Aaaaand that's a wrap. Too bad that it's troubled development history, mostly with 505 games, resulted in it's demise.
>Our team has a clear vision for this game – one that we shared with all of you with much shared excitement – and, in spite of all of our efforts, the current state of the game remains equal parts far from that vision and beyond behind schedule from our initial planning when we shared Otherworld with all of you three years ago. Progress has absolutely been made during that time – but unfortunately, a very thorough status review of the game versus its intended design showed both the Re-Logic and 505/Pipeworks teams that things were quite a bit further away from the finish line than we had imagined.
>… It becomes clear that this leaves things in a very undesirable state. As a result, we have made the decision to terminate development of Terraria: Otherworld.
>We sincerely thank both of our external development teams for their hard work on the game, but at some point, we have to be honest with ourselves and realize that Otherworld simply is never going to reach its potential in any sort of reasonable time or fashion.

I think the main reason they wanted to have a new game was to use a better programming language, and because Terraria's codebase and engine is harder to add new features to because they were much less experienced when they started work on it. Sometimes, it's easier to start from scratch than it is to try expanding a foundation that's already got something built on top of it.

It's got over 20 million copies sold for a reason, and that's because it's content exceeds it's price, even in a single playthrough.
There's also a modding community, with average modding community drama that comes along with it. Regardless, there's still mods that add even MORE content, like Thorium, Spirit, and (even if it's lesser quality of the three) Calamity mods. I gotta disagree since the basic combat comes in only a couple flavors.
You either run in straight line back and forth, circle around a boss, or bounce around an arena for events.
Weaponry is all pretty similar too. Melee is ok, but after a while all the swords are essentially just bows/guns thanks to the projectiles, spears and flails/yoyos fixing it a bit. Ranged is just playing with different arcs most of the time till you get guns at which point its just firing a straight line where the ammo has slight variation. Magic is just ranged, like some have different arcs but its still basically identical of aim at enemy, run in arena/grapple in a circle and shoot.
I seriously got bored of Terraria because of this, I never really felt like I progressed aside from whenever a slime or something interrupted by building it died faster.

Gee, I'd love to go to 55:00. If only you weren't using such a fucking garbage player, I'd actually have a functioning seekbar that lets me find 55:00 sometime today.

Disgusting. It's clear that Terraria was just a complete fluke, dumb luck on their part. Im pissed I gave them money, luckily it was only $2 or so.

Terraria was made by ReLogic which is based in Indiana. Otherworld was being outsourced to Engine Software out of the Netherlands. Engine also handled the console and mobile ports of Terraria.
Last year ReLogic fired Engine because of what they did with Otherworld and brought in Pipeworks to handle the non PC versions of Terraria and to try to fix Otherworld.
Because of how badly this whole thing turned out ReLogic has stated that they plan on doing all of their development in the future in house.

I mean yeah it shows how bad they are at managing another team, but not at development.

I think Engine may have had them by the balls to some extent. The console and mobile ports weren't simple affairs and Engine had to basically do it from scratch. I'm guessing Red and the rest of ReLogic couldn't afford to piss off Engine taking away the project from them until they had a back up developer to maintain and fix the console and mobile ports.
Engine fucked those ports up as well too.

It was terribly buggy, game breaking in some instances.
>has much better controller support
That was one thing they did right. Of course that was out of necessity since console players generally don't have access to a keyboard.
Mobile was just a complete disaster all the way around but you probably can't blame Engine entirely for that given the constraints of the platform.
