One of my friends tried to convince me of this fact as well. Logically every Alpha game would at some point cost more money, e.g. Mincecraft. But I think the dev of Dayz actually never planned on finishing it anyway. Just like scam citizen and an assload of other kickstarter projects never saw the light of day.

Yeah, pretty much that. Also, there is no incentive to release a finished product if you can keep milking people for cash. Star Citizen (and virtually every project on Patreon) finds it much more profitable to drip feed a few updates in a year to keep the sheep calm and forking over the shekels.
