A lot of fantasy used to have science fiction elements in it, back in the day. Mostly that's because fantasy fell within the science fiction section of most libraries before Tolkien came along and popularized the shit out of not!European medieval fantasy. Kind of reminds me how many Final Fantasy games had scifi stuff in them, now that I think about it.

Really worth appreciating some of the creativity of the early final fantasies. I know they're mostly just rehashed tropes, but they're made with such good atmospere/aesthetics that they still manage to feel fresh, even replaying them today.

Games that blend magic and scifi together well are always a breath of fresh air; early FF, Chrono Trigger and Cross, and Saga frontier all do it great.

Not to mention FFXIV, where there is a ton of shit scattered over the continent from the spacefaring Allagan Empire, with matter transporters, automated weapons platforms, artificial intelligence, etc.

Even in among the current nations the Garlean Empire is leaps and bounds ahead of the others, with supersonic aircraft, firearms, mechanized infantry, and more and yet they're losing to japanese rice farmers
