>game has a plot import moment happen to the player character
>instead of showing it in a cutscene or doing it the way it does everything else, it's done in a more interactive way
I really like this shit, always makes the moment more impacting and memorable.
MGS3 has this in the end where you **kills the boss*. It could've been done in a cutscene where snake shoots her and be done with it , but instead it just leaves you there, gun in hand and pointing at her head. The game sets the scene, but you pull the trigger. It really made the scene more emotional, even though your relation with her wasn't really developed throughout the game.
NieR has a really neat scene after the end of the first route. The only time you input anything is when you choose the name of the file, which the game uses as the name of your character, everything else is done via choosing an option, from when you're talking to when you need to decide what to do next. In this scene, however, your daughter is in sort of a coma and you need to remind her of things she likes to make her want to keep on living and therefore wake up before it's too late. It has four questions, the first one is "What food do I like the most?", she automatically answers "Cookies, that's it", the next two are equally mundane and answered automatically. Then comes the last question "Who do I love the most?", and, instead of prompting you to choose from "dad" and other two or three different answers, it simply gives you a prompt to write whatever you want, and the only correct answer is the name of your character. I almost shed a tear like a little bitch after that.

Sidequests in Nier were really fucking good.
I liked that one where you go take a flower to the guy's GF, the house is empty and you fight a shade that drops the same flower when you exit, thinking that the shade killed the girl.
Five years later the guy has moved on and married another girl, he's selling flowers and he asks you to take one to this girl in Facade. The girl says the flower is really nostalgic, her neighbor really liked those flowers, but five years back she *turned into a shade. The girl didn't die, you killed her.

NieR does it right by having the sidequests be part of the story and expand on it, with the exact same tone of the main story itself.

Dead Space is more an example of weapon imbalance because the first weapon you start out with is the most balanced and useful weapon in the game and remains so throughout. While you can use other weapons it's completely possible to just stick with it. Most of the time I remember switching from it was when I ran out of ammo.

DMC4SE did a similar thing where the screen transition to the mission results was different depending on if you're playing as Dante or Vergil, for Dante the screen fades to gunshots and for Vergil it's sliced up instead. There's more gunshots/slices depending on what your rank is going to be, too, it's a nice little tease before you see the final result.
That gunshot screen result thing started in DMC3 obviously but I don't believe that Vergil had a unique screen transition in DMC3SE, I think it just faded to black

You spend the whole game shooting shit, you need to do it to win the bosses, you instinctively know which button is the "shoot button". In that scene the game leaves you there, you, the boss and the background, that's all, no HUD or anything else to clutter the scene. You know exactly what you have to do, though you might be trying not to acknowledge it, eventually you'll either turn the game off or shoot like you've done the whole game. That's what makes the game so great.
When you put a prompt on the screen like "press F" or the gay shit in >>14681934 , it just turns into another mind numbing "press the button on screen", ruining the visuals in the progress. Not to mention paying respects isn't a game mechanic, you do that once at the beginning of the game and that's it, just another forgettable moment were it not for the game, with MGS 3 you have shooting which is widely used before the scene.
Besides, the scene is so iconic that if anyone tried to copy it, like any shitty dev would do nowadays, it'd instantly be recognized as "that scene from metal gear solid", taking even more away from it.

I remember when people played games for fun, and not for carrots.
TBH I thought Miyamoto was just being contrarian when he said he didn't like achievements because he thought gameplay should be rewarding in an of itself, since Nintendo does have a "Not Invented Here, Shit Sucks" mentality, but I've definitely come around to their way of thinking.

Because in MGS it was a pay-off at the end of a story that happened in gameplay to a character you've grown to know.
In COD it was a contrite and meaningless gesture that meant nothing because the person you were paying respects to was literally nobody you knew, and it came across as hollow and meaningless, especially in a place like the US that likes to say "thank you for your service" but then defund veterans affairs to provide gibs to welfare mooches. It was perfectly American TBH, and that made it worthy of mockery.

Because you're carrying out an action you've been doing all game, but you're being set up in way. It's exactly the same as firing any other time, except that you know the weight of it is much greater.
Press F to pay respect fundamentally doesn't work. The concept of paying respect is at odds with something as simple as a button press.
If you wanted to do that scene right, you'd have to set up saluting as something you'd already done. Probably to a superior officer in a scene where not doing it quickly enough gets your chewed out and maybe by moving the joystick or the mouse in a certain way to a subtle cue. Do that a few times and then we have that scene and you leave a lasting impression as the player instinctively salutes in response.

I never thought of it this way.
Really, the reason why most modern games are trash is they rely on pre-existing notions of what constitutes as "impacting" or some other likely buzzword these cunts like to use. Problem with that is that it's always subjective. When you shoehorn a shitty context button to salute, or have some "deep emotional story" about homogaysex, nobody fucking cares because there's no backdrop contained within the piece of media you're presenting it in. When you just throw in things that "you just, like, have to know, man", it's not only pretentious, but shitty quality in design as well.
You have to establish things beforehand. This is a fundamental aspect of storytelling in film - establishing shots, establishing characters, etc. The ultimate irony is that all of these knuckle dragging retards writing this stuff idolize movies, yet they forget some of the most basic shit that even B movies manage to get.
