The game became very cheap and so I bought it and thought it was alright. I did the same for the second one too. If they made the loot and drops and little more flushed out and varied it would have been a lot more interesting to me, as the main characters were unappealing. The story and locations were memorable I found. The company that makes these games seems to make things above their pay grade.

i liked dead island. i paid full price at launch and was not disappointed. it's exactly what i expected it to be. maybe people who are mad at it were too retarded to look at gameplay footage before they bought it. lots was released pre-launch date, so there's no excuse.
another complaint they might have is there's really no reason to play co-op. co-op is shit, but it's there.fortunately this did not affect me because i don't have friends.
would i play it again? no, for the simple fact that it's since been revealed that loot is timed rather than RNG. you can only get orange rarity weapons after 10 hours of play rather than having them randomly drop.
well, so says the rumor anyway. i didn't bother checking on that. but based on how many orange weapons i had, i think that sounds accurate. so fuck it.

Overall I think the key problem is that it advertised the wrong thing. It's be like the Witcher 3 trailers only showing sailing gameplay or if Doom showed off what looked to be open world exploration. Dead Island wasn't a story based narrative drama w/ Zombies, so it shouldn't have been advertised as so.
The fans they attracted with the trailer were disappointed and the target audience never got interested by media they put out.

I wanted to play the original game, just like with borderlands.
When the tech demos surfaced of dead island, it was a penumbra style exploration puzzler game with some combat, where you and your wife went on a flight but your plane crashed in a zombie infested island, where you needed to find your wife. Sadly the game website went silent for a few yeqrs and it ended up turning it into what it is today.
Just like borderlands that was first a grimdark wild goosechase adventure shooter with shitton of guns on a hopeless crazed prison desert planet where therr was rumors of a secret vault that every lowlife and treasurr hunter tried to go after only to be broken by the planet.

People shit on it because that's the meme but I actually liked it. Lots of design flaws, yes, but it was exactly what I was looking to play at the time.
It's beginning and end are sloggy, but everything in the middle is satisfyingly good. The Moresby map is fantastic, finally a city map that actually works for a zombie game while being visually interesting too.
