Optimization is one thing but the gulf is so big it's ridiculous. It's literally like the PC "port" is just the console disk painted over to look like a PC one and the developers just except the PC to brute force that shit to make it run.

I have a GTX 1060 6GB SC, 16 GB RAM, top of the line processor and storage space out the ass, both HDD and SSD. I shouldn't even have the slightest hiccup when running this thing with everything turned on and to the max, yet I still occasionally do.

Its not hard to understand. Consoles do one job and do that job well. Devs know what is inside a Ps4/Switch/Xbox One. PCs more powerful but are built for many jobs and game devs have no standard to work with.

Gamedev here. It's all about where effort is spent. It used to be that all the effort went into the PC version and the console version was just some hackjob that ran well enough to sell, but it's been the other way around for a long time for AAA. Indies tend to be PC-first because console development is too hard for them which is why indie games on console run like shit.

Nope, he stopped working there shortly afterwards. He moved to different country and works for another big studio now. Most of what he told me were funny little things the playtesters reported, like how he'd get reports about how cigarette buds would be in a puddle in a spot where they should've been washed down the drain by the rain. Actually it's because console architecture is different from PC. They use shared memory for both general functions and video, while PCs have separate memory banks that are larger but dedicated to other tasks. Average GPU has like 2-4 GB of graphics memory, which is more than what the xbone or nogamesstation games actually use, but less than they have "available", so the games, once ported to PC, have to try to fit everything in this "smaller" memory bank. They run like shit because they put another layer of abstraction between the actual game and the memory, which is easier than redesigning the entire game but very inefficient.

Consider the fact that games ported the other direction (PC->console) run well on consoles, but also on PC. Development for PC is usually easier and cheaper than console, especially because no retarded licensing is necessary. Patches also don't cost thousands to deploy, so you don't need as much QA.

PhysX in general is shit. Arkham Knight actually runs smooth as silk when PhysX is turned off, the lag only starts when PhysX is turned on and even then the physics is pretty selective - sometimes objects behave like they should, other times they might as well be static.
