be05d1 No.14769069

I think cults are really fascinating and I love it whenever a game has cults in it.

Lets talk about Cults and cultists in vidya. Bonus points if the cult itself does not call itself a cult.

A recent example would be the Cthonians in grim dawn who believe that all blood in the world comes from their god and must return to him for humans to achieve paradise. They like to offer up people for sacrifices and will even offer their own blood on a daily basis. There is also notes about a family who after the world went to shit joined the cult for some food and shelter, the husband hated it but the wife liked it in the cult and thought it was better than their previous life. Overtime the wife becomes more and more dedicated to the cult and Eventually decides that her husband and her child will be a lot happier when they are re-united with Cthon. She then arranges for them to be sacrificed, this means that they will be drained of their blood while still alive slowly.

Cults are quite fascinating.

Most cults seem to be doomsday cults, but are there any y'all anons know about that are different? There's got to be more out there than salvation seeking doomsday saying ones.

What would make you believe you saw a cultist in a video game, apart from say a national in unfirom, or an occupational employee in working outfit, or just a plain old citizen?

Does it have to appeal to medieval fashion to convince you guys?

What would make you interested in learning about a cult in a video game?

Asking all these for some light into how to write my video game's story.

I dont think scientology is a doomsday cult but I might be wrong on that one. One of the defining aspects of a cult though is not just believing in a doomsday but the reliance on the group. I dont know what exactly you think of sargon but he did a pretty good video about cults. If you'd rather just read the book he is analysing its called "the wrong way home" by Arthur j deikman.

i liked Glory's companion quest and story alot tbh. it's your typical "nice guy helping kids but is actually a satan worshiping bad guy who wants to fuck the kids" kind of story.

the thing that was really cool was the fact that they incorporated a gameplay element into it. for those unfamiliar with shadowrun; the more implants and artificial limbs a mage gets the less potent/versatile their magic gets. long story short she is a mage but sells her soul to the game's equivalent of satan and has to cut off all her limbs, thus severing her magical abilities and soul completely just so that she stops being evil. she then becomes a terminator tier robot razor pussy

-The cult should refer to itself as a "Brotherhood", or a "Sisterhood" if the members are female.

-Aside from the high-level cultists running the show, they should be mostly disenfranchised youths; people who grew up missing a parent, etc. The cult largely recruits by promising to be the family they've longed for but never had.

-The cult should appear benevolent at a cursory glance, and ostensibly be working toward a noble goal.

-The cult should have the complete and total support of the media, various celebrities, and politicians, all of whom are pawns of the cult.

-The cult should assassinate anyone who tries to leave the cult. (The betrayer "commits suicide", or is framed and arrested for some heinous crime, or is suddenly fired and denied work by every employer, or whatever means fit the cult in the story.)

Actually they're much more interesting than I thought they would be. Not so much in their beliefs or aesthetics, but rather their goal. From the moment you escape and set out to liberate shit, the four cult leaders have one singular goal : Brainwashing your ass. As you complete stuff, you get captured, roped into the cult's selling pitch in different ways, and conveniently released suspiciously close to a major resistance base.

The main leader also regularly talks to you, and never in a hostile manner. You're not his enemy, the whole cult operation is acceptable losses for his true goal - getting you, the main force of the liberation, to become his horseman of the apocalypse. And the main choice at the end determines whether he succeeds or not.

The whole concept is kinda prisoner of the fact you've gotta have bombastic action sequences n'shieet because it's a AAA FPS, but I found it fairly bold for the kind of game it's in.

There's a cult to some god of slaves in Pillars of Eternity, you can even sacrifice a companion to the pool of souls or whatever for stat boosts. For some reason it's impossible to not kill anybody before striking a deal with the leader, they aren't even supposed to be hostile to an average guy (quality rpg right there).

I have always dreamed of a "Cult of the Damned" (rather than full Scourge) campaign where you only have the still-human Kel'Thuzad as a hero unit and must use your "worker unit" acolytes to slowly infiltrate Lordaeron's society. Your arsenal of units would be severely limited - some necromancers perhaps, permanent skeleton warriors and archers, but by the time you get your first abomination, it would be a WOW effect because regular human footmen normally would be something you could only tackle with superior numbers.

1351d8 No.14788958

Also I don't see the point in fighting Cult of C'thon in Grim Dawn, all they do is summon some real big demon, while aetherials infest the whole fucking planet, surely it would be beneficial to leave dealing with demons for when aetherials are done with?

The Monolith faction from Stalker. Brainwashed Stalkers who have kept of their cognitive functions after being hit by a blowout. They now worship the mythical Monolith or Wish Granter which is said to be an alien crystal at the center of the zone. In reality they are being manipulated by a bunch of old and former Soviet scientists whose voices they think to be the Wish Granter's.

And the Order of the Sword from Devil May Cry 4. They worship the ancient demon Sparda who sealed the Demon World from the world of the humans as their saviour. They claim to help the people but in reality they are the ones behind the recent mass appearances of demons in order to collect demonic power and to cause mayhem so they can swoop in as the world's saviours. They also did research into anti-demon technology, created various ordinary weapons which work well against demons but their main achievement was infusing their soldiers with demonic energy to create "angels".

mostly how they treat outsiders, most Christians dont consider every single non christian to be heretics worthy of eternal suffering, meanwhile Scientology will sue anyone "slandering" the church and will actively hunt down people who leave.

There is also the whole Dependence aspect of cults, they want people to depend on the cult emotionally and only the cult. Christianity meanwhile has a lot of people not part of the catholic church that still believe jesus is the son of god. I highly doubt anyone outside of the church of scientology believes Xenu is real.

2d8dc4 No.14789462

>>14788927

Devotion, how hard they try to keep you in, and treatment of non-followers. Most Christians won't really care if you're non-Christian and will still associate with you. Obviously they want you to convert and be saved, but they'll generally leave you be. If they treat you differently it won't be significant. (I'm not Christian, but my family, while still wanting me to be Christian, does not exclude me from any family events, nor do they give me shit for it or insist I'm going to hell.) Denominations that more actively push for conversion or treat outsiders differently are what make them more cult-ish. (Jehovah's Witness, Mormonism, etc)

One of my mom's friends is Mormon and she was invited to their daughter's wedding. Their own son wasn't allowed in one of the ceremonies because you have to be a devoted Mormon to attend. He had to wait with the other non-Mormons like my mother somewhere else or in some other room. (I don't know how Mormon weddings work. I just know there's the main wedding everyone attends and some other shit just for Mormons.) Mormons also have their own Boy Scout troop and forbid strongly discourage their members from being involved in troops outside their church. Same family, the youngest son was in scouts in a troop outside their church and the church was asking them to have him join their troop. The mom told their church she was fine with him being in a different troop with friends from school. Shortly after she was given the "calling" of Boy Scout leader for their troop. (While Mormons are now leaving scouts, the same principle might still apply.)

I don't care what Mormons say. Given this and other stuff I've experienced about Mormonism, even having been forced to attend their church a few times with my grandma who converted a few years back, I can say with certainty it's a cult. No other Christian church I attended with family ever pulled shit like this on their members.

The difference between a cult and a religion is in a cult the guy at the top knows it is all bullshit and in a religion that guy is dead.

Alright then, how would you define the difference? Obviously there must be one that makes some religions legitimate while others can just be discarded as cults, right? There's a difference between, say, Scientology and Mormonism, right? An objective one, not just "one sounds less bullshit to me".

By that logic everything is a cult.

No, at the end of the day a religion can reasonably be seen as coexisting with a nation's culture. A cult is a microcosm that actively wants to separate itself from said culture.
