Well, Christians did used to burn people at the stake for daring to even translate their Holy Texts into a more common language. Remember that the church in the animated series is portrayed as being around the time of the inquisition - when they were over-run by merchant families and burned anyone at the stake who dared to challenge their legitimacy by spreading the religion to more common tongues and questioning the papcy.

Now, I grant that BnHA has a strong start with the academy intro, something to engage a viewer/reader's curiosity as to Deku's own foregone conclusion ("btw this is the story of how I became the greatest hero of all time"). It starts to unravel with the villains, who were never, ever supposed to be Deku's antagonistic force. None of the villains are set to oppose Deku, but All Might. The trade-off would be fine were it written in a way to be an expy example of the woes Deku could expect in a career of fighting crime, but that's not what we get. They really ARE after All Might. Deku growing is about All Might. Most of the heavy tension in the story is Deku struggling not with the weight of what it takes to be a hero, but instead what he has to do to balance the weight of All Might's legacy. Nothing that's his own. Nothing that flares the challenge of his human situation.
I said FSN did it better earlier and this is what I meant. Saber's story didn't overshadow Shirou's. Whatever other bullshit was going down or took place after (Grand Order, Extra, Extella, etc), FSN remained Shirou's story. Shirou's struggle with what it'd mean to be a hero, and the kind of life he had waiting for him should he persist in being a superhero. The life or death tournament wasn't told because it was important, but told because it was an observation into Shirou's primary and massive conflict. The story was constructed around him. With SJ's BnHA, the story is constructed around All Might, power leveling, and mediocre villains whose sole purpose is to drag page counts to meet those weekly deadlines. The story would have worked better as an anime original, a la Escaflowne/Madoka/etc giving it its own room to grow than as a comic who's narrative is handicapped by wage slavery. Or even VN format (not LN as god knows that would have sealed its fate just as badly). It's a waste.

In fact, the newer texts only made the rules harsher. For instance, first it was adultery that was bad. Then just thinking about adultery became just as bad. Nobody can actually follow all those rules and no one is actually supposed to. They are designed so that there are no unsinful individuals, cause there aren't. We are all literally destinied for hell because God's rules are so complex no one can actually follow them all and you have to. Those who go to heaven will be chosen by God himself via a method no one actually is sure of. Doesn't mean you should just go and do shit just because you got free-will, but you're essentially tained no matter what you do.
