Fallout 3/New Vegas:

>When weapons are in poor condition they can "jam" upon reloading, costing the player time during critical moments

>This problem can be alleviated by picking up repair kits or the same weapon to use to repair your weapon

>If weapon health hits zero it just disappears from your hands and has to be repaired to be used again

Far Cry 2:

>Textures change in accordance with weapon condition

>When weapons are in poor condition they'll jam at random and you have to mash the reload button to clear out the jam

>Problem can only be alleviated by going to a gun store and grabbing a new one (As weapons picked up from fallen enemies are always on the verge of breaking)

>If weapon health hits zero the weapon will break before your very eyes and cannot be used ever again with no way to repair them (Making the gold AKs a rather pointless easter egg)

Degradation played a bigger role in 3 than New Vegas so it is kind of a pointless carry over. Weapon durability mattered a lot more in 3 because 3 had a lot more caves filled to burst with ghouls and molerats so unlike NV, you'd actually run into a situation where your weapon condition would go from high to low.

>no way to repair any guns in the game, they just end up being useless, even special weapons

Deal with it you nigger. Weapons degrade slowly enough that you'll find a replacement before long. If it's too much for you use a mod.

>to "unjam" a gun you just reload it which is a short as fuck animation that just interrupts combat for the sake of inducing a poorly delivered panic

I'm honestly not sure what else you want from guns jamming. Do you want them to blow up in your hands? Maybe a minigame to unjam them?

Fallout's jamming system was practically nonexistent thanks to the repair function and the fact that you can pick up anything and everything you come across. In many cases, you could walk out of a lengthy fire fight with weapons in better condition than when you entered.

Personally I'd say Fallout 3 did it better in that it was something that was more than mildly inconvenient and you could actually repair your weapons. And the odds of an enemy having a weapon you could use just as effectively were lower, usually, because of the skill system. It added a level of challenge to the game beyond just "go back to your weapon storeroom and pick up a new, mint condition one". Though in early game Far Cry 2 it's definitely a challenge, just not for long.

That said, Far Cry 2 was more interesting in that it was visible in the gun and had a really cool catastrophic failure animation when the gun did break. Fallout 3 only ever had the occasional "gun jams a bit while reloading" animation.

966fd5 No.14721819

>>14721807

The idea is you're taking working/better condition parts out of one and putting them in the other. Obviously it's oversimplified, and I don't know what 7fe2f8 is talking about with cleaning them, but complaining about this small degree of required maintenance is just the kind of laziness that lead Bethesda to make Fallout 4 what it was.

Most of the important bits that play a role in a jam are easy to access with a simple field strip, and you can swap whichever one is less battered into your old gun.

>>14721819

The only place that reasoning falls apart is with non-mechanized melee weapons and armor, where it really does become Nevadan mailman magic.

Gears of war's quick reload mechanic that rewarded good timing/ muscle memory and punished you if you fucked it up. Having said that I reckon it could have done without any of the gimmicks like spread reduction/rate of fire increase and just left it as a rushed reload mechanic.

The quick reload mechanic was good because it rewarded you for paying attention (the gun jamming made the reload about as long as if you hadn't done the quick reload). It's incredibly stupid to think you can somehow load superbullets into a gun just because you reloaded it 'correctly' but it's one of those stupidly game-y things I can forgive because it gives you an actual reason to use the mechanic.

222a1f No.14722946

>>14719264

It was pointless only because it was trivial. If expensive and unique weapons were more expensive to fix (or could be fixed only under certain conditions), then the player would have been forced to write in the build back up guns and other tricks.

It would also balance the game. New Vegas gets very dull when you put your hands on the holorifle. Everything just dies before you. But if you have to rely on average guns and use the OP guns only when cornered, than all gunfights become more interesting.

>I have to clean and take care of my guns

If the game actually involved cleaning them, you might have a point, but that's not how New Vegas's repair system works. You take two weapons and slap them together and somehow get a weapon in better condition. If the game had something like, say, cleaning kits, patches of cloth, lubricants, etc, then you could claim you clean the guns, but, NV doesn't have that.

>>14721819

How are you going to salvage parts from a tire iron in the field to make another tire iron work better? Or, baseball bats? Even with knives and swords, how does swapping whatever replaceable parts they share - say, the handle, or tang - magically make the blade cut better? Why does taking two guns both in near perfect condition, and swapping a barely damaged part from one to the other - eg, whatever minor "damage" or dirt would be made from firing the rifle a single time - make the entire other rifle get tossed into the trash? If you're just salvaging a few parts from it, where does the rest go? Even Oblivion handled weapon condition better than New Vegas did.

6ed35e No.14724717

>>14724067

Really, you need two meters. One for dirt, one for actual component damage/corrosion. You build up dirt over time, faster if you shoot shitty ammo or crawl around a lot. Dirt accumulation can cause jams or failure to fire depending on weapon type (AKs would be resistant, ARs would gum up pretty quickly). Cleaning can be easily done in the field and removes most or all dirt at the cost of minor resources - cloth, and oil removes most, solvent removes all.

If dirt isn't cleaned frequently enough, you get corrosion. It'll cause jams and misfeeds and FTF that can't be prevented with ordinary cleaning, and if it gets bad enough, can lead to catastrophic failure a la FC2. Some corrosion can be fixed with simple part swaps, but you'll probably need to get a gunsmith to do anything advanced. Sure, you can try to do a barrel replacement yourself, but you'll probably fuck up the headspacing and will have a catastrophic failure from that a few hundred rounds later.

You don't need to get too complex, either. Just break the gun down into barrel, trigger group, action, and receiver. Maybe stock, as well - a broken stock makes aiming much harder.
