Apparently it downloaded an update behind my back and primed it to prompt installing when I started a game. Too late. I'm not that worried since the hardware is fundamently broken and likely to be addresses, but still, that was plain evil.

The PS4 wasn't subsidized, even at launch it was profitable, considering the Xbone launched at a similar price I doubt it was subsidized either.
Hardware manufacturers don't need to subsidize their consoles anymore due to the rate at which hardware has been dropping in price vs how long a generation lasts. generally 5-6 years
The specs of the PS4/Xbone launched with specs equivalent to 2006 PCs.
That sort of hardware didn't cost $400-500 a unit in 2013 when they launched the PS4. It certainly didn't cost them $400 a few years later with marginally better specs.
