What are your thoughts on Valkyrie Profile? Are they worth playing, or are they massively flawed, but good looking games like everything else Tri-Ace does? Which version of VP1 is best, PS1 or PSP?

Anatomia never happened.

6639b1 No.14755444

My thoughts are you should fucking play them then try making this thread again when you have something to say.

742c70 No.14755449

>>14755444

Nice trips, but I thought there could be some discussion instead.

782a5b No.14755453

They are good games. Haven't tried the DS game. NTSC-U version of the PS1 game is the best version of the first one.

6d931c No.14755474

>>14755453

What's wrong with the PSP version?

782a5b No.14755484

>>14755474

uses the NTSC-J PS1 version as the base which is missing items and enhancements seen in the NTSC-U PS1 version.

6d931c No.14755492

>>14755484

That's bizarre, I had no idea.

cc13ba No.14755526

I've only played the first one on PS1, but it was a lot of fun. The story is almost the complete opposite of your typical JRPG story. Just a word of warning: the hardest difficulty is actually the easiest difficulty and the easiest is actually the hardest. Keep that in mind if you play it.

5ed042 No.14755541

>>14755441

the PS1 version is better. PSP stretched the sprites IIRC

you'll find the first one to be a series of overly dramatic soap operas voiced by Pokemon VAs. I liked it, but the good ending is a bitch to get without a guide

7d1a03 No.14755575

>>14755526

>the hardest difficulty is actually the easiest difficulty and the easiest is actually the hardest.

Please elaborate, I've been wanting to play it for a while and I'd like to play on the highest difficulty avaiable

Lezard Valeth did nothing wrong.

That said I enjoyed the Valkyrie Profile games, Covenant of the Plume a little less but I didn't play it that much. Those recruitment scene could be very nice, especially Grey's.

>tfw no VP: Hrist and Celia is still not recruited as an Einherjar even though all her friends are dead.

c9aea8 No.14755662

Are there any other games that attempted the first Valkyrie Profiles style of gameplay?

29235f No.14755667

Garbage with gimmicky combat that gets old very quickly. Cardinal gaming sin - unskippable, mostly uninteresting cutscenes galore - as well.

1caf92 No.14755714

>>14755662

Not that I know of. I felt like the first Nier could be, with the whole specific way to get the real ending.

cc13ba No.14755928

>>14755575

Hard mode starts you everyone out at level one, but it also gives you a lot more to do which in turn gives you considerably more experience then you would get on easy mode. It also gives you better equipment. I recommend you play on hard mode because it gives you the most content.

that really gay game by lab zero has knock off has valkyrie profile gameplay.

742c70 No.14756236

Thanks for the confirmation that VP1 is best played on PS1. I asked since some PS1 games ported to PSP can be decent (Breath of Fire 3), mediocre but fixable (FFT), and bad (Lunar). Really gay that they kept the English voices but used the Japanese mechanics.

2496f6 No.14756251

Also about the differences between Jap and Eng versions, I heard the english version actually improved upon game mechanics but is the jap one too worse off? I was planning to play in japanese

downside is its censored, though its old era censorship like cigars & pentagrams are gone

>>14755474

its the worst of both worlds, like >>14755484 but also has the censored tweaks of the -U version.

>>14756251

Its mostly Qol, Lenneth's skills dont unequip when you change weapons, you can sort items, you can edit equips on non-active party members great for when you send people away

maybe something else but that's just off the top of my head

25c205 No.14756643

My thoughts

>VP1 - is great, play the american PS1 release for the gameplay fixes, play the Japanese ones for the incomprehensible but less cheesy VA, well, maybe cheesy but in Japanese.

>VP2 - combat was ruined, art was bland, story was a little stupid.

>VPCotP - horrible spin-off, stupid plot, messed up gameplay, totally unbalanced, Valkyrie Profile 3 never ever.

25c205 No.14756657

>>14756211

Hard mode isn't even so hard you need cheats, grinding is not even required, you just need to get certain skills on your main party, you get enough currency to stock on necessary items and most "hard" battles boil down to preparation and not level requirements, there are some breakable but powerful weapons you can use to cheese certain bosses.

The real nightmare comes on the extra dungeon, also, don't send Lyseria (or whatever her name is) to Valhalla.

ecad3d No.14756690

i knew there was a documented list of the changes somewhere

Heres all the differences

Regional Differences

Gameplay Changes

The North American version features numerous improvements over the original Japanese release.

You can now sort items in menu.

You can change the equipment of all of your Einherjar, unlike the Japanese version, where only the four members in your active party were applicable.

In the Japanese version, Lenneth's skills will all be unequipped when she changes weapons. Not only does this cause a hassle, but this adds fake difficulty to certain events where you're forced to change your weapons before engaging the fight. This was fixed in the English version by making it "remember" the skill set for each weapon.

There was a bug in the original version that had prevented enemies capable of casting Great Magic, making some later-game boss fights rather pushovers. This was fixed in the North American release so that the bosses are as hard as they're intended to be.

Graphical Changes

The pentagram was removed in Lezard Valeth's teleportation spell.

Badrach's cigarette was edited out completely. This also alters his PWS. In the Japanese version, it involved him dropping ash from his cigarette around the enemy, then setting it on fire by throwing the stub. In the North American version, he drops gunpowder around the enemy instead, then ignites it with his gun.

>Rumors that Toriyama managed to steal resources and ideas for Valkyrie Profile console game for his waifu

So, any truth to these rumors? even the designs they had for Toriyama's Rose is suspect.

7500c9 No.14756738

I liked plume a lot actually. Sad to see I'm the only one here.

>but its not balanced

what VP were balanced? and are srpgs ever actually balanced?

>but the plot is stupid

it's a guy trying to survive medieval intrigue without sacrificing his bros, i thought it was pretty OK. only the good ending was kinda silly, the neutral/bad endings were pretty satisfying.

25c205 No.14756751

>>14756738

The problem in Covenant was how combos required a very close gang up instead of strategic proximity.

Well that sounds like a dealbreaker, does that bug happen often or can it be avoided?

25c205 No.14758839

>>14758819

The VA is horrible in my opinion, is a shame, and the file system on the PS1 release makes it impossible to make an undub version which ironically exists for the PSP version.

>>14755441

OG Valkyrie Profile is definitely one of my absolute faves. Really the only good installation in the series though, 2 and Covenant were both massive drops in quality.

PSP version is very very playable, but as other anons have said, the PSX version is "original" and generally superior.

bca4a3 No.14758951

File: ddc293bef93a4ef⋯.webm (939.33 KB, 640x360, 16:9, videoplayback.webm)

Valkyrie Profile is a solid 4/5. A very innovative take on the JRPG formula, both in regards to gameplay as well as story/characters, that holds strong to this day. A must-play. I don't think anyone would disagree on this.

Valkyrie Profile 2 is much more debatable. Personally, I loved it. It innovated on Valkyrie Profile's formula in a way that was interesting, and kept things fresh. The story and characters weren't as memorable as the first but they were all still solid. It changed things up and kept other things the same, and it was solid all around, but it just can't live up to the glory of the original. If you liked Valkyrie Profile though, you'll like Valkyrie Profile 2. If you only kinda-sorta liked Valkyrie Profile, then you might like Valkyrie Profile 2, but it probably won't change your mind in regards to the things you didn't like about the first one.

I haven't played the third one so I won't comment on it. The short synopsis of the main character and story was enough to keep me from emulating it and seeing it for myself, so if any of you would like to comment on it, I'm all ears.

Well, I found this https://blacklabel-translations.com/archives/793

Guess I'll wait it out until the guy fixes it

25c205 No.14759388

>>14759065

Yep, when you see the files alone in the disc is clear you can't tamper with it the same way you could with other PS1 games.

f0dcd7 No.14759853

The PSP has the better translation, but lacks some minor improvements the PS1 version has.

They don't really matter all that much in the grand scheme of things, just make sure you set Lenneth's skills when switching from sword to bow.

As for the game, the first one is a must-play.

My only issue with it is the incredibly lengthy introduction, but is otherwise an outstanding game.

It is also one of the very few jrpgs that do not have a complete faggot for a protagonist.

>>14758383

The game isn't difficult at all, and if you know what you're doing Hard can actually be easier than Normal.

My only suggestion would be to find a spoiler-free guide for the A ending so you don't lock yourself out of it because it is VERY easy to fuck it up and there is no way you'd figure out on your own what to do to get it.

And like >>14755928 suggested, playing on Hard is best because it allows you to recruit all characters and see every dungeon which the other two do not let you do.

f0dcd7 No.14759868

>>14755622

This, Lezard is probably one of my favourite vidya characters.

He is the man who will do everything to get his waifu.
