DON'T FORGET TO SUPPORT THE GAMES, BUT DON'T FALL FOR THE NISA BULLSHIT
>Latest News
- After an email campaign, a retranslation, apologies, and 7 months of delays, Ys 8 finally got released on PC. And NISA fucked up, the port is so terrible that only 25% of the Steam reviews being positive. Western and Japanese websites are reporting this story. In other words, a huge backlash. Meanwhile, NISA promised to fix everything. Don't worry, they'll probably be able to fix in a few weeks what they couldn't fix in 1.5 years. Absolutely. Ha.
- Trails of Cold Steel I & II is now on PC through Steam and GOG with gameplay enhancements and newly voiced lines of dialogue.
- Ys Seven ported to PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store
- Ys: Memories of Celceta ported to PC by XSEED, coming this summer
- Zwei!! and Zwei II are finally released on PC by XSEED, available now on Steam/GOG/Humble Store
- Tokyo Xanadu released on PS4/PC with an improved translation, but there are a few issues like slangs, memes and random chtulhu lines.
- Also available on PC: the Trails in the Sky trilogy (now with Turbo mode), Xanadu Next, Ys: I & II Chronicles, Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana and Ys Origin.
- Trails of Cold Steel 4: The End of Saga to release in the fall of 2018 in Japan.
- XSEED's E3 2018's line-up includes a "PC/PS4/PS4 Pro RPG".

So I don't usually follow these threads but I really like pirating Ys games. I recall seeing that there was once a fan retranslation project for Ys 8 but that stopped when NISA said they were going to "fix" everything for the PC port. Is there any word on this project continuing now that the PC release was botched? What I'm basically asking is: Is there any chance I'll be able to play a decent PC version of Ys 8 with a translation that isn't fucked?

Sky can get rather autistic with orbment usage towards the end but the gameplay is certainly good for having movement and positioning actually be useful, the effects that come up on the turn order chart mean you can't simply spam through shit, especially in later games.
Honestly considering how much there is to talk about your better off watching a few videos, my above rambling is useless, you probably won't get too spoiled.
>Does the story ever get interesting, or is it just something you have to get through?
In the sky games in generally just gets increasingly more intersting, albeit seems more simplistic, plotwise, although in retrospect they aren't, at the start. Cold Steel 1 has an abysmally cliched start, although the incident is over in >1hour

I use a guide because Japanese game devs are quite autistic when it comes to hidden events. It depends on how you use the guide if you ask me. I usually only retroactively read the guide after a segment, and decide if reloading and replaying is worth the hassle. I actually enjoyed most of the combat during SC, so doing max Bracer rank didn't feel too bad.
Also, you can't get rid of autism, you are stuck with it forever.

The game starts out well enough, but I think by the second or third chapter, you’ll start to see instances of the characters using “hella” and “fukkleducks”. I honestly didn’t drop the game because of the word choices Aksys decided to use. I dropped it because it was really bland. Like, it has the Zwei style of combat but not the charm combined with a lesser Trails story. I played on Hard and it was like playing on easy with how telegraphed the bosses were. The dungeons aren’t special and you’ll be going through these same bland dungeons a few times in order to get materials to upgrade your gear.
In short, the game has more problems than Aksys’ “spice” in my opinion.

Part of Cold Steel's problem may be having too many characters from the get go, causing none of them to get the full development and time they deserve. Honestly, going by plot relevance, you could easily cut Elliot, Laura, and Fie from Class VII and have little effect.
Fie's Jaeger angle can be done by Sara, there's nothing Laura adds to the Class that couldn't be/isn't done by Jusis and Rean, and Elliot's always just been kind of there. Emma's already there to test orbal staffs, so he doesn't even just have the excuse of introducing a new weapon.
Speaking of Emma, you could probably write her out too. Yeah she's a witch and role should have plot relevance, but it literally has no bearing on the plot before or after she reveals it.
I like Cold Steel well enough, but it has a very flawed story that I hope upswings in 3.
371b78 No.14741850
>>14741695
You're partially right, but Fie is way more relevant than Machias, who only serves as a crude example of the class conflict and loses all relevance after chapter 2 of CS1. Fie, by comparison, has direct ties to several major players in CS2 and CS3 while Elliot and Machias are basically reduced to being thrown in as leftovers in the big rival matchups at the climax of CS3. Laura flirts with becoming relevant several times but can't seem to quite do it, though she at least kind of has some connections to a large player on the villain team. Gaius was completely irrelevant…until he wasn't when he shows up in CS3.
You're right about the size, though. This is part of the reason NuC7 works so well. It's a much smaller group so they all have time to shine. I thought I was going to hate Thors II with a fiery passion for retreading old ground, but I ended up loving the whole school and Leeves way more than I did in the first two games.

>Fie is way more relevant than Machias, who only serves as a crude example of the class conflict and loses all relevance after chapter 2 of CS1.
At least he does serve the purpose of that example, but I agree that he's such an egregious asshole it comes off as heavy handed and makes the nobility look better. Which would've really been an interesting angle to the whole conflict by the time the Civil War came, but no, the Noble Alliance are just bad guys.
>Fie, by comparison, has direct ties to several major players in CS2 and CS3
I can't say anything about 3, but in 2 her connection to them does nothing for the story. It's just kind of a "Oh hey guys." "Hey Fie, sorry but we gotta fight ya." "And also kill that black haired heartbreaker over there. "Sorry guys, this is muh new fam." Like Laura being from Legram, it doesn't really do much. At least Machias represented a side in a conflict and his status as Governor Regnitz's son moved the plot(that one time before he gained Clark Kent's mastery of disguise).
>Gaius was completely irrelevant…until he wasn't when he shows up in CS3
Gaius is… part of the problem with Cold Steel's writing, where I feel more effort was put toward hinting at things and setting Chekhov's Guns to be fired later rather than actually doing something with itself. Hell, the climax of CS2(the Vermillion Apocalypse) never really felt like a resolution, but a set up for something else to me. Emma was definetly this, and Gaius FEELS like he's this, but I don't know for what. I get the feeling he's a Gralsritter, but if so, he's poorly handled, compared to Kevin.
Admittedly, Gaius never had much going on openly outside of Nord… which fits. Gaius wants to protect his homeland. From his education, he felt that Erebonia and Nord were inextricably tied, and that any conflict of Erebonia's would bleed into Nord. So he enrolled at Thors to learn about Erebonia, to observe it, and try to find out what problems may come to Nord's door and mitigate/prepare for them. He also wants to give himself a connection to the Empire so he feels like it's worth fighting for. Sadly, Falcom translated this to him simply staying in the back and observing which, while fitting, isn't interesting to the player. He's not even a big brother stable "rock" type, he's just sort of there, until Nord comes up, when he's REALLY there. Because that's all he really cares about. Even if it was done poorly, it's still SOMETHING.
Really, it feels like CS I and II were written so they could set things up for CS3 and 4. Tell me, people who know spoilers, does it feel like the series could've started at III and lost nothing?

Let me rewrite this to show you my opinion on the matter:
<Really, it feels like Trails in the Sky FC was written so they could set things up for SC. Tell me, people who know spoilers, does it feel like the series could've started at SC and lost nothing?
In short: no. The stuff in CS3 works because you have that bedrock. Just like with SC, it's far more interesting and emotionally powerful game…but it only has that power because of the foundation built by the yeoman work of the set up game, or games in this instance. Make no mistake, CS1 and CS2 are basically the first game in an arc. They are FC, basically, just stretched out more. CS3, while featuring new characters in leading roles, still relies heavily on the already established characters and story events to work.
So no…it wouldn't work to start the story there. For better or worse, this is the way Trails tells stories.
For what it's worth I actually think every OG C7 member has something interesting to do in CS4 coming up due to the way things have shaken out, at least to the point where I'm glad they are in the plot. Even Elliot and Machias are going to have a bit of conflict, which they've completely lacked since CS1. So honestly I do think things will end up working out, but like always Trails is playing the long game. The really long game in this case.
bd4aa4 No.14742105

>Really, it feels like Trails in the Sky FC was written so they could set things up for SC.
What the fuck? No it's not. While yes, there's a lot of stuff set up that paid off in SC, FC set up and accomplished its own story in a way that felt much more whole. Each character had their own thing that was going that wasn't hidden for reasons that felt like "so we can set this thing up later". Like Kloe being Klaudia, Olivier being Olivert, these identity reveals don't feel like Emma being a witch where "until my reveal, I'll just do and be nothing". FC's questions and mysteries were set up far more naturally than Cold Steel I and II.
I'm rambling, but what I'm trying to say is that FC was a strong product on its own, and didn't need SC to redeem it, like I feel CS I and II need. SC is most certainly enhanced by playing FC. I asked because from what little I know of 3, it seems almost as if it could serve as an entry point, where SC doesn't.
Before you
>seems like an entry point
>has 3 in the title
I consider this different because 3 is not only the first game on a new console, but stars a new Class VII in a new school as well, so you have an easy way to explain shit to newcomers.

like the huge cliffhangers it just threw at the end and all the mysteries that it was establishing as you reached the climax of FC's story?
I'm failing to see what even would be wrong with FC being written so they could set things up for SC, its literally just the second chapter of the story in my eyes.
>SC is most certainly enhanced by playing FC
I'd argue its flat-out necessary before playing, or else you end up with shitheads like the ones you see at venturebeat playing these games who have no idea what's going on, who anyone is, what the stories for the world are, and just… everything.
> but what I'm trying to say is that FC was a strong product on its own, and didn't need SC to redeem it
FC was fine in my eyes but it flat-out needed SC because its a direct continuation of the story because of the aforementioned cliffhangers, mysteries and incomplete character storylines. Sure FC had an "ending" to the main conflict going on, but its abundantly clear that the entire main conflict was pretty much just a facet/part of the true conflict that was shown in SC and revealed piecemeal and through mystery in FC and there is even more shit I don't even know about involving ouroboros and the anguis and whatnot that never got answered even after finishing the TitS trilogy
I might be confusing your points however and I'm just entering this conversation half-blind as I have yet to play the cold steel games and am hiding posts rampantly to avoid spoilers
771889 No.14742163
I believe that CS3 shows exactly what Falcom had in mind with the school setting, but were probably too tempted to create a huge class in CS1. They could have done like in FC, where characters are connected to a certain location. Reduce the size of the class to 6, and have a total of 3 party members at the start of the field studies. Have the final party member(s) show up during the field study. The temporary party members return during the final chapter (school festival) and can be used during the final dungeon.
This would probably work better because you don't end up with Gaius who is just a Nord, who likes Nord. He could have been a guide during the Nord field study instead. He could even have become a squire under Barkhorn, without the player knowing it, which could easily be explained during CS3.

You do know that FC and SC where originally a single game that eventually got split in development, right? So, yes…there is very much precedent for saying FC isn't as effective without SC. If I only played FC I would be vastly unsatisfied. Even setting aside the blatant cliffhanger, most of the cast are unexplored in FC and don't get much interesting meat added to their characters until SC. Schera is just a big sister mentor, Olivier is… something to do with Erebonia, but we don't know what other than he's hiding something, Kloe is one of the few who gets a little development in FC, but even she gets more later, Agate's past is completely relegated to the second game as is Zin's. FC is all about future payoffs. So no, I don't think FC stands on its own very well at all. You can argue that you think it's a better setup game, which is fine. I'd even agree. But that doesn't change the fact that I still think it's an extremely incomplete experience without it's second half.

FC stands on its own two feet without the need of SC, it has its own self-contained story and it's a great example of worldbuilding and good writing. The ending is just there to hook people to the next game, if you get rid of it, it would still be its own thing. Even the 3rd does that. The only Trails game that won't do that will be the last one.

And I still disagree. That post doesn't address anything I brought up in regards to how much is left to the second game. Calling the story self contained is a pretty big stretch as many of the elements that made the story possible, such as how every chapter involves brainwashed people doing most of the crimes, is only explained by the sequel hook. The majority of the supporting cast is given no depth or backstory since it's, again, saved for the next game. Joshua's past, a mystery set up from the very first cutscene of FC, is itself a sequel hook. It's true you resolve a plotpoint, but the confrontation with the main villain instantly raises another in it's place even before you put down the final boss.
There's way too many outstanding mysteries about the world and characters to call FC a satisfying stand alone story. And that's not even counting the cliffhanger, which, let's face it, should be counted because it pretty much confirms what my point is: FC was never meant to stand on it's own. You were always supposed to play both games because they were envisioned as one in the first place. The same is true for CS, just on a much, much wider scale.
I'm not saying CS couldn't have been pruned a bit. It's pretty obvious the first two games have some unnecessary bloat, especially in CS2. However I'm not comfortable calling entire characters moribund until I see the end of the story. Like I said, all of OG Class 7 have potentially interesting hooks in the finale and I won't write any of them off until the story is over and I see whether they delivered on them or not.
You asked the opinion of anons who have played CS3 if we think CS1 and CS2 are necessary. I maintain it is, for the same reason that FC is necessary to enjoy SC to it's fullest. You simply won't be affected the same way otherwise

I assume "Ugh… But I have no idea what you're talking about" or something like that is how NISA translated it. They had to go and give that kid an attitude problem when he didn't have one before.
We can probably safely assume that when they translated it, the translators entered the translated lines directly above the originals in a file somewhere, and that when reinserting the English script into the game, they somehow left the Japanese line in there too by mistake. Which would seem to imply they have somebody manually adding and deleting those lines instead of automatically doing it with a program.

I just finished cold steel 2, and I found some pretty massive cheese builds. For example, I had Machias run silver bell + that one master quartz with 12ep regen per turn/ 75% spell dodge/ silver bell effect + cast time quartz. Having him use chrono-burst -> burst drive -> analyze would let him make the whole team move when he did, and he would have the movement delay of a double silver belled analyze (which was 4 units for me 1 to cast 3 delay). Tauros on Rean worked really well with spirit unification, and he could pretty easily pump out 60k damage a turn. I set fie up with 100% evasion, counters are always crits quartz, and had her use the chevalier master quartz(increased phys damage on low life and enemies target you more frequently). Lowering her life to 10% (with peculiar tomato soup I think) and putting her up front was pretty great. She had the ability to counter over a really large range, her counter did about 10k damage, it allowed a linked attack, and it built some easy cp for her and whoever she linked with. Also, I made Gaius wear the master quartz that heals 20%hp/2%mp of the damage you deal, and then equipped all the mp cuts and increased strength quartz I had. He could sustain an infinite chain of chrono-burst to wild rage x 2 to s-craft even on a single target eventually. The characters not in class seven seem even more easy to break: that 50% cast time reduction on Toval is pretty crazy, princess Alfin's buff looked pretty strong, and Sharon's tea time is just asking to be paired up with Alisa's blessed arrow for infinite cp generation.
For how brokenly strong the characters can get, it really annoys me that there is so much scripted weakness. Going from a battle where Gaius stops time and spams 50 s-crafts on Duvalie to a cutscene where he says "She's so fast", I can't help but feel he's being sarcastic or something. I'm fine with occasionally running into a scripted defeat, but they over did it in my opinion. I really got sick of the template of: run into a strong foe, try to fight it, lose, be saved by a passerby. The ones I can think of off the top of my head: Magic Knight at the start, Fie's jaeger friends at Gurrelia Fortress, McBurn and Duvalie when Sara comes back, and So many times during the infernal castle. That and the fact that bosses pretty much always escape (shown as them leaving you alone because they got bored) when you do win, gives the impression that class 7 is grossly incompetent. It's been a while since I played Cold Steel 1, but I remember getting kind of annoyed with the cutscenes of the imperial liberation front saying "All is going according to plan." every time they get seriously fucked over. I like the gameplay, world, and political setting, but I really don't think the storytelling style they use is for me. I'm still enjoying them a lot regardless, and I hope we can get 3 and 4 translated sometime before 2020.

CS2 has about a hundred different ways to break the game. Which in itself can be fun, even if it takes away from the challenge. I did a Rebellion Jusis build, which could kill any regular encounter in the final dungeon before they could attack me. Katze can also be pretty cheesy against McBurn when you block all of his regular attacks.
During TitS you were beating the big bad guys in the final dungeon of SC. But since CS2 was always supposed to be part of CS1, and only became its own game due to development issues, CS2 storywise isn't supposed to be a point where class 7 can beat the big bad guys. CS3, which was supposed to be CS2, is the point where you can and will beat them.

CS1 was not drawn out, the issue with it is that there was too much. They even cut the Ymir field study, which is mentioned during CS2. However, there wasn't enough to create 2 full games. I would say that it is noticeable in CS2. The Courageous is introduced in CS1 but never used until CS2. There are a bunch of filler quests with no story relevance, and with little to no character development. And retracing dungeons to gather resources. If you skip all side quests CS2 becomes a fairly short game. And if they didn't make you go inside the temples multiple times, then it would have been even shorter.

I fully agree. I find learning Japanese a bit daunting (especially for a game like Trails), however, I understand basic words and Japanese habits enough to interpreter meaning with Japanese voice acting and simple English subs. I don't need translators to interpreter everything for me, or localize certain lines completely. It is especially jarring when they try to make it more western.

This is a common storytelling pitfall on a lot of Japanese media nowadays.
>The heroes win because they must
>Somehow the villains still don't lose because they can't
>Everything resets until the next arc
The problem is that it seems people seem to like this style considering how popular works that overuse this trope are (eg. My Hero Academia). I understand this became popular because people were tired of the "Always a Bigger Fish" of old shonen, but you can create narrative structures outside of these.
A great example would be any Suikoden, most notably II and V, where there are definite setbacks for both heroes and villains and they matter, they have lasting consequences. I wish we could have more of that instead of always being the single track ride of weird stalemates that CS1 and 2 end up feeling like.

Also depending on who you choose it ends up more platonic than romantic. Millium for example, is a little sister type rather than having a straight up romantic scene. Most of the girls Rean's age has a romantic scene.
The princess just says she wants a threesome with Rean and his sister in lots or roundabout words.
AFAIK you can even choose not to have a final scene with anyone, and Rean just gets a short one by himself.
>>14802180
>>14802275
I really love CS2 despite all the dislike the Cold Steel series gets. If you look deeper into it you'll realize that Rean's life is fucked, and CS2 is him doing the best he can to attempt to regain some normalcy.
CS2 spoilers It fails and he gets fucked beyond belief. He ends up giving up and giving in at the end, not knowing what to. This is shown explicitly in the final scenes of CS2 where other characters decide what to do with their futures while Rean gives up and stays with Thors.
Rean's a really interesting character in that things keep happening to him but all he wants is to live normally. But he wants to be normal to the point where he doesn't stand out. At first keeps people at arm's length, doesn't join any clubs, keeps his ogre side hidden, constantly downplays himself and his skills etc. The universe has other plans for him though. He's like the opposite of Estelle. Estelle embraces herself and her abilities, Rean does not.

Rean is a good character in the sense that he develops, and in the case of CS2 then also reverts when he is faced with a problem he can not solve. It makes it seem more real, especially considering what he has been through.
I also think that the hate for Cold Steel is due to it being more anime than previous games, even if Crossbell was getting pretty close in that sense. A lot of western "fans" weren't comfortable with that. Probably because they find it embarrassing, or because they are goons.

Sure, he wants to see his country and what it has to offer, but he ultimately just wants to figure out who he is most of all in quiet way. You nailed it on the head that he's the opposite of Estelle, a girl who wants to actively see the world and show the world what she can do instead of living in the shadow of her father. Rean, on the other hand, doesn't. He doesn't want all the labels people keep throwing at him. He didn't want to be the leader of Class VII at first, he didn't want to be labeled as the Ashen Chevalier, he didn't want to be labeled a noble, he didn't want to end up joining Osborne, he wants to protect his country, but doesn't want the fanfare that goes with it. He's a lost boy who had his identity stripped away from him from a very early age. Not knowing who, what, or why he is. Osborne really fucked him up, but in a way, so did the Baron and his wife for seemingly not caring about helping him answer these questions. Or, maybe they did and he was just too prideful. He ran off to Thors in order to find himself, but couldn't. That's why he joins up with a branch of Thors in order to still learn who he is while teaching the next generation who they are.
I'm unsure why most people think Rean is the weakest protagonist. Maybe they just don't want to think too much and use what >>14804469 is talking about, in regards to the school setting and how anime it is, in order to discredit him as a character.

Millium jokes about romantic stuff with Rean, but it's unclear how serious she's being. CS3 starts pushing her hard with Jusis.

That's the biggest thing about Rean. At the start of the series, Rean left Ymir to find a place for himself, but also to put his family at arm's length. They know about his ogre side, his sister knows, he fears them treating him differently, as something other than just their son. They're generally not at fault for anything, it's Rean pushing them away.
He dislikes the idea of being a noble, and sees his existence as the cause of his father pulling out of noble gatherings.
He keeps his being a noble via adoption a secret from everyone because he doesn't want to be seen as special. He doesn't join a club for the same reason. He can play the guitar, so he'd be good in the music club. He can also fight, so there's fencing. And he's athletic, so he'd be something in swimming. He's also a noble so he took part in horseback riding at least once.
Sara attempts to get him to stop thinking this way which is why she pushes him as the leader of Class VII, and then assigns him to helping out the student council. That's all innocent and probably would've helped him if nothing more started happening.
Anytime Rean strives for normalcy, the universe kicks him in the teeth. He didn't want to be the leader of Class VII, but gets pushed into it anyway. He didn't want to cross the country and stop terrorists, but he had to do it anyway, because terrorist attacks would disrupt his attempts a living normally (except by them just appearing, they make an impact).
And then when things finally get back to normal. When he thought he was finally just going to continue a normal life in a place he found himself fitting into and belonging to (Thors and Class VII), shit hits the fan. Rean already has to deal with how others will perceive his ogre side, but now he has to accept ANOTHER power that makes him the special outsider: Valimar.
What makes it worse is that even though he accepted Valimar he fails, Thors is taken, his friends' fates are unknown and he is flying off, and in his mind, abandoning them all to die or be destroyed; his one place where he felt he could be normal
This is why he's so desperate and frustrated at the very beginning of CS2, and it only worsens as he realizes that it's been a month.
CS2 is him trying to fight for that normalcy back. His main goals throughout the game are reuniting with his friends and retaking his "home", Thors. But again, the universe has other plans for him, placing him as the leader once more and the leader of a group that fast becomes a major player in the civil war. His use of Valimar as a trump card is played up.
What makes it worse for him is that throughout CS2 he starts to accept himself more and more, gaining a modicum of control over his ogre side, and comes to terms with using Valimar more and more (basically implied by their sync rate). And then all that is reset to 0 when at the end it's revealed that Osborne is still alive and that he is Osborne's son. This results in him rejecting himself even more. Not only that, but his ties to Valimar basically ensures that he will no longer have a normal life. Osborne takes full advantage of his good nature, forcing him to join in the war with Crossbell in order to quickly take it over with little casualty, and he earns the title of the Ashen Chevalier, which he does not want. All his friends move on from Thors, leaving him behind. The place he belonged to is now his prison. The people he loved are all gone, and now he's alone in his misery.
I'd also like to point out that Emma at the end of CS2 is the only one who leaves with her end goal being to support and help Rean. She never took her duty seriously before, so she leaves in an attempt to learn more about Valimar and her duty, so that she could return and stand by him, supporting him fully. Everyone else leaves to pursue their own goals that's separate from Rean.

I agree completely. I can't say much for Lloyd since I haven't played his games, and I adore Kevin's, Estelle's and Joshua's journeys, but my lord Falcom is doing extremely well with Rean and I'm waiting with bated breath on how they're going to close out his story. Please just let this poor boy have a happy life. He deserves it at this point.

I only played Zero but as far as I can remember, Lloyd didn't have much of an impact on me. He's very much the good, noble hero, but doesn't have the same boisterousness and energy as Estelle, or the flaws and the ire of the universe that Rean has.
I think my favourite thing about him is how he looks when he's drawn by Enami Katsumi, but that's just because I like the artist's work in general.
The thing I envy most is that he gets to stare at Rixia's ass all day.
