What's your primary reason to play games?
I play to escape reality. Real life is dull, pointless and full of suffering. Real people are petty, boring and self centered. I've never wanted to be part of society, I want to hide away from the world and escape into better ones in video games. Sure, games are fun and I enjoy them as entertainment but if they didn't make me forget real life I'd play them a lot less. My favourite games are Fallout New Vegas, Metal Gear Solid 3, Dragons Dogma and Shinobido 2. I poured hundreds of hours into each of them because they're exactly the kind of life I wish I could live but can't.

I play, not to escape reality but because video games make a nice complement to it. Just like watching a really good television series or going through an excellent novel, playing a good video game is just a nice thing to do. Especially because you can involve others and you can actively do a fun thing together that's more than passively watching a show/movie, is easier/cheaper than going out for drinks, and is sometimes just outright better than those things in general.
Anything that is done for escapism, isn't good. That's the symptom of a much deeper, more insidious disease, and I hope that whatever's wrong in your life sees resolution soon, OP.

Mainly escapism these days, but it became a substitute to human contact in my teenage years, I let real relationships wither away in favour of talking to people online. I don't really have as much fun as I used to though. But that's probably because of all the days I've spent on games pretty much 24/7. Because I love video games. I used to be one of those "games are art" fags until I realized I don't want anything more than an engaging game. If a game uses a compelling story, interesting characters and striking artstyle to achieve that then great. There's nothing I'd rather do than play something that actually had talent and effort put into it and that, as a result, is the kind of game that keeps you hooked for days on end.
And also playing vidya keeps me sane. Dealing with people is exhausting and a few hours of vidya after interacting with the most normal of normalfags is probably the only thing that's stopping me from falling further into depression.

Do your best to find another job. I just spent a month away from work on unpaid leave because people could see how dead I was. I still feel horrible, so even a long time away from that shithole didn't help. It's too late for me, but if you still enjoy things, then a change of employment may help to turn things around for you. Well I've always played them, ever since I was four or five years old, now I'm 23. At one point I began to wonder if I even was still having fun with videogames, or if I was just playing them to fill some sort of void. I still haven't settled on an answer, mostly because I do have a lot of fun playing them. The US has it kind of bad in these regards, but the UK/Australia are leagues worse-off. I just wanted things to be sexy and brutal and fun again. Now everything's political, now everything's got some sort of contrivance or bullshit reason for censorships. Games are fucking rad and I love having a good challenge when good gameplay mechanics are involved. Vidya can also have amazing atmosphere that drifts me off to another place entirely, and it's really fun to have those kinds of experiences. I love the real world; I wouldn't want to ditch it for another one. One thing I'm trying to do is become a better human being so I can do some rad shit in life instead of just wasting away as nothing; I feel great when I pull off something cool in vidya but it's not my main source of accomplishment. My main source of accomplishment is, well, accomplishing things. I'm sure that's not on day one, it's probably only to cpm earners, and it'll either be broken into many months, or only given after a year or two of work, but they're literally paying you beyond wages just to hire you. last I checked, CRST leases-to-own their old trucks to anyone looking to become owner-op, and they split the shipment pay 30/70, 70 to you. if you team up with rookies to train them, you only need to pay them their cpm on half of the miles you drive. since it's team driving, you can do those 2-day deliveries across the country for shit like Amazon prime and gross something like $2000 for it. That was two years ago, so things might have changed protip to anyone looking to become owner-op: keep like $5000+ in a checking account with debit card in case something goes wrong with the truck. These are trucks with over 150k miles on them if you get them from CRST

Incidentally, what does being a cargo pilot pay? For trucking, it's all sorts of different shit, depending on what kind of trucker you are. If you're local, or drive for UPS, FedEx, or similar, you get paid per hour. UPS is so good to their truckers, they have a years-long waiting list for those positions, so their warehouses are full of guys with their CDLs who also have a forklift license until the day they get put into a truck. I hear walmart drivers also get it good, so good there's so little turn over that they rarely hire If you drive over-the-road (OTR) and only ever come home every 4 weeks for 4 days at a time, you get paid in cents per mile (CPM) which can range anywhere from 30 for rookies, to 50+ for seasoned truckers who stayed with their company for that long to be getting 50 cpm. Because of Hours of Service, that translates to about 500+ miles a day, 7 days a week, if everything goes right (meaning you aren't stuck in a part of the country where there's no freight leaving. that happened to me once in Fife, Washing. stranded without freight, therefore no pay, for 4 days. they don't pay for you to eat, either). If you own your own truck, you pay for your own fuel and maintenance, but you either get paid a cut of what the shipper is paying, or you get a fuck ton of cpm. One guy I spoke to was getting 91 cpm. If he was clocking in 500 miles a day, that's over $400 a day, and if that's all 7 days, that's well over $2800 a week, maybe even $3000. In 52 weeks, that's well over $160k. You can actually gross 6 figures with as little as a highschool diploma and the tuition for trucking school + lease/finance payments for a truck, and maybe a trailer if the company you haul for doesn't do drop and hook (where you don't load and unload trailers, you bring in an empty, leave it to be loaded, take a loaded one, then deliver to receiver, drop the loaded and take an empty). You also need to pay for your own authorities/insurances/permits, but that's only a few thousand every few years.
I ask because air travel is safer than road travel, and I want to see if cargo pilot is better than trucking when you balance risk vs. pay.

Risk vs. Pay? Try responsibility vs. Pay. You fuck up, you get people killed if not you and your pilot(s) on board. Shit is no joke, but simultaneously the most enjoyable job I've ever had. It's a high cost starting up, about 35k to acquire the flight hours unless you piggy back off a rich guy's flight time (it's all about a logged time in flight hours, and a couple licenses). I recommend it if you're willing to cry, sweat, and bleed Avgas and ailerons, and can support yourself on the lifestyle in the earliest years. My friend has been cooking his logbook so he's already "flown" 550 hours, which is the time frame where every operator and their mom wants your dick in their ass.
Sign on bonuses range from 17k (which is laughed out of the room when it's mentioned) to 45k. Starting pay, as a cargo pilot, ranges from 36k to about 120k starting, with pay raises all over the place. Pilots are worth their weight in diamonds right now, since anyone that gives a fuck about our girls are either too old to legally operate aircraft commercially, or too poor. There are scholarships and such to get some money for the career but it's hard work starting up.
Everyone my age doesn't give a fuck and instead wastes their time going to a 4 year for something weird or living like OP by crying about how lazy they are, so there's a massive shortage right where it counts: when the pay is good and the flying is easy. The people are some of the best I've met in my life, but don't take their instruction. They're shitty instructors and can't teach an ass to sit on a chair.

I noticed that I really enjoy fighting games, and have always been interested in martial arts. I always sidelined it because I thought I'd never make money doing it. I spent a long portion of my life chasing jobs that I thought would be low effort and make me happy because I didn't have to work as hard. (art and design)
I didn't enjoy actually doing those things, I liked the idea of those things. This is very important because you have to like what you DO. So I picked up boxing and now I fight people all the time and I love it. I train almost everyday and I'm always getting better. It feels fucking fantastic to the point that playing games now feels like time wasted that I could have spent grinding in real life.
TLDR: Find what you like to do and do it instead of simulating it.

It is partly why i enjoy Atlus games a good deal specifically SMT and Persona.
Granted i have some gripes with each release but u do test myself enough in them to get a challenge.
A gripe example is how in smt 4 once you get to tokyo a lot of the struggle vanishes. The hardest part of the game is the first part. After that its just a damage race and hope you dont get fucked by an ambush and press turn rape.
But i never lack fun playing them nor do i recieve a subpar story. The storys always top notch and with Persona the substories rarely leave something to be desired.
Plus Dragons crown gives great waifus and gameplay for fun
