DON'T FORGET TO SUPPORT THE GAMES, BUT DON'T FALL FOR THE NISA BULLSHIT

>Latest News

- After an email campaign, a retranslation, apologies, and 7 months of delays, Ys 8 finally got released on PC. And NISA fucked up, the port is so terrible that only 25% of the Steam reviews being positive. Western and Japanese websites are reporting this story. In other words, a huge backlash. Meanwhile, NISA promised to fix everything. Don't worry, they'll probably be able to fix in a few weeks what they couldn't fix in 1.5 years. Absolutely. Ha.

- Trails of Cold Steel I & II is now on PC through Steam and GOG with gameplay enhancements and newly voiced lines of dialogue.

- Ys Seven ported to PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store

- Ys: Memories of Celceta ported to PC by XSEED, coming this summer

- Zwei!! and Zwei II are finally released on PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store

- Tokyo Xanadu released on PS4/PC with an improved translation, but there are a few issues like slangs, memes and random chtulhu lines.

- Also available on PC: the Trails in the Sky trilogy (now with Turbo mode), Xanadu Next, Ys: I & II Chronicles, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin.

- Trails of Cold Steel 4: The End of Saga to release in the fall of 2018 in Japan.

- XSEED's E3 2018's line-up includes a "PC/PS4/PS4 Pro RPG".

HURTING NISA WHERE IT HURTS: HOW AND WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

NISA's current situation

NISA has been losing IPs and they are in a very bad situation. You have to understand that NIS makes absolutely no profits at all and relies exclusively on NISA to stay afloat, meaning that NISA itself has a big handicap. In other words: they are desperate. They know that if they can't keep bringing new games/releases, they could die. But what if they lose Falcom as well?

NIS/A's relationship with Falcom

In the last years, NISA has been releasing Falcom games on Europe on behalf of XSEED (which translates and releases their games most of the time for NA and PC). This time, NISA went all desperate and managed to get Ys 8. They promised a PC port day 1 and French tl.

But because the translation was garbage, there was a small email campaign directed to Falcom. A few days later, they apologised promised a retranslation (Falcom probably saw the emails and demanded NIS/A an answer).

In other words, they fucked up and Falcom didn't like that at all. And they just fucked up again: the day 1 PC port got delayed 7 months and it's utter trash.

The final blow to hurt even further Falcom and NISA's relationship

In a recent shareholder's meeting, Falcom's president pointed out how well received are their games on PC thanks to Steam and GOG reviews. If the game gets a massive amount of negative reviews, Falcom will get the message: fans don't want NISA's releases.

What to do

Get the game on Steam or GOG, play the game for less than 2 hours, then submit a negative review- Don't make it painfully obvious that you hate NISA, focus exclusively on the issues. Finally, ask for a refund and get your money back.

On the other hand, mark as helpful all the negative reviews on Steam/GOG and do the oppositve to positive reviews.

Ys 8 was a game made with the Western market in mind, and NISA fucked them up. Now it's time for them to lose another publisher. Hit them where it hurts.

YS8 has enemy level scaling?

Please don't tell me that a level 1 monster's gonna be more powerful than a level 20 monster without level scaling with same level party members have. I don't remember that being the case in the older ys titles and seven.

I had some very bad experience in the past with rpg games and level scaling, borderlands comes right into my mind right now.

9c2bae No.14662689

>>14662594

Most people's experiences with level scaling is bad.

Level scaling is, outside of a few specific applications, a facet of lazy game design. Borderlands, Goyrim, Fallout 4, etc.

They don't want to create an original, challenging game so they just have enemies level with you so the game's enemies are "never obsolete".

What they don't do is balance anything for level scaling.

I honestly don't think Duvalie changing sides will be planned. She was never a loyal member. She said it herself: she doesn't have the darkness in her that it requires. She followed Arianrhod because she seemed like the epitome of justice and virtue, which mattered to her a lot after the murder of her family. However, the events of CS3, especially the ending, seem to have shaken her faith in who she works for. So I fully expect Duvalie's side change to be completely genuine and I also think Arianrhod will be proud of her for doing so, but she probably won't say that until close to the end.

This is an anecdotal so take it as you will. I downloaded the first CODEX release and have spent around 50 hours on it. Haven't had the game crash on me once when I was in gameplay but it did freeze when I skipped an event(cutscene) too quickly. On ng+ now and honestly it's playable, at least for me. The frame rate varies depending on the level but boss fights are smooth. I have a pretty outdated computer (r9 280, amd 8320) and running it with all the graphic options turned off. Probably the single worst thing I have encountered is the sky flickering but it happens in 1 or 2 levels.

I'd say download it, see how it runs on the ship and in the tutorial boss if it doesn't want to work then don't bother.

I'll give you a rough translation and cut out the parts that don't matter

>The much-delayed PC version of "Ys VIII" has finally been released. However, users have reported a series of glitches and poor optimization.

>NISA, a US subsidiary of Nippon Ichi Software, released the PC version of Action RPG "Ys VIII - Lacrimosa of DANA -" on Steam at the 17th of April at $60.

>The PC version was originally planned to be released last September, but the optimization was more difficult than anticipated and had to be repeatedly delayed. The port has finally been released, but as of this article being posted the Steam reviews are over 75% negative. Many of the reviews complain of a lack of optimization.

Wow, it's literally crashed every single time chapter 1 started.
Good job NISA. I hope Falcom goes back to XSeed pic.twitter.com/u9fquzNE2P
— Stolken (@TheStolken) April 16, 2018

>It suffers from many problems, but one of the most common complaints are the frequent crashes. One user reports that the game crashes every time after beating the prologue, similar complaints are made throughout other reviews. There are apparently many points where the game crashes.

>NISA know of the issues and have said they are working on solutions. For a temporary fix until the game is patched, change the controller support for your choice of controller from the Steam client. It's believed this postpone crashing at the beginning of the game, but with a decrease in FPS. Several users have said that crashing can be reduced by changing shadow rendering and other settings.

>NISA acknowledges the errors users have reported on the Steam forums and stated their future solutions. They said the problem is with VSync and it will be fixed withing the next 48 hours, they will attempt to fix the issues such as controller-related crashes, screen flickering and shadow rendering errors. They also said they will fix audio problems, the fullscreen option and issues related to text.

There's a bit more but it doesn't matter much, just talking about how the issues came from the PS4 architecture being so different and how users are comparing this to Dark Souls' original PC port.

The whole deal with Shura is just working off it's meaning. Loewe reached "enlightenment" in the sense that he adopted the attitude of Shura, but the meaning and word don't make any sense in English, and he explains his mentality through SC as well.

XSEED made a good choice, because adding some weird term that's never going to be shown again, and only really works for Loewe would just make people confused and overthinking things. It literally never shows up ever again after SC; the whole Shura thing is a state of mind, and fits in with Loewe's new perception of the world. If you want to add a term that will only be there to confuse people when it's in reference to Loewe's change in his attitude, it makes no sense. The only reference is that Arianrhod mentions in Loewe Monogatari that "Shura" has been reborn, but that's also in reference to Loewe's change in attitude, after taking the mantle of an Enforcer. Read up on the definition of Shura, and you'll see it fits well with his changes.

And yeah, that new TL is quite weak. The one from your pic was much better, too bad it's incomplete.

I hate these "patience battles" in games where you're basically left just jerking off until he reveals his weak point for a few seconds where you have to take a few little potshots and then wait again Who thought this was a good boss fight when the past game and a half have been pretty fast paced? I remember reading the localization blogs that Tom seemed really passionate about this game; he called it his most favorite to translate, ever so I'm pretty surprised to hear and see this. Did anyone translate the original text for those lines so we could compare how fucked it was? Seems a large part of the game is the humorous and light-hearted tone of it.

>… really can’t stress enough how much fun it was to write for these characters, and how inspired I was to come up with the perfect phrasing for every line. I’m extremely appreciative that we chose to translate the game in-house, as it gave me an opportunity to work much more deeply with this script than I ever could’ve if we’d only been tasked with editing it. As time went on, I found myself revising my work on a daily basis, making small tweaks here and there as new bits of wordplay or better puns popped into my head (much to Matt’s chagrin, I’m sure!). The end result is something that I can stand behind as a faithful interpretation of the game’s mood and intent – an attempt to convey the same degree of lighthearted fun and irreverence present in every line of the Japanese script, but formatted to sound more natural in English, accounting for context, tone, atmosphere, and individual character quirks rather than just hammering out a word-for-word translation.

>I’ve never laughed so hard while playing a JRPG before, and I truly hope that when you guys play this one in English, you’ll find its English interpretation just as hilarious as I found its original Japanese to be. That would mean I succeeded at what I set out to do, and would bring me great joy and pride as a localizer!

It's not the puns that bother me, it's just the memes, because that fucking "don't ever talk to me or my son again" thing is an old goddamned meme. I don't want any memes in my games, new or old.

That's not a good enough excuse in my opinion. The only time a meme should even be considered is in place of another meme, and even then that's iffy in my opinion. That or present in easter eggs or some bullshit, nothing that interferes with the game.

I wish I could see the original text for that joke, I could partially forgive them if it was at least still relevant towards the actual dialogue

Yeah so far I am now ~2 hours in. Pokkle (or whatever his name is I changed it) just makes puns out of everything. The chick basically talks like normal. They don't really feel forced if you ask me and it contributes to their character. If the puns/jokes are out of character, then I'd have an issue, but overall it seems alright. I really enjoy the artstyle, music, and general feel of the game. Feels very chill. The characters talk like they're actually siblings. If you're expecting the game to be ultra serious, you might run into some issues with it though.

In general translating anything into a meme, regardless of if it was a meme-type joke or not prior, leaves a bad taste in people's mouths because, frequently, other localization outfits have inserted memes where they don't belong to the detriment of the story and use them as a crutch because they're shit at their jobs. and the faggots will eat memeshit up

I think as long as you are maintaining the joke type and subject as much as you can as you can it's not the worst possible thing.

The issue arises when a localizer sees a joke or a particular character type and sees it as free reign to turn the entire game into meme-central or reference (((current events))) and, in addition to releasing a shit localization, causing the game to age rapidly due to the nature of memes.

134644 No.14699714

If you want NISA to change you need to contact NIS directly. Because it looks like Japan is believing what western MSM and localizers are telling them.

Gaming got worse because you didn't make yourself heard.

Are you gonna lose your fanservice? Your non-left leaning stories? Japanese games stop getting translated or sold on the west because they just don't sell?

Make your voice heard. Send an email to your favorite Japanese dev and explain- even in broken Japanese.

Right now.

The angry emails is exactly what I mean.

Very few will drop their localizers on emails alone. But when those localizers have to fix their own mess (and don't know how) they'll trip over themselves and fail.

It is impossible for localization to fix itself- only by becoming translation (hiring people who understand the language, culture, and games). So instead, it's likely multiple instances where a company got angry emails will result in it shuttering. If NISA or Crunchyroll lost 99.9% of their staff, and hired people who actually knew what they were doing, I'd be happy (once they showed they could do it correctly & consistently). But it's far more likely those companies will just implode once no one in Japan will give them business.

If you let them slowly crash and burn naturally (assuming they don't just keep lying to Japan just enough to repackage anything and sell it to normalfags and SJWeebs who use them as conversation points to make people believe they aren't fake), there is a risk that they'll burn down your favorite titles if you never get heard.

> I guess the west just doesn't like these games/anime, lets not bother doing translation of any kind.

You won't get jack shit, except children's games & anime, since that'll be the only thing not deemed "offensive" as localizers move the goal-posts.

GG forced the left to overplay its hand so everyone understood what they were doing with Trump better. Forcing your opponent to move first and over commit leaves them nothing once everyone knows their song & dance.

There is nothing to lose by sending an email except 5/10 minutes of your own time. What happened with Falcom should be the standard every time NISA or any other localization house screws up.

I'd like there to be a team of people constantly emailing Jap companies the fuck-ups of the past, but it won't have as much weight. Instead you have to wait until a fuck-up happens, then attach all that localizer's dirty laundry in one email, as well as kicking up a stink online/social media.

tl;dr - Wait & watching them burn might not kill them, and stop games you really want coming across.

Throwing gas on the fire almost guarantees their death, gives Japan a little more clarity, and is fun to watch.

You're pretty much correct on every point.

Come to think of it, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to send Falcom another email on this one, since its another huge fuck up on their part. Just didn't come to mind; reminders like this are always helpful, I'll see what I can do.

22ed8c No.14700978

>>14700963

No reason not to. Think about their response to fixing their errors- it's taking weeks, and they are breaking more shit as they try to fix it.

If your car took ages to fix, and the mechanic said he "found" new problems, as you can see his underlings throwing their hands up in despair as they just did something wrong, you'd demand better.

If your meal came up wrong, and you heard the kitchen staff in upheaval because they kept fucking up the meal you actually ordered, you'd demand better.

If a movie theater had the reel break, and the guy in the projection booth kept hooking up the wrong films and took ages to do it, you'd demand better.

Western AAA have tried to push the idea of "fix it after it's out", but this is the first time in a long time a dev has truly listened and tried to solve the problem.

Just don't be rude to Falcom. Be sympathetic, understanding, and concerned. After all, they didn't directly hire the morons behind this.

I think Tom may have gone overboard with puns solely to make villagers' complaints about Pokkle as justified as the original script suggests (but doesn't quite support), but that's the only grey area I can think of. And Pokkle busting out the occasional meme makes sense for the localization and for the worldbuilding too, since he reads whatever comes to Arges off the aeroplane.

Also, I'm glad they fixed Zwei!! by making it compatible with modern computers + bunch of QoL improvements, the 2001 version was DirectX 5 and it was super unstable, even moreso than Falcom's pre-2000 Windows games. I also found the official translation to be slightly better than the fan translation beta. Adding a choice for the PSP soundtrack is cool too, even though I don't really care about those arranges.

I hope this happens because I hate white people being interested in Japanese/Asian media exports

Do you know what the word "basic" implies?

Do you know what the phrase "not necessarily" implies? Do you even comprehend English? How could you read those words and believe I was strictly saying it had one meaning unless you don't even know English.

You're absolutely full of shit. 閃 translates perfectly well as "flash". One of the meanings of the English word "flash" is even "the glint of a reflective surface", assuming it is meant to refer to the glint of metal weapons. The actual basic meaning of 閃 is for light to shine for a brief moment, it doesn't matter whether the light comes from the glint of a blade or from lightning. Here are some title translations that actually retain the meaning of the Japanese.

Flashing Trails

Glinting Trails

Trails of Fleeting Light

Trails of Momentary Illumination

Trails of Ephemeral Light

Trails of Transitory Light

I don't give a fuck what Falcom approved. Nintendo approved all kinds of shitty changes in Fire Emblem Fates, does that somehow validate them? I bet you think censorship isn't censorship as look as the Western branch of the company proposes it and the Nip parent company accepts it due to marketing considerations.

>illuminating the darkness of the empire with a flash of the sword

>this somehow justifies arbitrarily changing the title to Trails of Cold Steel

Nope. Nope.

Okay, but so what? So every title should be changed to make it "sound cooler" for normalfags? Should every line of dialogue be changed Vic Ireland style to "sound cooler" too? Where does it end?

>>14706037

>one of the many different meaning of 閃 is "cold steel"

Are you fucking retarded? And so what if the Jap companies approved it? Jap companies approve arbitrary changes all the time. "Trails of Cold Steel" is nothing but an arbitrary change for marketing purposes because some cunt thought that a closer translation of the original title wouldn't sound cool enough in English for normalfags. Well, fuck normalfags.

Because the ending of the game is extremely bittersweet. It says a lot that CS2 has the happiest ending of the three CS games released so far.

anon I'm curious, have you played any Falcom games?

This is literally the least important thing out of anything to be fucking talking about in a Falcom thread ever when you could actually be talking about something of value to the games

Also your suggestions are shit except maybe trails of fleeting light which is still meh at best

>Nintendo approved all kinds of shitty changes in Fire Emblem Fates, does that somehow validate them? I bet you think censorship isn't censorship as look as the Western branch of the company proposes it and the Nip parent company accepts it due to marketing considerations.

Where's your proofs that Ninty of Japan approved anything and didn't just let NoA do whatever the fuck they want, since they're a large branch with some degree of autonomy?

This is literally directly from the Falcom president's mouth; they have no other branches elsewhere.

>name sounds appealing to normalfags

nigger, where did normalfags get mentioned anywhere?

At this point you're spouting buzzwords without any consideration for anything. If a name sounds better it sounds better.

>but so what

lol nice argument

Why are you fucking in this thread? You have better uses for your time like talking about the fucking games

>Why are you fucking in this thread?

Isn't it obvious? To shit on XSeed. He's said absolutely nothing about Falcom games other than what he can cherry pick for that specific purpose. He's not here because he likes Falcom, he's here because he hates XSeed. Either way, he's a waste of time. If he shows up in the next thread just ignore him. He has no intention of engaging in any actual discourse. You see his kind on cuckchan all the time. It's highly likely he's here because their idiot data thieving nip keeps fucking their site and he can't get his shitposting fix on the cuck/vg/ Falcom thread.

I just finished Ys SEVEN and currently playing Ys I. So I'm guessing that you got to be cautious around blue haired girls in this series, right?

I appreciate your ability to cause me to care enough to point this out but I feel like your attempts to create crossthread drama is more than a bit obnoxious.

I suppose I could have just used a VPN to get a new ID specifically to sperg but you're somehow seeing any criticism of this thread and/or XSEED as one person when it really isn't.
