I'm trying to get into RTS games, but can't play them for shit, especially when using hotkeys. I've just realized I type like a disabled person even though I've been using a keyboard for years.

How do you git gud at this genre? Do I need to learn how to use my pinky and shit?

5f2492 No.14884719

if you can't get up to, like 60 actions per minute or something, then don't even bother playing competitively

How do I even count my actions in a minute?

You'll never enjoy real gookclick games, instead pick slower paced RTS that don't demand high APM from the player. C&C Generals would be what I'd recommend you start with.

>Do I need to learn how to use my pinky and shit?

Are there any RTS that actually punish you for clicking like a robot? Maybe confusing the units or having cancelling a build cost extra or something, I don't know.

APM is any keyboard or mouse press divided by a minute. It is good measurement because it actually has nothing to do with dexterity. You will learn how to play and you will make more and more stuff faster, especially controlling your units.

General rule is to improve it is to suck at the game. You will improve it over time by trying to play, this includes micro and other stuff. Point is for you to try and get it better each time.

At the same time learn first. Make sure you have proper strategy and that you are making proper management for your economy. You can actually fucking ignore any form of micro 95% of times if you macro well enough and create proper units.

>clicking like a robot

never understood this

every command given have a purpose, what's robotic in that? every player can have very distinct way of control and playstyle because of that control difficulty in RTS

it's the most "human" genre in terms of mechanics besides FPS

Watch old Day9 dailies that give tips and shit

Also play campaigns

Unless your name is DESTINY and you watch child porn, don't even bother

>gookclick

I assume you're talking about Starcraft 2 and such? I'm playing Red Alert 2 for what it's worth, but it still feels very clunky and sluggish trying to control the camera/move units/build without taking advantage of the hotkeys, and there's quite a few of them.

87c1fe No.14885050

Anon hotkeys are simple

Remember things like "move to attack" different formations, hotkey specific things like "the group you're going to attack the base with from behind" or "my barracks" etc. Hotkeys are there to make you save time moving the screen physically back to where you want while in the heat of the action.

Infact once you start using hotkeys you find having to move the screen every time you wanna do something as really clumsy and stop doing it.

511821 No.14885055

>>14884702

Normal RTS games don't tend to require the use of hotkeys to beat normal difficulty. You only really need it in competitive multiplayer and competitive multiplayer is cancer.

You just need to know where they key ares and memorize the hotkeys.

For example, dawn of war, i play with the imperial guard alot, when i click in the command center at the very beginning i alway type "G G E" and i know that will get me 2 guardsmen squads and an engineseer, when choosing the builder, i know "L" means listening post, "I" infantry command and "T" tactica control.

708f09 No.14885212

>>14885116

It's on my list, as well as Starcraft, Warcraft, Dawn of War, etc, etc. I'm still not sure how these games stack up to one another, though. I just had an itch for these kinds of games for whatever reason.

>>14885140

Right, mnemonics. The problem is that I still look at the keyboard even when I type. It's not a problem when I play an FPS, but some hotkeys span the whole keyboard.
