If you've played Condemned 1 you would agree the best thing about it was the atmosphere. The grounded dilapidated environments which were unnerving because of how grounded and "real" they were.

In Condemned 2 there is a level where you have run away from a bear and another one where you fight enemies wearing full plate mail with longswords. Its not a bad game but the best part about the first game is missing.

condemned 2 was just way too surreal. remember how the best part of condemned 1 was the entire first 80% of the game until you learned you had some magical power or some shit, then fought a goddamn demon? with condemned 2 they completely missed the point and made the entire fucking thing about spooky darkness monsters, a supervillain hideout straight out of superman, and you literally gain the magical ability to fus roh dah your enemies to death. there are still cool parts; one memory i clearly have is hucking a cue ball at a homeless guy so hard he did a backflip, the crime scene investigation was way more in-depth and some of the melee executions looked and felt good but it just went way off the deep end

they consistently dropped the ball on cool ideas that they just pushed in the wrong direction. you start off as an alcoholic and literally shake when aiming guns, and when you slam down the bottles of jagermeister you find you lose the shakes for a bit and deal increased melee damage. cool, right? wrong, you hallucinate a boss battle with your addiction then suddenly are completely clean. things like that are where they missed the point and gave us a shit game that could have been really good

I hated the last bit of Condemned 1, when it took you to the countryside and had to fight big mutant guys. Thanks for the insight on the sequel, I still feel like it could be a fun cheesy romp, I have experience with crappy games.

Remember when Ethan Thomas was a chubby by the book motherfucker in Condemned 1 and then just turned into like a totally different character in 2?

It isn't bad taken kind of as stand alone, though a lot of fans of 1 aren't too fond. Combat is pretty vicious and satisfying, there's some fun to be had and it's probably cheap now so there's not a whole lot of loss.

It was miles better from 1. Why it never got a PC port was something I never understood. Like the other anon said, it desperately deserves a PC remaster.

The people bitching about Ethan shouting (dont want to spoil too much here) at hobos in armor and the bear chase scene need to stfu. The bear chase inside the cabin nearly made me shit myself back in the day. The alcoholic relapses and hallucinations where Ethan fights his inner demons were awesome. The game hits horror atmosphere perfectly without the need for shitty jump scares. Multiplayer back in the day used to be really fun too (two cops with good gear vs grunts with only shitty stuff, the creepy living baby doll survival game mode, etc). Did I mention the doll factory level was genuinely disturbing?

its perfectly fine as i remember it, the last level or two is just really weak once it goes off the deep end. The early levels are still great as i remember them and bashing a scary hobo about the face and neck with a piece of rebar was pretty satisfying

Condemned 2 really loses itself at the halfway point, it might as well be a different game. Mechanically Condemned 2 is superior to Condemned 1 but both games showcase the best and worse of heavily scripted sequences, since a replay of the first Condemned doesn't bring in as much suspense as the first time you play.

Thinking about it I would say despite the weird final quarter of the game it's still definitely worth a play. Especially if you get it for cheap. Even though they both had bad finales I'd go as far to say they're the only horror games that kinda unnerved me at times, partially because i find urban environments and horrible fucking hobos a lot creepier than monsters

The game was good but i kinda wish that they didn't explain the cause of the hobos going apeshit in the first game. they could've just focused on the serial killer's motivations exclusively.

Gameplay was an improvement alright, but combos felt too gimmicky and jarred against the "desperate bumfight" tone.

I agree that powers and to some extent the doll factory really went off the deep end but I'd still file condemned 2 under "worth a playthrough". Shame it's didn't get a PC port because digging up a 7th gen console is more of a hassle than it's worth these days. Assuming you don't have one plugged in already

The second game starts off with a fight tutorial against the hobos, after that it's always action packed fights against groups of them…there is just no fucking place for horror in this game. It's good on it's own (especially the brawl?-mode) but a huge bummer after the epic first game with it's fantastic suspense and horror theme.

One thing i really liked about Condemned 2 is the intense motion blur that they implemented in the game. it felt like you were watching a cg film rather than playing a game.
