DON'T FORGET TO SUPPORT THE GAMES, BUT DON'T FALL FOR THE NISA BULLSHIT
>Latest News
- After an email campaign, a retranslation, apologies, and 7 months of delays, Ys 8 finally got released on PC. And NISA fucked up, the port is so terrible that only 43% of the Steam reviews being positive (it was originally at 25%, but shills will shill). Western and Japanese websites are reporting this story. In other words, a huge backlash. Meanwhile, NISA promised to fix everything. Don't worry, they'll probably be able to fix in a few weeks what they couldn't fix in 1.5 years. Absolutely. Ha.
- Trails of Cold Steel I & II is now on PC through Steam and GOG with gameplay enhancements and newly voiced lines of dialogue.
- Ys Seven ported to PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store
- Ys: Memories of Celceta ported to PC by XSEED, coming this summer
- Zwei!! and Zwei II are finally released on PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store
- Tokyo Xanadu released on PS4/PC with an improved translation, but there are a few issues like slangs, memes and random chtulhu lines.
- Also available on PC: the Trails in the Sky trilogy (now with Turbo mode), Xanadu Next, Ys: I & II Chronicles, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin.
- Trails of Cold Steel 4: The End of Saga to release in the fall of 2018 in Japan.
- XSEED's E3 2018's line-up includes a "PC/PS4/PS4 Pro RPG".

Well according to the leaked E3 schedule XSeed is showing a PS4/PC RPG at E3. We obviously don't know what it is, but there's a chance.
Adding to that (sorry >>14818131 but I'm going to bring this up for practical reasons) Hatsuu posts on the Falcom dis-cord and while it certainly doesn't confirm anything, she's been way more cagey lately. For instance, back in December or January I asked her who she would cast for a specific character if she could have anyone she wanted and she answered straight out. A few weeks ago I saw someone else ask her how she would direct someone for a specific scene in CS3 and she said "that's for me to know and you to find out if we get CS3." Her tone seems more playful now too, as opposed to back then when she seemed.. less sure, I guess. It's hard to explain. Just a feeling I got.
Again, this is far from confirmation, but it's given me some hope. I'd like to believe it was the Ys 8 debacle that sealed the deal, but even if that were true it being far along enough to show at E3 would mean the the PC release disaster couldn't have been a factor.

Why would you have the big guy use defense buffs that need to be refreshed almost every turn? His time is much better spent buffing himself and then punching things.
>Power levels are really fucking weird in this game but its pretty clear that Cassius isn't a weak fuck and it wasn't even close, he just likes to ham everyone up and make himself look humble when he can. It wasn't even close.
Powerlevels and the idea that by just being "stronger" than another person you're practically invincible to them are both stupid and horrible storytelling. Joshua's supposed to be a sneaky assassin type, so it can be assumed that he tried to attack from stealth or deceit. Cassius somehow avoided this, probably by using his magical shonen genre six sense to tell that someone was behind him (just like how fucking everyone in CS magically is able to "sense" people in hiding) and then thwacking Joshua half to death. Speaking of shitty storytelling, CS has such a major focus on the military, yet its idea of clever tank warfare is to roll up to a few meters from your opponent with the commander standing defenseless on top of the tank, chat with their commander and then blast away at each other. If they're REALLY fancy the tanks move back and forth to dodge shots while they're being shouted orders at by a person standing on top of the tank and with seemingly no radio equipment; I guess war doesn't make much sound. CS wants to take its drama seriously, yet it does stupid and incredibly childish shit like this and it really hurts it.
Charizard was only pretty when she was young and her decent older look was ruined when she cut her hair. Bleublanc isn't a blazing homo faggot, he's a blazing flamboyant faggot. Olivier is a blazing homo faggot. Bleublanc actually wants that sweet teenager princess pussy.

Yes. I did this often with him, he kicked ass and dealt truckloads of damage.

I'm not going to deny this. I had a lot of problems with Joshua's writing.
Cassius I feel was sort of a special exception when it came to anything power-related. He was sort of on a level of his own and praised as a legend/demigod/deity-in-human-form by literally everyone in every goddamn region. It was sort of hilarious.

I thought he was just another gud boi in SC until the ending and suddenly my interest in him shot up as a character.
He feels way less… sasuke-like than Joshua, though I think I've pointed that out numerous times in the past few threads already.
Maybe its the fact that you have far fewer interactions with him, he gives off very few mary sue traits, and he, on first glance, feels more likable and mature as a character (along with being a lot better at hiding his emotions, compared to Joshua where its like teenager-tier hiding. which is to say it might as well be written on his sleeve).
Walking in on him with him reciting a novel by heart to the orphans was also too sweet of a memory, its like how can you even dislike this guy?

though I will throw Joshua a bone and repeat what I have said before, that his interactions with Hans in FC are, aside from his much much later appearances in SC, his best moments in terms of character writing, which is really friggin' frustrating because of how brief of a period of time it is. I was really liking Joshua as a character, he was acting like a human being, arguably even a bro and then it all just kinda evaporates afterwards and he goes back to his bland mary sue barely concealed edgelord self not long afterwards. Maybe it was because of the fact that he was a teenager that he was acting like such an annoying retard, maybe he's supposed to be outright unlikable but I wish the writers weren't so intent on having his dick sucked by pretty much everyone. He's like a harem protagonist that never quite "earns" it in my opinion.

In a way it is understandable. Teenagers aren't very likable in general, and he is also emotionally scarred, increasing his angst levels. It might also just be a Japan thing where teenage girls are attracted to handsome mysterious edgy boys.

Of course he comes across as charming and likable at first glance, he spent most of his life keeping his emotions away from people, and when you're playing as Estelle, you'd have little reason to suspect he's anything more then that, especially when the game all but tells you when someone like Joshua, Olivier, or Renne are more than meets the eye early when you meet them, having someone you spent an entire game with suddenly murder someone with no warning is somewhat jarring.

I just finished Tokyo Xanadu, and I am wondering what the hell happened to the translation on it. Did one fucker just decide to meme it up and it was a small enough project that it got through? Did the Japanese text include lines about cthulu, "I would have gotten away with it if it weren't for those stupid kids", fucklducks, damn son, and H.E. double tooth picks?
Also, I think that Gorou is fucking retarded from the way he tried to ambush that greed that was a kin of the one from the original earthquake. He had all the time in the world, but he didn't explain what he was doing to the main party who shared a common goal and didn't even bother making a solid ambush. He had a set spawn location, and what did he do? He surrounded it with soldats at close range after making a nice circle formation where stray rounds would hit allies. The soldats give up firing power and defense for mobility. Rufus in cold steel 2 acknowledged that. Mobility should have been the last priority in that situation; the only thing that really would have counted was firepower. To top it all off he even decided that it was a good idea to give the thing a fucking mech. Then, once he completely failed his job, he sent a bunch of high schoolers to clean his mess up. It probably would have been even easier to kill the kin if it wasn't given that mech and a chance to evolve into a giant beast.
I think that the limited items thing they added for harder difficulties should have been implemented differently. You should have been given a chance to select 3-5 items you wanted to bring into the dungeon, and then you should have been limited to those for the entire labyrinth + boss fight instead of the timer. It was way more fun to run the dungeons when I was broke and couldn't afford to just use revive 1s whenever I felt like it. Also, I kind of regret going for s ranks in every labyrinth. I feel like I killed the pacing going for all the boxes and wasting time exploiting ele weaknesses when I didn't need to. The sepith system from trails was also a lot better than the ingredients system they used in xanadu. It was kind of annoying to have every upgrade hard locked behind a specific map, and it was a real hassle to look up both which mats were needed and where they dropped. They should definitely have focused more on quality than quantity for the labyrinths too. Some of the levels felt really good, I'm thinking about the school turned into the misty castle in particular, but I couldn't even remember half of them by the time I reached the epilogue. I would also have liked it if they had made some more levels that took place in the actual world instead of inside a gate. It was a fun enough game, and I'm happy I gave it a try. However, I don't think I am going to be going for new game+.

Then don't put it on one of the slowest people around. A healer makes much better use of it since they're faster and don't have as much to do when the wall prevents most damage they would need to heal anyway. Zin already needs to deal with his own buff which cuts down on the time he can punch shit. Even when you build him purely for offense, he's pretty much the tankiest character in Sky.

Instead he should just be punching shit. There are characters much better suited for using these buffs. Healers in particular already benefit from defense quartz and want to stack speed and are a much better choice. Especially in 3rd thanks to the time gem. Characters like Kevin are shit at attacking on hard and above because if you aren't completely specialized into STR or ATS, you won't be doing shit for damage. Might even get the PS4 versions since turbo speed in turn based RPGs makes me moist, and bonuses with CS III, but I want to try the PC version of the first one at least; CS has gotten so much shit I want to be sure I'll actually like it first. I'm only a casual Kiseki fan, only played TiTS a couple years ago (and am starting the EVO versions because the thought of playing the English versions of TiTS and the Japanese versions of everything else triggers my autism).

I should spoiler my posts more, I would hate to be a newfag in the middle of one of these games and being fucked over by these posts.
>>14837816
The original post was referring to SC and FC, not 3rd where pretty much everyone is viable somehow.
>Healers in particular already benefit from defense quartz and want to stack speed and are a much better choice.
Problem is Kloe is really fucking limited in her quartz slots as it is if you're referring to her, it was sort of awkward to fit in earth wall on her without giving up something else I would usually want on her.
I rarely used Olivier in general.
I used Estelle as an all-purpose character who did a lot of healing because it just kinda stuck out of habit from the beginning of FC.
>Instead he should just be punching shit.
He was doing plenty of that shit, especially with my loadouts for him. iirc I had CP-regen/increasing shit on him in FC and SC, but its kinda hard to remember. An occasional cast of earth wall from him is fine and didn't affect things all that much. I would more often than not require a heal from a healer than an earth wall at any given point in time. Having him cast earth wall and having the healer… heal is what worked best for me in the wake of enemy volleys. I really generally only used it for big shit like arts and crafts that seemed big, and that shit is generally casted slowly enough for even Zin to get it off while I can have all these other characters doing plenty of other useful shit. A healer is decently fast but not as fast as 2 separate people casting, unless I've already sacrificed a quartz slot for them to have that speed in which case, their spell variety is lowered anyways.

Anything involving the Septian is really badass and refreshing, especially with how common of a trope it is for the church to harbor or be baddies. 3rd was, on reflection, a breath of fresh air. (though I will admit to being annoyed at the ratio of dungeon crawling to doors, there should've been more doors like Kloe's freakishly long one in the game, I want that meaty story content).

Aye. The way he did the murder too, so suddenly and without remorse or care, the change in demeanor and everything definitely contributed to that. Shatters the only image you had of the guy.

>I would have liked him more if he had actually stayed a cold asshole
I understand this. He was a badass when he turned cold. The expression and dialogue he uses would send a chill down my spine if I ever had to talk with the dude. It was also kinda gratifying to see someone actually not take shit and get as angry and murderous as he did, considering how nice and easygoing everyone was in the wake of all this horrible shit. Its almost cathartic in a way. The game really needed a… I don't know if I can call him an anti-hero, but he was just a very satisfying character.
However I still personally loved how he redeemed himself. The slow, tragic climb up Gehenna, the confrontation with Weissman, and the (slightly cheesy but idgaf) activation of the other part of his stigma with the Spears of Heaven, combined with Overdosing Heavenly Bliss blasting in the background was too much for me not to love that moment.

>Reverie Corridor feels more like a bonus dungeon to me than a final dungeon to me.
That was one of the problems with TitS 3rd. The entire game feels like one big bonus dungeon where you're just walking around on floating paths in another dimension with a few reused locations scattered around. Reverie Corridor felt like a less drawn out version of the entirety of 3rd, with the main difference being that RC was a bonus to a proper game while 3rd felt like a very padded bonus dungeon and epilogue. It added very little to the story from TitS1/2, and was almost entirely about a character that was mostly irrelevant for all of 2 except for the scene right at the end, and his girlfriend that didn't even exist before 3rd. It's like if Rean became a side character in CS3 and the main character role got taken over by some semi-important NPC.
By the way, please be considerate even when using spoilered text. If you're spoiling something from particularly the games that haven't been translated yet, try to indicate it. There are lots of situations where people talk about one game in spoilers (>>14854828, >>14854929, >>14854980) and then someone

It's worth noting that with Osborne back in power Class VII was done anyway. Sara was more or less forced to leave and Thors itself began changing a lot, to the point where by CS3 it's not even really the same school anymore. You can get a small hint of those changes by talking to a few npcs during the epilogue. I think its more because Xseed has no Japanese offices and isn't a Japanese company. If you'd like I can show you a over a thousand nips shitting on NIS/A for how badly they fucked this port up, along with several asking for Xseed back. NISA is irredeemable cancer, good luck waiting for a serviceable fan-translation and presumably numerous mods and patches purely because they got a hold of a single one of Falcom's games.

Xseed is a subsidiary of Marvelous who are literally headquartered in Toyko. They're also called "Marvelous USA, Inc." and are designed to be Marvelous' US branch.
I somehow doubt it would be that much more difficult for them to go through Marvelous when licensing shit for their localized releases. They just don't want to go through the effort.

Or they don't have the money for it. XSeed acts mostly independently of Marvelous until the parent company wants them to localize something. Games like Trails are done because XSeed wants to do it, not because Marvelous does.
In most cases it's easier and cheaper to pay peanuts to English VA than pay excessive amounts of money to Japanese Jew VA agencies for their audio.

Good point, but if that was the case with all of their releases how is it that other localization outfits have been able to license JP audio without going broke?
You could say that XSeed is smallish but are they really so small they can't afford to license voices for anything at all?
5014fd No.14886280
>>14886042
>Good point, but if that was the case with all of their releases how is it that other localization outfits have been able to license JP audio without going broke?
Other localization outfits are usually bigger or have stronger ties to their Japanese counterparts. NISA has a stronger tie with NIS than XSeed does to Marvelous Japan. They're "Marvelous USA" in name as far as they localize Marvelous products.
SEGA Japan is huge and apparently has ties to actual yakuza. ATLUS is also pretty large and acts independently, but is also owned by SEGA.
One of the reasons Ys VIII was given to NISA and not XSeed was because NISA outbid them (offering more money for localization rights). They have more money from milking their cash cows, and can also fall back on NIS in case of money
This is if XSeed is localizing a Trails game they go independently and talk to Falcom, there's no contract or talks with Marvelous Japan as a middleman.
XSeed themselves have to front the cost of acquiring the localization rights, pay their own workers, pay for VA, as well as pay for any other thing (such as people who port if they would like to port a game to another system). They also have to be careful not to spend too much money otherwise they'll make a loss if the games don't sell well enough to recuperate how much they spent, so cutting out something as expensive as acquiring JP voices reduces the risk. Since Marvelous Japan isn't involved, they don't take any risk either.
AFAIK XSeed is a tiny company, probably consisting of much less people than most other localization outfits. They have to balance their act by quickly localizing and releasing smaller games in between larger ones to keep themselves afloat (which is why you see them announcing a lot of small or quick games or projects such as Sakuna).
Personally speaking this does kind of irritate me when they announce a bunch of stuff. It feels like they're biting off more than they can chew properly, so they take extra long.
Japan is fairly draconian and jewish when it comes to audio rights. To the point where it's a nightmare to acquire licensed music tracks if any are used in the game. Even SEGA has trouble with this when it comes to the Yakuza series (the licensed tracks are usually taken out and replaced with a different music track done by the devs) because it's expensive and a headache to get through the legal issues.
Falcom probably lessens this by having their own band and singers and whatnot (though I assume to keep them in the localization some more money has to be paid), but VAs are a different story. The ones Falcom uses are fairly high-profile.
VAs in Japan are managed by agencies. These agencies promote and advertise them. When a VA has to do work for a game, the agency usually acts as the middle man, doing up the contracts, organizing schedules, etc. These contracts usually don't have anything involving localization within them, possibly so that the agency can, as you can guess, wring money out of localization companies later on by forming new contracts with them.
When Kondo said that it's up to the localization company if they want the dual audio or not, people just think "Oh well XSeed can just ASK Falcom for the Japanese audio", without thinking that XSeed also has to jump through some legal hoops while shelling out cash in order to do so.
I wish they could get dual audio, I honestly do. I wish they could get bigger to afford it (but this is partially their own fault, because they like to localize games that no one buys. eg Akiba's Beat which also had a shitty translation).
But English only is not make/break for me. In any game I'd rather a crappy english VA but good translation and less bugs/performance issues than dual audio but shitty translation and a truckload of technical issues.
They've mostly done right by Trails when it comes to localization. That and Ys are really the only things I want from them, save for a scant few other games I might have an interest in.

How much voice acting is there in CS? I'm guessing significantly more than there was in TitS?

d45b56 No.14897799

There is a lot of voice acting in CS. The dub has a bit more than the jap version, but the dub also has some horrible choices like making Laura incredibly butch when her voice is barely deeper than the other girls' originally. Girls like Alisa have typical anime girl dub voices, meaning they aren't good but they at least weren't stand-out awful. Thankfully I didn't get far enough to have cute girls like Towa or Millium ruined before I got the undub. Millium got Burched, by the way.

There's a difference between a lower voice and butch. It's not as bad as he's saying. And I prefer having more voices since Falcom are extremely cheap with their VA budget and you have to deal with silent Rean and other characters all the time.

Whatever you call it, it's far too deep for her and especially when you consider that her voice is barely deeper than the other girls' voices in the original voice acting. It's obvious that the dubbers saw that she was a stronk woman and gave her a ridiculously deep voice because of that. Doesn't match her character either, because despite what she thinks herself, everything about her looks is clearly feminine.

And that is why it was stupid idea to give he a horribly deep voice in the dub. Have you even heard the jap voice acting? We can agree that they should keep voice acting roughly equivalent for each character between the versions, right? They didn't with Laura, and that's why whatever supposed character building you're attributing to her deep dub voice wasn't even present in the original version.

Another of my great hopes is that none of these announcements contain the word "Falcom".

I'm almost positive they won't, but that doesn't stop people from panicking. This combined with the list of games XSeed provided earlier has the whole community in meltdown.
I really, really just want XSeed to confirm they have it just so this shit can be over. I don't care if it's 2019 or 2020. Just say you have it. That's all I want.

If Falcom is stupid enough to give NISA another title they'll be dead to me. It just sends a message that they don't give a fuck about the west in the slightest so there would be no reason to support them.

I'm almost positive at this point they have it.

Why? Because they say they have surprises? That can mean literally anything. Every fucking time NISA says they have an announcement people come out of the woodwork to claim this and every time they're wrong. I don't see any reason to believe NISA has it, when there's plenty of evidence their Ys VIII fuckup has not gone unnoticed. I mean, there still isn't even a Chinese or Korean release for CS3 yet.

Wasn't their last "surprise" them getting Ys8?
There's plenty of evidence that most Nip devs don't give a shit about the West as long as they can make money off the localization.
What are the odds the NISA release DIDN'T make them money even with the negative reviews? Because those are still purchases.

Nisa's last update for the game was 3 weeks ago, it still crashes at regular intervals.

>Wasn't their last "surprise" them getting Ys8?
No. It was random bullshit. And from what I recall Ys VIII wasn't even teased before. They just announced it. And yes, there's evidence Falcom is pissed. Not tweeting about it, for one, like they have with every other release. NISA reniging on their promise to Falcom which did impact them financially. Also the hilarious point of Kondo at a board meeting weeks before Ys VIII PC came out saying all the Steam reviews of their games were positive, only for Ys VIII to come and tank that.
