cooling would be very excessive, to be honest, and needlessly increase the cost.

Also, 3/4" MDF is what I used. It wasn't hard so much as it took a lot of time planning and designing. Measuring, cutting, and assembly was pretty quick: about 2 weeks of working on it during evenings after work and on weekends provided good weather (had to do most of the cutting outside).

It's nice shit anon. I've wanted to do the same for awhile. Also why stop at mame and normal pc games? Should get some of those cracked jap arcade games off /1cc/ that're modified to run on PC. Also other shit like a CPS2, sega model 2 and 3 emulators, etc. Go all out.

Yeah. That was something I didn't realize until I had actually built the control panel and had it all finally assembled. It's definitely one thing I'll correct when I make another. As far as the LEDs, what's installed currently are RGBW strips. Originally, I had RGB strips (see pic) that I replaced with the former thinking i would get better effects from the controller on the mobo (largely was the same). I could change back to RGB strips, but I would need to build a new harness for them. Took about a day just to make the RGBW harness.

I really do like the background and the lights are what actually brings that out so on second thought they're okay with me.

>>15063311

Mame already supports those. Maybe not 100% perfectly or accurately, but adequate enough. What would be nice is Naomi support. I know there's Demul, and I've looked into it a little, but don't feel like bothering. Just want MvC2 and Soul Calibur 2 I know I could easily set up dolphin and pcsx2 for bothand probably will in the next day or two.**** Arcade version of Soul Calibur 2 had Conquest Mode that I thought was cool when I got to play it.

Thanks. Had a lot of fun for my first time building one. Learned a lot and plan on making another so I can improve my build quality, just need time to get the money for it. Was a little over $2000 for all the materials, hardware, tools I didn't have, mechanical parts, and the PC hardware.

I wanna commission one, but it seems like a fuck ton of work. Additionally I would need a CRT.

almost good, I do have an arcade stick but to go as far to build an arcade cab I would have to think about it deeply.

Custom cabinets are a waste of time, just buy a viewlix.

9f4116 No.15064678

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

Protip: if you are building an arcade cabinet and aren't using a CRT, then you should be using a FreeSync monitor (or GSync if you like giving Nvidia more money), because it allows the screen to match the native oddball refresh rates that various arcade games decided to run at.

You can skip to 1:16 in the embed to see what I mean. Fixes issues with scrolling stutter, improperly flickering images, etc.

>fightstick that sits in your lap compared to standing in front of a control panel to play

Why not just set the fightstick on high table? At worst you would have to put books or some wood underneath it if you can't find one that is tall enough for you.

c32098 No.15064974

How much did it cost to make the table? Not the pc inside tho. I'm thinking of making one that can connect to my tower, or a raspi alternative if I can.

2f0872 No.15064982

>>15064852

Its, honestly, not what I wanted to do. Would have been far cheaper to buy 4 of them, sure, but this is what I wanted. It's kinda like cooking your own meals versus buying something ready-to-go from the store. The former is going to be better for you in the long run, even if it takes time and (potentially) costs more having to buy healty ingredients. All in all, to each their own.

>>15064974

You mean the control panel and box? I think all the mechanical parts and the encoder was about $300. Special t-molding and LEDs was about $200. 2'x4'x3/4" MDF was 12bux per panel (two would be needed), plexiglass was 50 or 60. Inlay print was 45. Hook up wire (24 solid awg) was $20. The .187 female disconnects for all the microswitches was also about 20bux.

As for using a rasberryPI, you could do that, but I understand there are way better alternatives. Plus, why give money to marxist scum?

That's why I said an alternative. They are just the well known name. Thanks for the break down of prices

That's not even true though. You would actually be better off just having a monstrous rig and a large TV where you and your friends can sit/stand how they like with higher performance and easier maintenance.

Its only two. I tried to back them out, but ended up stripping them. They're pretty much stuck in there.

>>15065611

Runs MAME, snes9x, mesen, haven't decided on a Genesis emulator yet, and runs about a dozen PC games through steam. As mentioned above, this is my first time building something, let alone an arcade cab like this. Pinball machines are cool, but I don't have the room for something like that nor the interest. I would imagine its a lot more work in needing to plan out everything, plus all of the time spent wiring and testing. Unless you meant more like a pinball emulator, but I don't know anything about that.

>>15065407

Oops. :^) I saw that only after I had it all together. Don't feel like spending another $45 to print a new one.

As promised, here's a short video of it booting up and getting into a game. It was tricky holding my phone in one hand as I worked the controls with the other.

I can appreciate wanting to have the most comfortable setup for gaming with your buddies, but unless you also dislike standup cabs I can't imagine how you could call someone your friend if they can't be bothered to play a cab you made/procured. Personally I would go one step further and make sure the cab has a proper arcade monitor as well, but that's all hypothetical.

>>15065674

I saw a trick where you can back out a stripped screw by putting a rubber band between the screw and screwdriver, results vary though. Worst case scenario you may be able to drill them out and fill the resulting holes with some toothpicks and glue before retrying. You used a proper sized bit for the screw, didn't you?
