I wouldn't really call it the worst one, but it's not my favorite either.
Gaiden > Darius > G-Darius > Darius II > bunch of other stuff > Darius Burst > Darius Twin
That's right, Darius Burst is garbage on the same level as Darius Twin.
57fce7 No.14677054
>>14677019
I don't really consider Darius Twin a real shmup. And in all fairness, Darius Burst is probably the closest the series has ever been to its roots while adding new things to the table. And Another Chronicle EX is absolutely impeccable. I'd rate it more Gaiden > Darius II / DariusBurstCS > Darius > G-Darius > Darius Twin.
In my opinion the only thing that G-Darius has going for it are a select few songs from the game, like G-Zero and Kimera II. But you don't fuck up the 'WARNING!' sound. Never.

Bullshit, it dumps on the entire idea of losing power upon death, powering up itself has little meaningful variance, and much like G-Darius it has this hamfisted attempt to implement a scoring system with a very gimmicky loser mechanic.
And Darius II better than 1? With less bosses and that brutal power-up system? Anon pls.
430f53 No.14677080
Oh yeah and just like G-Darius it's a shitty 2.5D game where the threedee graphics actively impede discerning collision zones.

Chronicle Saviours (including Another Chronicle and thus to some extent Burst) offer the best gameplay Darius has to offer, even if it's aesthetically inferior to Gaiden and G. For starters, it actually has a scoring system worth a damn, whereas Gaiden was too straightforward for any significant scoring strategies on top of being held back by items returning random score values, and scoring in G mostly consisted of memorizing where to fire your beam and awkwardly positioning yourself to kill things with your options for an additional score multiplier. Meanwhile in Burst you get a higher multiplier for finishing off the last enemy in a group with your Burst, on top of the Burst being rechargeable by dealing damage and canceling bullets making it more flexible to get higher scores, especially if you're playing with Assault and finishing off the last one with a Burst Finish.
Beam Dueling in G would consist of mashing button, whereas it's a matter of timing in Burst. It feels nowhere as visceral in Burst, but the upside is that the boss doesn't have to be paused for what is essentially a QTE, so bosses continue attacking like normal in Burst and Counterbursting doesn't make you invulnerable towards attacks from up and down.
The Fixed Burst was an afterthought in Burst, but in CS most of the bosses were redesigned to fire more bullets, making good FBurst placement and energy management even more important. Just compare Great Thing in Burst to G.T.B in CS. And even then it doesn't have to be solely used for defense, you can drop one to output more damage when a full Burst doesn't really call for it.
Being able to turn in CS/AC allows for enemies to come from both sides (G-Darius only turned the player ship during select moments), which gets quite fun in the rotating fortress stages, especially in AC with its massive screen space (and some of the rare Twin bosses). The increased screen space in AC also makes the limited shot count of your ships matter (with the tongue-in-cheek exception of the Gaiden and its supercharged autofire) and facilitates even more point-blanking, making it the closest to the originals in this respect, especially when played with Origin.
Some of the later bosses can get quite demanding because of how many different bullet types are used at once, and from how many angles you would get shot at. The bosses in Darius I were just too simplistic because of technical limitations and Gaiden and G had too much of a tendency to reuse the same simplistic spread pattern with some trademark Taito homing bullets thrown in.
The older stages from the PSP game are still present in CS and still kind of average, though the newer additions in CS and AC are actually rather neat, such as the speed-up cube rush, the callback to D1 in zone Z, the aforementioned rotating fortress stage, and some of the hyperspace sections.

>it dumps on the entire idea of losing power upon death
what good did this shit ever do but make recovery more difficult than necessary
>powering up itself has little meaningful variance
the power-up system in all Darius game was equally silly since abstaining from leveling up would involve trying to avoid rotating power-ups, at least in Burst you had more reason to abstain since Missiles would cancel other missile-type bullets and Laser would cancel Laser-type bullets

In addition to the wide range of power itself, it made actually powering up feel gratifying.
