Mabinogi is one of those few MMOs that did it right by not following in WoW's footsteps. This private server is a version of that game before Nexon came in and fucked that all up. Here is just some of what this game has to offer:

Some things to be aware of when playing on this server:

The wiki is up-to-date for the official Mabinogi Servers. This server is very behind in terms of content. The wiki is still largely useful; you get the best information by setting its history date to March 2011, or as close to there as you can get. That will give you proper quest details and skill information, though some esoteric information may differ due to the server version being JP instead of NA. You may want to read the Japanese wiki instead, and there are still some discrepancies from this server having changes made.
>which race should I play?
any is fine, including elven scum, but make a human to start out. A human can travel to a leader of the other races for an extra character slot of that race, but you can't get a human character if you start out with a giant or elf. It's useful as a mule if you don't want to play a human.
>I want to play melee
Grind out the Windmill skill to Rank 1 before other skills. Skills give Combat Power (CP) as you rank them up, and Windmill requires you to kill with it a lot of mobs with considerably higher CP than you at higher ranks, which means if you rank up too many skills, it'll become next to impossible to rank up Windmill. http://mabinoger.com/monster_cp.htm lets you find out which monsters meet the strong/awful/boss upto G14. You can find out your own CP from one of the approved mods for this server; you can get it from the resources wordpress. The game starts you off with some ranks in some skills, so speak with Duncan in Tir Chonaill to derank your skills, as long as your total level is under 100. Windmill is one of the stronger melee skills (except for elves), and is objectively the best at rank 1. Humans and giants are recommended for melee.

Instead of grinding out Windmill, it is recommended to grind out Refining to rank 1. At rank 1, Refining gives you tons of Dex, but requires you to fail refining ore to train the higher ranks at a decent pace, and Dex makes you succeed. It's possible to get to rank 1 on nothing but successful refining, but committing sudoku is a more pleasurable experience. Elves are recommended for archery, since they fire two arrows/bolts per normal ranged attack, and have two archery skills unique to them: Mirage Missle, an AoE DoT, and Final Shot, which lets you shoot more rapidly and teleport around during the skill's duration. Humans also have a unique skill to them called Arrow Revolver, which lets them load up 5 arrows/bolts at once. They also aim faster at rank 1 Ranged Attack than elves do.
>I want to play magic
It is recommended you start off with melee, at least in part. Mana only regenerates in the evening, when Eweca fills the air, or if you have a skill called Meditate, which slows down your movement to a walk. For that reason, most people just stock up on mana potions, which will eat through your gold, which you won't have much of on a new character. For that reason, you should be able to handle yourself in a fight if you run out of mana, so make sure you can melee your way through. Elves have more mana and int than other races, but are more frail and have weaker melee ability if enemies get too close to cast magic.

Play however you like. Mabinogi is the kind of MMO that excels at letting you do what you want, even if it means the game kicks in your face. Peaca dungeon is a good example of this.

Fomor Scrolls. Mimics drop their scrolls at higher rates than other mobs drop their fomor scrolls, and the quest for mimic scrolls rewards 12000g in this server. Mimics can be found in dungeons of all kinds, but for beginners, Ciar dungeon is easier to get through than most of the other dungeons, and Randal can give you a Ciar Beginner Pass if Ciar Normal is still too tough for your CP. Fomor scroll quests are sold by Duncan in Tir Chonaill If you grow weary of dungeoneering, you can ask NPCs around town for a part-time job. There should be nearby signs saying when they start allowing PTJs. This server bumped their rewards up to 4x, so these jobs are actually worth doing. These are timed on the in-game clock, and need to be done withing a certain time window. Be sure to do jobs for the church for holy water. Another popular method is to form a party to kill black wolves with the Party Quest sold by Deian in Tir Chonaill's grasslands.

There's no way of getting more characters besisdes the extra Giant/Elf cards. Server rules allow people to have up to 3 accounts for the purposes of having alt-chatacters. I don't know what the penalty is for having more, but do so at your own risk.

Yes, when you use a flyer to warp to a seller's house, the flyer will be replaced with a coupon that'll take you back to the location where you used the flyer. This makes them great for going to hard-to-reach places whenever you want. Unfortunately the return coupon only works in the housing channel, where the flyers take you, so here's how you do it. Step 1: Get a flyer from any housing board in town. Step 2: Have someone bring you to the desired place, or go there yourself. Step 3: Use the flyer to go to the housing channel. The return coupon you get brings you back to the same spot you used the flyer, so be sure to use it in a safe location. Step 4: Leave the housing channel on foot/mount; using the coupon defeats the point of keeping the coupon. You now have your free ticket to where you want. Step 5: To go back to your desired place, you now need two flyers. Use the first one to reach the housing channel. Hold onto the return coupon. Step 6: When you've finished your business, repeat step 3, then use the coupon from step 5 to go back to where you started.

Previously this game had a retard filter, where you would actually have to actually think about how to use your skills correctly in combat. The combat system was designed where if you get hit, it is either due to human error or latency.
the nexon version is shit because the entire combat system was re-coded to remove the retard filter, allowing the player to spam F1 to win, but as you progress, you'll soon start to notice that you're going to need special buffs to progress, and those special buffs would require paying actual cash to the game, which is gay.
also everytime they add something new, the game gets less optimized. It's a godsend to be able to go to dunby at 60FPS here.

Never played on live, but this is an older version of the game before they remade the combat to be faster and before a lot of the really easymode classes came out. You also get a free horse, a bunch of free skills, and free skill resets up to cumulative level 100 which means you can turn those free skills into skill points if you like. Also the rates for nearly everything are 2x so it's faster to grind.

That being said, the world isn't all THAT huge, and even in this seven-year behind server there's still some skills that stand head-and-shoulders above others, specifically whirlwind and most of the alchemy category. That aside, there's nothing stopping you from going full life skills, with the possible exception of combat skills gets you faster levels than the life grind, and you need those levels for ability points to improve your skills.

Just about every outfit and weapon can be dyed in several parts. Some outfits are specific to whatever race but their stats are all basically the same. There's a handful of face and hair types for you character and a bunch of colours. There's also thiccening mechanic based on what foods you eat and an ageing mechanic which just makes you taller. Other than that everyone bar giants can learn just about any skill.

I did it. Made Valencia gauntlets and a pair of War Swords. Early game through shadow missions it's worth it for the extra 11k or so you can get out of a whole mission, but later on it becomes too much of a hassle. It depends on how much money you're trying to make. Back when I had just started in mari picking those up got me just off well enough to buy a damn fine sword before this server existed and it might do the same for you as well so I say go for it unless you have like 500k in the bank.

I finally got off my ass and made a PNG that works as a VC without mmluna. Apart from the 4 color and 256x96 pixel restrictions, Mabi requires two compressed text chunks (zTXt) after the header. One is an author ID, which apparently not even Drahan knows the encoding of; I just copied this from an existing VC (which is exactly what mmluna does). The other is the author name which is displayed on top of the image. It appears the author name is encoded within the author ID as well, as changing the name chunk causes the image to stop appearing in your import list.
In addition, the filename must follow the format chat_yearmonthday_hourminutesecond_username.png. The date can be nonsense; I entered in 1942 for the year and it worked. I would say that the name in the filename must match the encoded name, but I have clearly seen VC files I have saved from other players that have the wrong name in the filename yet properly display in game as being made by their original creators. Perhaps it is the author ID which must match the filename.
Pic related is before and after mmluna gets a (properly cropped and color reduced) PNG. You can easily replicate these changes yourself with a tool like TweakPNG. You can see it also stripped out an unnecessary pHYs chunk, but I confirmed Mabi doesn't care and skips over unknown ancillary chunks as it should.

Guide for nekojima:
To reach the island you need to talk to the kid at Port Cean. Fiddle with the japanese options and talking options and you'll get a keyword or cutscene of a shipwreck. Don't buy the ship pass, it's not that. If you've been there before, just use the long Korean keyword. The island is fairly small with only four named NPCs and the rest being cats, soldiers, villagers and some rats at the isolated edge of the map. It's a nice place for screenshots.
When you arrive, talk to the chief a bit and he'll give you a keyword and a quest to get three certificates. To get them, use the short Korean keyword on the other three named NPCs north of the chief. You'll get a quest from each of them. Basically: fish tuna, kill rats, and make juice.
The juice one is notable since the Japanese/Korean makes it confusing. To make it; you need the Handicraft skill (F rank is fine), 5 silvervine fruit that you can harvest north of the NPCs, and water that you can bottle from the well. After you get all three certificates, head back to the chief and he'll give you a stone which lets you enter the dungeon and tell you to talk with the cat god at the end of it. The dungeon is at the top of the hill. If you want another pass for the dungeon, just talk to the chief again and use the certificate keyword, the short Korean phrase.
Things to note about the dungeon:
>There is no minimap, so use Z to orient yourself North
>There are only cat monsters. They can injure pretty badly.
>Every room only has a switch in the middle, except one with a cat statue that sends you to the next floor. No herbs or keys or anything.
>Hitting the switch, like opening a chest, spawns monsters and closes all the doors in the room. But it also closes all the doors not connected to that room.
<So say you're in Room A and have access to B, C, D and E. The you move to B and clear that room. You can now only access room A, F, G, and H. So make sure everyone is together or you'll be separated.

After finishing the quest, you'll be sent a villager and given a quest similar to the one you did originally for them. You'll have to complete their task, run the dungeon again, then do the repeat the same thing with the other two villagers. You'll have had run the dungeon 4 times in total.

>Kill a bunch of rats again, dungeon run
>Fish 2 tuna, 5 snappers, dungeon run again
You receive experience for each quest. Doing the whole quest line rewards you with a cat suit and a Korean title meaning "Honorary Nekojima villager".

Here's a chart of how the rates change based on blessed items. you can get 97% from Granat in the elven HQ in Taill. This table is from the latest entry on the wiki. This page doesn't exist for the 2011 wiki, and the earliest (2015) says a blessed item at 99% becomes 100% repair rate. It might be worth testing some blessed wooden blades at edern to see if they never lose a point.
