I've only played a few proper VNs, but I tried the Steins 0 VN after watching the first anime. All it did was reaffirm my notion that VNs are a poor format for storytelling. They're slower than books and you don't get the advantage of everything being in your imagination, and they're much stiffer than proper anime. There are scenes in 0 for example which are incredibly unfitting for a VN, such as the garage car scene. Static images just don't work for that kind of thing. And before some idiot starts talking about comics, those have many different panels for a reason and you go through them quickly which allows it to avoid the pitfall of "oh shit action is happening…but I can only see a still image that may or may not fit what's being told in text". VNs are the unfortunate middle ground that neither allows your imagination to work freely or shows things with proper animation. They also tend to have a ton of filler dialogue. The original Steins anime was criticized for this too, though I liked it because the characters felt more alive. The original VN had much more of it from what I hear (and having played 0, I can believe it) and that would just get too much. Some non-plot relevant banter is fun when done right, but too much and it becomes a slog.
Another thing I consider a flaw in VNs is that they usually contain different routes, and you have to play them all to understand the full story or even get the proper ending. This just cheapens the entire thing and makes it tedious as you have to replay repeated or boring parts (the 0 VN is VERY bad about this). You end up just skipping through any scene you already saw. Funny note about that and the 0 VN; it has the "skip already read text" option yet it randomly doesn't work for some scenes that are repeated in more than one route. Rather annoying. And while I'm on the subject of routes
