It'd be a pretty dumb idea, although looking at sun & moon, that's all game freak has nowadays. Removing gyms, Ultra Beasts, circle jerk group who follow you from every city to tell you how you feel about everything, showing off all the post game stuff in the third city then telling you to fuck off and beat the game before you can do any of it.

Last Pokemon game I enjoyed was DPP. RSE remake was shit, XY was pretty good but had the circlejerk group in full force and prevented me from enjoying it.

XY was carried by the fact that the main character was a cute girl that you could dress up in a lot of clothes, as well as the occasional cool new mon like Hawlucha. The girl in S&M is not even nearly as pretty and/or cute as the ones that came before her, and it doesn't help that the guy is the faggiest male main character yet. The gameplay is still the same old shit where they just make the games slower and slower with each generation. A console one will be even slower because they will want to show off the new (still not very good) graphics. I guess that's why the rumor has the boost thing. Which game came up with that, anyway? I know that a lot of RPGs have started using it lately, and the one that popularized it was the port of Trails of Cold Steel to my knowledge.

Whatever the new Pokemon will be, it'll be disappointing trash. It'll probably hold your hand worse than Sun & Moon and have stupid gimmicks and toddler-tier hallway like routes and fixed camera angles, despite every Pokemon fan in existence having the exact same idea of what a true 3D Pokemon RPG should be. They'll also find some way to make it run at 25fps with dips to 10fps, even though the art style will be simplistic and cartoony. I fully expect them to not even use analog sticks correctly, and bring back the retarded bullshit from XY where the dpad was walking and analog was roller skating but the bike was a separate item.

As awful and retarded as this sounds it would probably be the best selling game in the series because idiots everywhere would call it the Skyrim of Pokemon.

I would rather have it in a Cyberpunk setting. Make the MC an adult and give us a car or a motorcycle. It should also go straight into the adventure and little to no filler stuff. Make the battles even harder but the grind should be shorter in order to reward strategic play. I feel that the aging fanbase of Pokemon would appreciate a game that rewards series veterans and does not treat them like a toddler. They can even do a story where you used to be a Pokemon Champ as a kid but you want one last go at the Competition, especially since big prize money and some other stuff on the line that the devs may want to add. You can even be some government agent that has to win a Pokemon Tournament to prevent a war or something

Could have fun with Pokeyman in the Lone Star state instead. Region is divided into five sections but each section you can do gyms in any order except for first and last regions because one-two gyms each. Also gyms total. And each gym you defeat the next ones level up and get stronger. Also ALL gyms restrict you to 3 v 3 single or triple or 4v4 double matches and no items (gym leaders also can't use items either). And all Elite Four battles use teams of 6 balanced pokes based on a theme with champion's team being the true meta test.

Also your smartphone PokéDex replaces all PC function like swapping pokes in party anytime so long as you have reception and battery life.

Every time I try and get back into Pokemon I end up immensely bored. There just isn't enough there to entertain an adult. If you want a good monster collecting RPG, just play SMT games.

That said I do end up getting roped back into Pokemon since Nintendo knows how to appeal to my nostalgia, so if they hit me with an open-world game set in Kanto where you can actually do shit like fly on your Pokemon when using Fly or surf on them with controls like Zora Link from Majora's Mask, I'll buy the fuck out of it (and probably get bored after 10 hours like every other time).

The only way to make Pokemon interesting again would be to completely reboot it with new Pokemon and drastically revamp the battle system to make it more in-depth, but that's a massive risk when they have 20 years of mascots they can shill.

Yeah, it's the "safe" part that's the worst, since the games are so insanely predictable. SM changed that up a little bit and is probably the best entry since Crystal, but it's still not enough to actually make it fresh again from what I've played.

I think a winning formula would be a full reboot, going back to the core concepts that make Pokemon interesting in the first place: a sense of adventure and traveling far away from home in a new world where you never know what sites you'll see or monsters you'll find next. They need to make the Pokemon themselves have a real gameplay impact outside of battle. Let them follow the protagonist around outside their Pokeballs like in HGSS again, and when using them for navigation, actually let the player control the Pokemon, and make that compelling. Add contests and tournaments for more than just battles; Pokemon foot races, Pokemon flight races, Pokemon swimming races, Pokemon strength competitions, Pokemon telekinesis competitions, etc., and make these all playable from the Pokemon's perspective. Really focus on how Pokemon are integrated into the world and people's lives, beyond just the Pokemon League, but also make the Pokemon League as compelling as possible. Theme gyms around more than just types, have new leagues open up depending on how many Pokemon you've caught, bring back battling champions from previous generations/games, etc.

There's so much potential in the inherent Pokemon concept, but GameFreak seems locked into this formula because they know it makes money. But that's not to say that another formula with the same concept won't also make money, and potentially more of it. It's about time they took some risks, since the payoff could be hugely compelling.

What makes a fun multiplayer RPG/turn based game won't necessarily work for a single-player RPG, so they have to have an inbalanced/mediocre experience for both.

How stats buff and so forth plus the abundance of healing items means the single player experience turns into one-hit-wonders. So you should either change how buffs work (lose the boost after X turns) or provide enemies that you need to boost for. Except they're afraid people would hack and use them online (because a simple "is this Pokemon allowed to be used" check is impossible).

And the multiplayer was only fun during Sun/Moon when you had a lot less Pokemon to use, and the meta shifted a lot. Now it's back to seeing 3 of the same 12 faces on every team. I don't care how the EVs and IVs can be manipulated to have variation, it comes down to a convoluted rock-paper-scissors. TCGs are hardly fair or balanced a lot of the time, but at least the lick element means you could see new faces and tactics. It's not even that hard to make watching Pokemon matches more interesting. Just do a Battle Factory style tournament (everyone gets random Pokemon and can trade with their opponent when they win).

As for the next game itself, I still believe several leaks from X/Y onwards. Some work together:

While GF seems to be very aware of the older fanbase playing Pokemon, (which is most present in the West?) the problem is balancing that by making a game that kids can also enjoy and not get stuck which causes them to get unhappy and give up (which possibly means they won't buy the next installment).
