i noticed many of you mix lethal/non-lethal with stealth.
lethal non lethal is as important as stealth/non-stealth which is whole another big topic, but its difficult to talk about just one ignoring the other, because they're so interconnected.
so we have 4 options here
>lethal stealth
>non-lethal stealth
>lethal non-stealth
>non-lethal non-stealth
or is it?
If you played original deus ex, and deus ex hr. you know something feels off. Both games give you all 4 options, but something still feels off, feels off with dx hr.
what is it?
first of, exp stuff, in dx you explored to gain advantage, in hr you explore to gain exp.
For example, deus ex scenairo: you have to infiltrate the place, you see vent on the wall outside the building, you open it and go in, continue with your mission.
how the same scenario would play in hr: you see vent on the wall, you go in, you get exp for finding not front door path. but you know its not the only way inside, so you backtrack, go by fire staircase on the opposite building to the roof, you jump across and enter the mission place through the roof, another exp.
Now, was it logical? no, why would you go out if you already found your way in. exp doesnt exist in real life. It's the draconian design of hr.
And its visible in other areas of the game. takedowns for example.
so what if you can kill, when it makes a lot of noise and gives less exp. which is the most important actually. the amount of exp sets gameplay for the whole game. you cannot adapt to the situation like in original deus ex. i mean, you can, but you will be punished for it by ultimately be weaker later in game.good game hr, but bad design.
so you see there is more than just lethal/non and stealth/non.
theres immersion or lack of
ultimately you have it like this, I just put games that highlight the aspect, its obvious to me that deus ex is as lethal stealth as its lethal non stealth and few others. same with hr, vtmb, styx and others.
>immersive lethal stealth
<Deus ex
>non-immersive lethal stealth
<Styx, mark of the ninja, hitman
>immersive non-lethal stealth
<Thief
>non-immersive non-lethal stealth
<Batman arkham asylum, splinter cell, hr
>immersive lethal non-stealth
<arx fatalis, ultima underworld, system shock 2, morrowind
>non-immersive lethal non-stealth
<vtmb, rtcw, rune classic, soldier of fortune, carmageddon 2000
>immersive non-lethal non-stealth
<???
>non-immersive non-lethal non-stealth
<colobot
