I guess getting washed up as a voice actor is less likely to happen. Aside from being spared a lot of the pressure from the attention on-screen actors get. There is also the fact that even if you do start to lose it a bit it doesn't necessarily come across as much in a voice-only performances so you can still find work.

Not a whole lot, probably. Voice actors weren't really even a major component of games until the 6th generation and really became a major development investment in the 7th. Before then, most VA's were just whatever assholes they could round up in the office. I think Quest for Glory 4 was the first fully voiced game that I remember which had decent hired VA, but also wasn't an FMV game. At the very least, it had John Rhys-Davies doing the entire narration script and Cam Clarke (Liquid Snake) doing a few voices. Though often times the cast would just fuck around and ad-lib their lines rather than reading the script, and nobody cared because the VA's were funnier just free-forming it than the script was.

Bit hard to be "washed up" when no one really sees the VA visually when playing something, given they only lend a voice, so unless the voice changes a lot, it's not apt to be noticeable if one's not a convention/"DVD extras" fag. Or if they go on some tirade outside of their actual work about whatever. Two sides of the issue: One, in a number of cases, we still don't even know who voiced for what, because at the time either they weren't credited for their work, or went by some pseudonym and don't have a voice recognizable enough to put with a modern name, or just plain didn't do more vidya work (be they good or bad at voicing). I honestly feel kind of bad for Matthew Mercer, considering he seems to have fallen into a niche of "budget Baker" since he can sound very similar but without the big paycheck attached. This; a good example of this happening is with a lot of those Canadian VAs from Ocean Group. The voice actors that played Chris in the original Resident Evil on Playstation 1, Scott McCulloch, died sometime in 2000, I believe. He was from Victoria, BC and was a radio DJ for an English language radio station in Japan in the 1990's. The voice actor for Barry Burton went to his funeral.

And in Lowenthal's case, that is apparently either his Haseo or Sasuke voices that companies request. It honestly felt a bit odd to find him voicing Dean in WA5, because his style for voicing Dean fit the character being a chipper, optimistic dork and possible autist.

Not going to argue that some voices have become drastically overused though, whether it's existing deals with union shit, or just companies wanting recognizable names on their work compared to relative nobodies, at least for major characters.
