4c7c32 No.14711435

It's not worth $40 even after they "finished" it (ripped off a bunch of existing mods) but it is a very fun game that you should pirate. Just be warned that once you get the hang of it, the fun largely comes from self-imposed challenges and mods. The solar system is almost completely barren. Once the thrill of reaching your firsts (orbit, thorough science scans, landing) wears off, there's no real reason to go back to a place. Science Mode is a nice idea but poorly executed - you'll be scraping together every last bit of science from Kerbin at the beginning and earning more than you'll ever need by the end, even with mods fleshing out the tree.

That being said, I had a lot of fun making a permanent base on Minmus recently with Kerbal Planetary Base Systems, KAS, KIS, etc. It would've probably been more fun if I had used a life support mod, but I'm satisfied with the experience.

The only way to stop piracy would be to sell the game on specialised hardware, like a tiger electronics thing or arcade machine. Even then emulators would come a few years down the line, but at least its a few years instead of a few days.

Now, releasing a game on a cloud gaming platform only would also be a way to stop piracy, but given latency and bandwidth issues it would never take off. This way is only beatable by a leak or hacking the servers to get the game data.

Denuvo like DRM will get worse, but only to their detriment as it will have an increasing negative impact on the quality of the game (shit performance) so it will get to such a state that even normal fags "works on my machine at 60fps guis :^)" will start to notice and at that point corporations can be taught a lesson.

476743 No.14729876

Pirates are merely a convenient scapegoat, and DRM doesn't exist just to stop them. Businessmen want to lock down software and ownership rights as hard as they can. Look at the shit Microsoft tried to pull with xbone. That wasn't to stop piracy; it was to suck as much money out of customers as they could. Even if every pirate suddenly stopped, we'd still be getting DRM shoved down our throat, because these companies don't even want us to be able to make backups of the software we paid for.

Cloud platforms would only work in countries with insanely good internet infrastructure, like Japan. The Switch version of Phantasy Star Online 2 is a great example of this. The Switch apparently can't handle having the game files on the system (something even the Vita can do), so PSO2 for the Switch had to be cloud based. In Japan, it seems to work passably, but outside of Japan, the connection is so bad that hardly anyone gets through the tutorial. Also, since the Switch doesn't have the game files on hand, there's practically zero probability of the Switch version ever being compatible with private servers in the future.

Then where do those mysterious game purchases come from every 100 illegally obtained games? Pirates don't operate in a vacuum that separates them from non-pirates.

30b361 No.14731462

>>14731392

I worked on a relatively large indie game for a while that was a hit and got to see the numbers. Uploads to TPB didn't boost sales. A popular streamer touching it sent sales into orbit. Pirates do nothing but enable others to avoid paying while trying to convince themselves they are not parasites. For games that can't get a popular streamer's attention, like niche games, they just get eaten alive by pirates.

I'm more upset about the fact that it costs $40 when they didn't even put in all the features they said they would. They pretty much grabbed a bunch of mods people made and slapped them into the base game and said that was it, no more updates. Bunch of faggots don't deserve my money if they're gonna pull that shit.

you should read that study and not headlines about it. It ultimately finds that there isn't enough evidence that piracy causes any harm due to a lack of sales information being made public. I'm personally of the belief that piracy doesn't matter except in one situation. The people who pirate wouldn't have bought it anyway and it literally does no harm. The only exception is Boris selling copies of the latest game out of his garage at local markets. Pirates and piracy do not matter and nothing gets achieved by pirating.

actually liquidating does not mean the same thing as spending.

In financial terms liquidation means to turn a solid asset (like a car, a building, or long term stocks) into a liquid asset (typically cash/money, or bitcoin). Solid assets are hard to use as a direct means of exchange, where as you can typically spend liquid assets. Saying liquidating monetary assets makes no sense.

It would make more sense to say expending or exchanging monetary assets.

9af720 No.14755678

>>14755470

>It does indicate that film and music are harmed by it

I'd like to see source for that, because I've only witnessed the opposite. The Beatles have stopped making music long ago and they're still making millions for their label even today, despite being the band with the most pirated songs in the entire world.

Music is the easiest piece of media you can acquire. Be it listening to it on youtube, recording it through the internet, or even listening to the radio. Hell, if it wasn't for Napster, we'd all still being forced to pay +$20 dollars for an entire album just to listen to one song that caught your attention. Its creation was a very much needed, and justified, reaction to greedy record labels who were steadily raising prices of their products, and forced them to change in such a way that paying for music is as easy as finding the specific song you like in a band's website and being allowed to listen to their music before buying it. If it weren't for piracy, you'd either have to hope the radio would play songs you were interested in their entirety so you'd know you liked them, or take a shot in the dark and shell out +$20 for the whole album it comes in, only to find out all the other songs are shit. Thanks to piracy, labels were forced to drop their kikery, which is why now you're able to go into a music store and find music players + headphones on aisles to listen to what you're considering to buy.

You can test drive a car before buying it. You can test a mattress before buying it. You can look at a painting before buying it. It's all a matter of having the courtesy of showing your customer that your product is good, not deny them until they shell out the cash, which is precisely what today's publishers are fighting hard to get rid of, and also why we see so much mediocrity in modern media; why make something good when you can half-ass it and charge people for it without letting them know your product is mediocre beforehand.

Piracy is merely a guarantee that you'll be able to try before you buy.
