It also had a very abrupt ending, which is a damn shame. I liked how it had a horror vibe to it, but the characters and dialogue are pretty funny and laid back. An odd juxtaposition that worked really well, I genuinely enjoyed it despite the so-bad-its-good voice acting every once in a while.
It had a nice pace going and some genuinely challenging bosses right before the final boss. When I thought I was approaching the half-way point of the game, I was actually nearing the end. During the final stretch of the game you encounter easy enemies that give out tons of exp whereas before you really had to fight for it. There are some loose ends that do not get addressed at all and there is essentially no build-up to the final boss, who is also a push-over.

I specified 5: Gold Edition, with the God tier DLC (including Desperate Escape), and unlike 4, it has an amazing second half, in addition to a mostly great first half.

But 2 is literally just RE1. You get a large puzzle box of a building with an east and west wing that are 2 floors each, and you get 3 keys that let you go to the next area where you get the fourth key to finish up the main area. You also get four key items that unlock a door to a new area, and then is a maze like cavern to the lab (but RE2's is a lot more linear with only 2 paths in each hall, and there's only 2 or 3 halls) and the final lab requires you to get a thing to restore power and unlock the doors, resulting in a boss fight against a big monster.

The addition of the two character scenarios interacting the way they do adds just so much more replayablity and nuance to the whole game as well.
I actually kind of wondered if REmake was going to do something similar to RE2 in regards to the Jill and Chris campaigns but looking back I'm glad they didn't and just kept it the same. It really makes me wonder which Mansion scenario is canon though.

1's mansion is much tighter than 2's police station and is a lot more fleshed out. In RE1 as Jill, you can explore 4 different wings of the mansion, all of which go on their own half hour long tours if you're new. RE2 has two wings from the start, both of which are fairly linear, and one of them has no reason to be used yet.
There's other stuff like RE1 pacing keys and key items better, rather than just throwing them at you one after the other and making it possible to get the first 3 in any order, and it also allows for you to skip half the mansion if you feel like it.
And 2's world building is only better than 1, because 1 didn't get all the lore it was supposed to have. Character development only exists for Ada in 2 as well, and 3 is better than it there.

He wouldn't have needed to tie up Claire's storyline, though, if they had just written the story to conclude in a way that didn't require Chris to tie it up. Wesker could have still been in it, but played a more subdued role and behind the scenes role. They could have expanded him into a villain that has a much greater role in events in the series - rather than just using him as a foil to Chris. It makes sense that he would be after the T-Veronica Virus for his own ends, and that he peruses goals on his own without also having to arrange things so that he can get revenge on Chris at the same time.
They pull this yin and yang/rivalry shit and it just makes Wesker look like a yaoi tsundere who's just trying to get Chris's attention but doesn't know how to express his feelings, so uses dominating the world through bioweapons as a way to get Chris's attention. The characters are tightly narratively and thematically linked, and their arcs should begin and end between them, but they don't have to be exclusive to that arc and there's no need to push that shit into Claire's game.

Nah, nigga. RE2s campaigns play out exactly the same every time. You go through Leon A, Leon B, Claire A and Claire B and that's it. Nothing changes.
RE1 had story elements that shifted slightly depending on when you went to certain locations. Things like meeting Rebecca in the safe room with Chris if you go there first, or outside the snake room if you manage to find Richard first. There's also the differences in letting Rebecca come with you or not when she asks in the safe room.
Jill has some too, like Barry giving her the grenade rounds or the Jill sandwich scene depending on how you do things. There's more than I listed, but these are just examples
Not to really knock RE2 for how it handled its campaigns, it was a really good game and seeing how things changed in each campaign was really neat. It's just that you have no real influence on where the story goes so replaying it after that last campaign is just routine at that point.

I never said Chris should win, but the fights are so one-sided that Wesker might as well be punching babies. It's a boss-fight tease for a latr game that never actually puts YOU up against an unbeatable foe - but just shows you via cutscene the power disparity. That's bad game design.

He apparently wasn't lost, despite Capcom's own shit writing in the intro, since Leon seemed to find him or a way to contact him rather quickly and pass along Claire's message. Him coming in at the final act to save the day just cheapens everything you do up to that point. You don't even get to land the killing blow on Alexia with Claire, or have her aiding in the final fight. It's completely out of the character that Capcom had spent the first 2/3rds of the game establishing. You'd think she'd at least want revenge for Steve. She goes all the way to Europe and assaults a heavily armed Umbrella HQ all by herself, pulls off matrix-like trick-shots to take out entire squads of Umbrella troops, and then decides to just go fuck off and wait by the plane while the battle which determines if they'll even escape with their lives goes on? Really?

CV could have done that, and even brought in Chris, without taking the focus off of Claire. If they're going to switch characters like that mid-stream, it'd be preferable to kill her rather than just turn her into an even less useful Ashley. Everything that CV established for Chris could have been done, and done better, in his own game. Not as a tack-on to Claire's game, which didn't even end up being a mainline entry and more of a side story.

Because Leon got mad connections after RE2, which is established by the RE3 epilogue and it's fully established that he is friends with detectives in Gun Survivor
