So you haven't played them? They're a world apart from system shock. Slow, deliberately paced game play which plays with player psychology far better than any other survival horror game. The feeling of being trapped in a new environment you haven't got your grasp on yet and knowing something dangerous is trapped in there with you is a unique horror to the game. Far from arcadey or tryhard (what does this mean?)

There's still a lot of interest from these people in doing survival horror games, Masahiro Ito is also very active and easy to engage with - I've even spoken to him and introduced him to Garage Bad Dream Adventure. I think the biggest problem is there is all these skilled people with an interest and history in the genre but nobody to foot the bill and get the project underway.
