It doesn't really matter if new FPS games are garbage or not. The format for arena FPS was already perfected with quake. Xonotic is generally more fun since mobility is made significantly more accessible, but it's essentially the same thing.
What can you add to these games? There's no point in changing them. There is no reason to ever make a new competitive FPS once you have a good one. It would be like trying to make a new version of foot ball or baseball.
But unfortunately shit like xonotic is completely dead because people don't play good games, they just play well marketed games, which also drives the competitive scene into being forced to play terrible games. I have a friend who plays competitive overwatch for money and he agreed that it was an absolutely terrible competitive game and he wished he could play something else instead.

Not that anon, but I'm a Xonotic fan so I can tell you.
1. The Blaster. There are several advanced movement techniques in Xonotic, but you never NEED to use any of them, because everyone spawns with The Blaster, a basic weapon with low fire rate, damage, and blast radius, but a very high amount of knockback and infinite ammo. Not only does this allow you to knock people off cliffs and bounce them into the air for air combos, but you can also rocket jump with it for a minimal health cost. This makes things very fast, makes it very easy for even newbies to navigate around maps and gain a height advantage, and can also be used for advanced techniques such as boosting to gain a lot of speed rather than height, since speed is conserved when bunny hopping. This, combined with better air control than Quake, makes Xonotic tons of fun to move around in, and generally more acrobatic.
2. Ramp jumping. Landing on a downward ramp gets you tons of forward speed. Landing on an upward ramp or timing your jump correctly when moving into an upward ramp can convert your forward speed into height. This can be used to access high areas without a blaster jump, allowing you to make less noise, keep a more powerful weapon at the ready, and conserve health. It's also a ton of fun in the rare instances where ramps are set up in a half pipe configuration, where you can jump down from a high level, land on the ramp on one side, bounce to the ramp on the other side, and zoom out with tons of speed and height. Fuse is the absolute best for this, because the Vortex (Railgun) spawn is in one of these halfpipes.
3. The map design is built to accommodate both blaster and ramp jumping as well as the altered arsenal, which generally means they're more open and free-flowing, more fun to move through in my opinion.
4. Some of the weapons other than the blaster can be used for interesting movement tech. The Crylink isn't very useful for gaining tons of speed, but can take you from 0 to reasonably fast in a single shot very quickly, and also has the benefit of having reverse knockback, so you can boost while facing in the direction you want to go instead of away from it. The Devastator is generally bad for movement since it does tons of self-damage, but can be detonated mid-air for a little extra boost when you don't have a surface to blaster off of. And there's also a grappling hook, although very few servers actually enable the fucking thing other than fucking instagib servers where using it is a death sentence.
I think that's everything it improves over Quake 3. Oh, and strafe-jumping from Quake 3 is in Xonoitc as well so rest assured that you can go fast even without all of that extra stuff.

I've been playing warsow recently which is also a free, opensource quake clone and wanted to compare. Warsow has a basic weapon which does minimal self damage and I think is also called the blaster. Though it also has a really funny auto attack for melee meaning if you bump into someone with it out they'll auto do damage to you. Them best thing about warsow though is that it has a dash on RMB which jumps you up to speed and is directional so you can jump off walls and ledges to get around, it also maintains momentum so you can switch direction but keep your speed which is super powerful if you can strafejump. The other neat thing about the dash is it can act like an unreal tournament dodge in that you can strafe dash to get a jump sideways to hop out of the way which is something I'd consider an evolution of AFPS; the combining of those two movement schemes, the short hops that are useful in-fight from UT and the cross map speed of SJ from quake.
All the maps are designed around this with a lot of ways to get from point A to B; I find that it can actually be pretty hard to hunt down an opponent or pretty easy to run away since you can both move so fast and so fluidly around the very interconnected maps. I don't think that Warsow has downramp speed though I've not tried it I'm only so-so having been more of a UT guy than a quake guy, I mean I can barely even SJ which is why i appreciate the hold space to bhop and dash in warsow. It makes it very accessable

I don't begrudge players for wanting to take the game seriously, but the game clearly was not meant to be played that way. If you want proof, join a game and convince everyone to play demoman on defence: you won't be able to lose because every single polygon on the map will be occupied by an explosion at all times. Even stacking heavies on offence will steamroll just about any team, and yet you have this entire community of players who are "open to new ideas" despite having played with the same team lineups for the last five or six years.
You know what the dumbest thing is? I watched a few discussion videos from TF2 pros when the topic of competitive TF2 was popular shortly after Valve introduced the matchmaking update, and one thing I heard from them was "we could play game modes other than 5_cp, but fuck that." They never went into detail, either, which was baffling: you had a bunch of game modes and maps (like Payload or KOTH or small attack/defend maps) which they flat-out refused to play.
I understand not wanting to play Badwater Basin with 12 people, but there's no reason a smaller map like Goldrush should be excluded. The community, if it can be called that, lives up to every stereotype if they can't bring themselves to push a cart instead of standing on a point.

This only works if your'e talking about getting matched with better or more experienced opponents. Fighting games with online play generally give you the option to play with people better than you. In a team-based game matchmaking should exclusively be based on nearness or internet connection quality, since looking for equally skilled or better teammates is not a want players have for the sake of challenge, but to increase their chances of winning. It's a matter of growing plants versus catching groups of fish. Other genres, especially 1v1 multiplayer genres naturally lead players towards the plant growing attitude, where they have little choice but to either gitgud or have their friends gitgud with them. Skill-based matchmaking however, especially in the competitive/Esports scenes causes players to want to catch only the biggest fish, players who are the most skilled that they can find, and just glue them together into a team, expecting any improvements in skill, teamwork, etc. to be a bonus rather than the goal. This however means that once a bigger fish is later found, the smallest of the big fish is tossed back into the lake.
