That's where the Xbox One names comes from, it's the first xbox in what might be an up to 15-20 year long series of similar consoles. This way they can scale the numbers of upgrades based on demand as well, which is why we're not seeing them even bother with VR until it becomes more popular.
Also as to why they don't seem to care much about the actual games on it, they took a look at the financials and realized that buying timed exclusivity or hot properties made much more sense than trying to create their own IPs or buying out studios. Their investments over the last 20 years in gaming software have not been fruitful asides for sheltering overseas income from taxes. I'm not going to go into the details but both Rare and Mojang(both European) didn't cost Microsoft a single penny thanks to overseas tax loopholes, which explains why they don't care if they produce anything worthwhile.

Never owned a Xbox, but I've always liked the XB360 controller for playing stuff on PC. Best ergonomic design and analog sticks that feel very good and responsive. The buttons also have just the right degree of clickiness.

It's still chuckleworth, because Microsoft can't really salvage the Xbox One at this point without completely rebranding Xbox. That means a new console launch, and hopefully they get it right next time. They, they might be able to draw a profit on it and consider it a "technical" success, but it'll never be the market leader. The amount of capital it would take to turn things around for Microsoft would dwarf the invested needed to just create a new hardware platform. Furthermore, they still HAVE to make a hard generational distinction or else risking confusing the very, very stupid public at large. The same people who didn't understand that the WiiU was it's own console line and not just an accessory for the Wii. The same people who have ensured that every single attempt at a fragmented hardware platform has failed because they can't read fucking boxes. This isn't the PC market, where you at least have to be minimally intelligent enough to use an operating system at a basic level. These are smartphone as your primary computation device level retards, and without the mitigating factors that make smartphone marketplaces viable. Namely, that most everything is low-end ad-ridden free to use software (so even if your old phone can't run the new software, you're not exactly out anything)… and there is no physical marketplace for smartphone apps, meaning they can filter software by your hardware capabilities automatically. There's nothing on the Xbox platform to prevent a retard from going into walmart and picking up an Xbox One Rev 2.33.1 compatible game, when their Xbox One hardware is only capable of running Rev. 1.62.2.
If Microsoft were to switch over to an entirely digital storefront, then they could do a simple hardware check and filter results by what is compatible with the user's hardware - but they can't do that without pissing off retailers who would then refuse to stock Xbox hardware (since they make all their game money on physical game sales). Nobody is going to go to the Microsoft store to buy their Xbox hardware, and few will want to have to rely on Amazon or Alibaba or Newegg to buy their game console.
Meanwhile, all Sony has to say is "Next Gen" or "PS5" and the hype train will bury Microsoft. I get what Microsoft is trying to accomplish here, but they're terrible at gauging the market, and I think this "one platform" psst, we're just making locked-down PCs strategy is going to bite them in the ass hard. Or, rather that it already has, and it will continue to bite them harder the more they push.

On a game dev conference last week I talked to a publisher who specialises in indie games, or rather anything with a small budget (think <200k). They say that in the last year it has always been the same for every game - majority of sales on Switch, with Xbox slightly beating PS4 and Steam being on the very low end especially post-Direct.

Their management constantly makes horrible decisions. The reason why Rare is a sad shell of its former self is because of MS management. MS as a whole is too bloated and corporate. The people who call all the shots are the people who spend money on market research and do what they think will make the most profits after analyzing the market research.
People in charge of Xbox are the exact opposite of Iwata. They don't care about video games, they don't want to make fun games. They want to make a product that provides a profit. Even if the game itself is not fun. They only care about money.
You can see Xbox had a glimmer of being by gamers and people who actually like and care about video games at the birth of Xbox. You had people sneaking behind Bill Gate's back to make something out of passion. And it actually did have good games.

Kotor came out on Xbox months before the PC version so for a while it was 100% exclusive and to this day Xbox is the only console that can play those games. To verify that they are incompetent you only have to look at the enterprise LTSB version of windows which is the version with the least ruinous bullshit. It's the most workable version but has things like group policies that actually don't do anything which are vital for use in an enterprise environment. The fucking XBOX LIVE dvr that fucks with UI and keybinds and uses resources, which can't be uninstalled without the microsoft store which is incompatible on the LTSB version. The networking and firewall is generally a mess as well which you need third party programs to utilize the OS functionality in any meaningful manner.

It's pretty much only happening in America, though. Globally, the Xbox brand is in the shitter. And while I can confirm that most of my old Xbox 360 friends (the Americans and personal acquaintances anyhow) continued on with the Xbox One - they didn't do so because of the games or the hardware. They did so because they didn't want to leave behind their friends lists or walk away from all those "achievements" they've collected in the 7th gen. Most of them have also gotten to the point in their lives where video games aren't really all that important to them, so they're content to just sit back and play their multiplat MMOFPSs for a few hours and then fall asleep drunk.
Microsoft is positioning themselves into a niche corner with a degrading demographic. It's a damned efficient way to make yourself completely irrelevant. It'd be one thing if they could have made Windows 10 worth using, and made the Windows Store actually functional and competitive… but they saddle users with spyware and a marketplace which is years of development cycles outpaced by even the fucking mobile market and with download management so godawful that it's Pre-Millenium Netscape levels of broken. A lot of Xbox gamers have moved on to the PC, and if Microsoft wants to co-opt them into the Xbox ecosystem on their PCs… then they have to compete with marketplaces which not only offer far superior products at far cheaper prices (or free, in the case of piracy), but in which the level of user-level administration is antithetical to the entirety of their console line's market strategy. Why would anybody buy a game on the Windows Marketplace when you could get a pirated (or Steam) copy for free (or half the price), where you can apply community patches and mods, and where you'll never have to pay an online fee to play online.
And for what, what possible reason is there to buy a game in the Microsoft Store over Steam, GOG, or just torrent it? Xbox Live achievements? And all the while, even the "diehards" in the Xbox community are playing shit like Recrap and No Man's Sea - eyeballing the PS4 and all the praise it's getting, and salivating over cinematic garbage like God of Soy, Spoodermang, and TLoU - getting sour fucking grapes. Their market position, tenuous as it is, isn't going to last.

It was the shareholders, I think. And no, not all of them. Just a significant portion that either weren't happy with the management of the Xbox division and weren't seeing the profits they expected - or they simply thought that Microsoft had no business wasting time and money on video games. A lot of these people invested in Microsoft because they were a tech company, and had no idea how (or inclination) to gauge the market for entertainment, let alone video games. Not to mention that if Microsoft fucks up and damages the Microsoft brand by playing around with toys - that could have an effect on the OS/Server side of their business.
There was a lot of talk there for a while of Microsoft spinning off the Xbox division into it's own separate company right after the double-whammy of MS's historic hardware failures (RROD) and the financial crisis. The investors didn't really know at the time if or to what degree the videogame industry could perform in a recession. A few key managers (don't recall who) resisted the push, and eventually Bill Gates came around and championed the system - albeit with the condition that Xbox finally return to his initial vision of a home-multimedia all-in-one box that's more about TV, TV, Movies, TV, Sports, TV, and Call of Duty as an afterthought. Hence the big push to unify the Xbox and Windows brands, all that talk of ending console generations in favor of more "phone-like" iterative hardware releases, running a modified Windows 10 on the Xbox One, and not to mention the disastrous E3. They're not interested in making a game console that can rival Sony. They're interested in building an ecosystem that can rival Google and Apple.
Insofar as this gen, it's always been about Google and Apple - not Sony and Nintendo.

They thought everybody would just be onboard from the word go, but after E3 they realized - oh shit, these people are mad because they were expecting a video game system.
